Quest Issues
Upon reaching the tower I was immediately attacked and was not able to sneak anywhere. I was able to steal the arrow and Aren's Tower key after misleading the many enemies and using a Chameleon potion. If you are seen you will get kicked out of the Mages Guild. Next, I killed off all the enemies except Aren and used the key to go outside. I snuck back in and Aren was in his study. I had killed him and reloaded, so I knew about his 'strange' key (see below) and wanted to see if it opened anything special.
On Aren's person is a key called Aren's Strange Key. Does anyone know what this is for? There is a door that will only open with a key in the Grotto area, but it still doesn't work once you have both of Aren's keys. - Greywolf
This is so far the most annoying quest I've found in Oblivion... after waiting a week in game time Fathis NEVER leaves. I've killed off his minions several times, they keep respawning, but Fathis is always there mixing potions right in front of his chest. I'm going to try the "lead him to falling to his death" idea and if that doesn't work I'm giving up until I can get a powerful enough Telekinesis spell to access the chest without him attacking me. I don't want him chasing me all the way back to his room in the castle, I'd never be able to get back into the tunnels to grab the loot I had to drop or for re-spawns of Daedra for loot/cash, etc. Jondrasar 14:12, 26 April 2006 (EDT)
- (Response to "On Aren's person is a key called Aren's Strange Key...")
- This is the key to the door to his tower. If you nick it, you can skip the entire dungeon altogether. I did this went I bumped into him leave bravil castle (he had a weapon drawn, a dagger I believe, and was waring armor and leather pants. I think he may have been effected by an AI bug). — Unsigned comment by 213.84.20.82 (talk)
-
- Another good place to snag his key is when he enters the Mage's Guild in Bravil, sometime in the morning. As long as he doesn't catch you, neither will anyone else. Plus he's not trying to stab you in the face for B&E. Has to be done before the quest starts, because he won't leave his tower until after it's over. - Triaxx2
- I used 100% chameleon for that part, and just took the items from the chest in front of his eyes. You can do that with potions assuming your Alchemy skill is high enough and your apparatus (apparati?) good enough to make potions with 25% or higher Chameleon effect, as I'm told the effects of multiple potions stacks. You can also enchant multiple items with Chameleon to get the effect up if you want. Quillan 14:36, 26 April 2006 (EDT)
-
- Ahh, good idea, I'll try that, thanks... he wouldn't leap to his death no matter where I lead him, lol. I can sneak up right beside him but as soon as I go for the chest he sees me. Jondrasar 14:39, 26 April 2006 (EDT)
- I did this quest after completing the Mage's Guild questline, and was able to walk right up to him and take the arrow without any reaction from him. I did have to fight all his minions, but he was not aggressive towards me at all. I was not punished by the Mage's Guild for this either. — Unsigned comment by Bludlust (talk • contribs)
- There is a scroll within the dungeons "touch of rage" which works on fathis, and while killing him will probably still get you kicked out of the mages guild, if you enrage him, and wait till he pulls his axe on you before running away, he will usually fall off of the edge without dying if you get onto the ledges right outside the room he's in. After that, while he's running or walking back to his room, you can grab the arrowhead and other loot before he comes back. --Aaronbegin 01:22, 12 May 2006 (EDT)
Hello, for some reason Amusei won't approach me, I didn't speak to any beggar at any point during the previous quest. Any other known issues with this?
Gray Fox Doesn't Show Up
No matter what I do or how long I wait, Gray Fox won't appear in the home of Malintus Ancrus in Chorrol. Non-patched version of Oblivion. The only thing that has changed when compared to Turning a Blind Eye is that I became a Vampire (for the first time) during the rest needed for Amusei to approach me. I'm clueless, I don't know where to start, except for ridding myself of Vampirism which I would actually like to preserve O:) --Irfy 22:11, 16 August 2006 (EDT)
- Patched version = no change. I completed the main quest, became Arch-Mage, started Dark Brotherhood quests, completed Fighters Guild quests, and and and - came back occasionally, and still the same. Resolved with
SetStage TG09Arrow 25
Using stage 20 would bypass the meeting with Gray Fox, but wouldn't allow the beggars to reveal me further directions. 25 progressed me past the beggars stage.--Irfy 18:02, 10 September 2006 (EDT)- I haven't necessarily completed all of the mage's guild stuff. But I was also able to just take anything i liked out of the chest with the arrow head in it--JDHannan 02:06, 17 October 2006 (EDT)
ok I like using the movetoqt cheat on my pc and when I did it to Turning a Blind Eye The Gray fox didnt show! I've tryed everything even curing my vampirsn and that still didnt WORK!!!! Any help?
How not to get kicked from the mages guild
Remember, it isn't a crime if you aren't seen.
I came to this quest before completing all of my reccomandetion quests for the mages guild and were promptly expelled when I killed Arathis or when I stole the arrow. As I didn't have any invisibility or chamelon effects I started to think I had to reload. (I did this quest as a lvl 5 stealth char)
However, I discovered a solution to my problem. If I alerted Arathis to my presence by attacking a guard creature and then drawing him away from his study without attacking him, I could run back and take the doorkey and the arrow from his chest. If Arathis was far enough away, so that he couldn't see me open the chest, I avoided expulcion from the mages guild. I then ran out the front door, jumping down to the ground and managed to avoid beeing followed outside.
This was done on a patched version. — Unsigned comment by 80.202.88.222 (talk)
You can also kill him by making him fall from the top of the tower multiple times (Sdharly 23:38, 1 March 2010 (UTC))

