Tolfdir is a Nord mage who serves as a Master Wizard of the College of Winterhold in the Fourth Era. Despite seeming foolish or forgetful at times, the professor is actually one of the best Alteration scholars in all of Tamriel.[1]
In 4E 201, Tolfdir was in the middle of giving a lesson to students of the college when a new student, the Last Dragonborn arrived.[2] After the Dragonborn and Tolfdir discovered the Eye of Magnus within Saarthal and brought it back to the college, Tolfdir was explaining to the Dragonborn how the markings on the Eye seemed to be unique, as they did not appear to be Elven, Daedric, or Ayleid until he was interrupted by Ancano, the college's Thalmor advisor. Ancano had an urgent message for the Dragonborn, explaining that a member of the Psijic Order arrived to see them.[3]
After a confrontation between Ancano and Arch-Mage Savos Aren caused an explosion, thanks to Ancano abusing the power of the Eye, Tolfdir informed the Dragonborn that Savos was dead and tasked them with saving Winterhold from Magical Anomalies.[4] After the Dragonborn retrieved Staff of Magnus from Labyrinthian and returned to the college, Tolfdir informed the Dragonborn that Mirabelle Ervine had been killed by Ancano. Tolfdir and the Dragonborn confronted Ancano and the Dragonborn defeated him, saving the college. Tolfdir became the new Master Wizard succeeding Mirabelle and he appointed the Dragonborn as the new Arch-Mage.[5][4][6][7][8]