Anoooother Complication... I can't find the key to the door in the Beavil Wizard's grotto, it wasnt on either of the conjurers or the dremora. ---m'aiq the liar 09:59, 27 January 2007 (EST)

- There is not key that I found. But you know that big huge crevase with water is? - Guys if u dont wana get kicked out of the Mages Guild Attack him until his heath is almost gone then go to the top of the tower an block his attacks also walk foward to push him off the sides an he will die with no penalty to you
Page Updates
Hello,
After doing this mission a few times recently I've updated the Arrow of Extrication page to include the approximate underwater location of the entrance to Fathis Aren's tower. I described it's location along the North wall, and above the hole leading to the giant slaughterfish. While I don't have any pictures, I hope I can continue to shape up this particular page, as it apparently doesn't meet UESP's higher standards of quality. -edecoder
- Hello!
- I cant get into that freakin door! it says thats its locked, and you told me to go on a underwater passage? :S I cant find it... is it as deep as you can near the door to the sea or longer up? Please I need your help, I wanna do Thiefs Guild quests!!! — Unsigned comment by 81.232.18.216 (talk)
Help.Please!
Dam, im on the xbox 360 platform-(Regarding Aroww Of Extrication Quest) and when I enter the door to take me to the north wing..it goes into loading and then its all looking good, then right at the end of loading, the screen goes dim and freezes up. I tries restarting my xbox but no hope. I even went back to the shop and changed the disk..still no hope i think its a common glitch but have never heard of anyone else with he same problem. Has this ever occurred to you or is there a way of fixing it? help, please because this is holding up my thieves guild questline. And also while im at it..I cant find the Grey Fox in Malintus Acrus' house, UESP suggests i try ion Helvius Cecia's house but he's still not there!...where is he? Please anyone with answers please help...Much appreciated. — Unsigned comment by OblivNerd (talk • contribs)

- Funny thing, the same thing is happening to me (sort of). Should mention, I'm using a 360 as well. Here's what happens: At the tower, I had castEase of Burden (feather 50), and saved. If i let the spell run out in the tower, I'm fine, till i try to fast-travel out of there, and it freezes. If I don't let it run out, I can fast travel once, but, the seccond time I try to do so, or I try to use the quick-wait, or I try to sit here till the spell runs out, it freezes. Very curious. Well, I don't have a solution, but, I'm going to go try some things. Feel free to AIM me at "bluekatstogie" if you want to talk about this, maybe share some insight. Fathis Aren Bloodprice
I've edited where it says you must pay a Bloodprice for Fathis Aren's death. You will only have to pay a bloodprice if he dies in the castle. However, kill him in his tower and you do not have to pay a bloodprice. The Gray Fox also states this in your quest instructions. — Unsigned comment by 70.17.35.131 (talk)
Alternative
Here's a further way of doing it if you are in the Mages Guild: I'm Arch-Mage, I happened to sneak into the tower with my companion Leonidas, Fathis attacked him instead of confronting me and Leonidas killed him!…whislt I went to get the key and the arrowhead. Of course I did not steal anything else. I only killed a few evil creatures and such and got away without penalty from the Mage-Guild.— Unsigned comment by HunkyDork (talk • contribs)
Heres a fun way to do it...just get Fathis to attack you then have him follow you up to the top level of his tower...then block push (hold block and walk into him) him off...it doesnt count as murder or anything...and you can take everything from the chest where you found the arrowhead

Can't receive the quest
Amusei won't give me the quest. I went to the imperial city, andhe's continuing his normal routine, and has nothing special in is dialogue. In fact, I just checked, and the Grey Fox is still in Helvius Cecia's basement! Is it possibly because, in my journal, the log of the Turning a blind eye go's like this:
(first journal entry) (entering the catacombs) (taking the stone) (finding the temple) (the gray fox has rewarded me.)
Did the fact that I somehow took the stone before the game recognized i had found the temple screw something up? and if so, is there anyway to fix this on the XBOX 360 version? Dan 9410 13:36, 21 October 2008 (EDT)

Fathis Aren's tower

- I've been through the secret passage, surfaced in the lake, and walked to the tower, and it still says the door is locked. I'll try reload a previous save. Possible glitch? - Jujimufu 03:48, 8 April 2009 (EDT)
- I think it's something to do with the journal not updating. I seem to be stuck on Stage 27 of the quest journal, "I've searched both chests in Fathis Aren's room. Neither had the Arrow of Extrication. I'm beginning to think it isn't here. This room doesn't seem to have enough wizardly stuff for a wizard of Fathis stature. I wonder if there is a secret chamber where he keeps his more valuable treasures?" How would I update it? - Jujimufu 04:45, 8 April 2009 (EDT)
- As the article says, "You will then get a journal entry telling you to look for a secret passageway. One of the two pillars on the alcove straight across from the entrance is the lever that opens up the secret passage to Bravil Wizard's Grotto." –Rpeh•T•C•E• 04:59, 8 April 2009 (EDT)
- I never got that entry. It never updated. Would I have to wait until it updates before I open the passageway? Also, is there a key that can be used to open the tower? I've stolen the Aren's Strange Key, but that doesn't seem to open it. - Jujimufu 05:13, 8 April 2009 (EDT)

- OK.. lets take it from the top. I saved the game right after Amusei gave me the quest (Stage 10). From there, I fast-travelled to Chorrol and spoke with the Gray Fox (Stage 20). From there, I went outside and fast-travelled to Bravil, found one of the marked beggars and spoke with them (Stage 25). I then entered the Bravil Castle, and broke into Aren's room (Stage 26). When I entered the room, I went to the chests, unlocked them, searched them, and the quest updated (Stage 27). From there, I opened the secret door using the stone pillar, and then entered the Grotto. Once inside the Grotto, I went to the place where there are two Conjurers and a locked door. Killed the Conjurers, searched every possible bag, sack, chest, whatever. Went to the water-filled crevice, killed the Slaughterfish, killed the Giant Slaughterfish, looted the corpse, continued on until I reached the trap door which transported me to the lake. From the lake, I swam to the edge, walked to Fathis Aren's Tower, tried to get in, but couldn't because it said the door needed a key. Now, is the door supposed to be unlocked for me? I stopped receiving journal entries after I closed the chests in Aren's room in the Castle (the entry next to Stage 27). What I am confused about is when I'm supposed to receive the update for Stage 28.

- Wait, not all of us are there. I did the same thing ( killed pretty much everything in the dungeon), found the passage near the Giant Slaughterfish (not the passage at the very bottom of the water, the correct one on the side), and, after surfacing, I found my way to the fort. However, after emerging in the Fort, the door to "Fathis Aren's Tower was still locked, and it told me I needed a key. I don't have the slightest idea where to find a key, so fire away. Did I miss a quest step or something?
- This happened to me, too, until I realized that I didn't need to go into the interior of the Fort itself. Rather, I followed the stairs on the outside of the fort's entrance, up three or four levels, encountering various monsters along the way. As I went up, I noticed what seem to be open arched windows, each of which contained lootable objects (although some of the loot was marked as stealing). Once I reached a level three or four stories up (sorry, can't remember exactly which one), I saw a man standing in one of the arched windows, with his back turned to me. I first thought he was a daedra because he was wearing daedric armor, so I it took me a while to realize it was Fathis. This might not always be the case, since my character was at a fairly high level, and I think Fathis' equipment levels up along with your character. Once I saw him, I made my way over to where he was standing, stole the arrow of extraction, and eventually killed him. Note that it doesn't always play out this way; as other posters have mentioned, sometimes Fathis runs down the stairs and attacks you as soon as you come out of the Wizzard's Grotto/Lair.

Fathis Aren accuses me of stealing, no matter what I do
I went through the entire quest and came to the Tower. As soon as I walked into the open, Fathis ran down from the third floor and yelled "How dare you steal from me!" and proceeded to try to kill me. I had taken some stuff on my way through the caverns, but I wasn't carrying anything flagged as stolen. The first time around, I killed him since he attacked me first -- but I got kicked out of the guild so I restarted. The second time I snuck up to the third floor using an invisibility spell, and tried to talk to him. He yelled again and attacked, and this time I attempted to yield to no avail. I finally realized the only way to get the arrow was to sneak past him and loot his chest using an invisibility spell. I can't figure out why he thought I stole something, unless I picked something up way earlier in the game and had since discarded it. Oh well, I finished the quest so I guess it doesn't matter, it's just puzzling. BlueCat 01:05, 16 May 2009 (EDT)
Arrow of Extrication
How do I get the arrow of extrication back after I used it for the keyhole in the Hall of Epochs? — Unsigned comment by 76.177.15.86 (talk) on 5 June 2009
- I am not 100% sure, but I believe is it destroyed once it hits the hole. If it isn't, then I would think you could grab it if you can reach the statue. --Mr. Oblivion(T-C) 14:52, 5 June 2009 (EDT)
The arrow is not destroyed but I would advise not picking it back up. The only way (without the console) to remove the arrow from your inventory is to fire it from the pressure plate. It will always be marked as a quest item.Itaav 22:24, 5 June 2009 (EDT)
Can't find beggars
I've spent hours looking and can't find the beggars in bravil after talking to gray fox. I've looked where they're normally, where they sleep, and I've looked in every room of every building. can some one tell me what to do. (Nerdadolescent 00:35, 24 July 2009 (UTC))
- Wretched Aia might have fallen from the bridge and died. Perhaps Cosmus the Cheat had the same fate, although he is less likely to die that way than Aia. But you don't have to talk to the beggars, I think. You can still finish the quest without having spoken to the beggars, but I'm not entirely sure. Wolok gro-Barok 09:33, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

In case you cant get by a locked door!
ok, many of you have been asking about how to get behind a locked door that needs a key. the door is by 2 conjures and after a pit of water. And i quote from the article:
"As you explore you will eventually find a door that says it needs a key to be unlocked. There is in fact no key available to open this door. Instead the way through is an underwater passage. To the south of that door there is a water-filled cavern containing a very deep shaft. About ten feet down (only part of the way down) there is a tunnel on the north side of the shaft. The tunnel is located immediately below a rock "bridge" in the middle of the shaft that connects the north and south walls, and is at the same vertical level where several rays of light are clearly visible shining through the water. A slaughterfish usually guards the entrance to the tunnel. This tunnel leads around a corner then emerges out of the water on the other side of the locked door."

Key
Where is the key to Fathis Aren's tower? — Unsigned comment by 207.188.66.2 (talk) on 28 February 2010
- The key is in the same chest as the Arrow of Extrication in the Tower itself. Alternatively, you can pickpocket the key from Fathis before the quest. --SerCenKing Talk 14:31, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Aren's Tower acts like a city
Maybe it's worth mentioning that his tower is designed like a city. Unlike similar sites where the tower is an external area and the dungeon is an internal area, here the tower is an internal area as well, which explains for example why detect life doesn't work from outside, and why jumping out from inside the tower is not a good idea. Furthermore, i noticed that you can fast travel from inside his tower which to my knowledge can't be done from any other kind of internal area except cities (Although, i only noticed that after exiting his tower - by using the key - and then reentering, so i am not sure if it would work the very first time you enter his tower through the dungeon). Arrow stuck!
The Arrow of Extrication is stuck in my inventory, even though I have finished the quest. It wont let me drop it because it iS still marked as a quest item. Its it very annoying!— Unsigned comment by 114.30.99.136 (talk) at 13:21 on 11 May 2010
- This arrow will be used in the final Thieves Guild quest, so that's why it's still a quest item. Talk Wolok gro-Barok Contributions 17:45, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

As Arch-Mage
When I did this quest I was Arch-Mage and did not have to steal the arrow. The chest it was in, as well as some of the stuff on the tables were not marked as stealing. Is this normal? --DKong27 16:07, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- I've just deleted most of the stuff in that section because it's irrelevant to the quest. The answer to your question is "Yes, it is normal because the chest isn't marked as 'owned'". That means all the other detail was to do with what happens if you take other items, so it's entirely irrelevant here.
- This isn't just taken from the CS either. In-game, Aren was perfectly happy to see me walk up the the chest, take everything (not just the arrowhead) and then walk away. I could even stop for a pleasant chat with him. rpeh •T•C•E• 11:29, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
As archmage can you still be expelled?
just wondering... people say you get expelled for killing this guy, but would i be expelled if i am arch mage?AdairTheNord 15:25, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
- In my experience, yes. But if you pay the bloodprice and get back in, you go back to being Archmage again. Wordmama 14:33, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
Blood Price Glitch
Hey, I killed the count and his guard and have to pay their blood price. I went to Armand first thing after retrieving the arrow and it won't let me pay. Ditto for S'Krivva. But the thing is, I went to the Gray Fox and gave him the arrow and then he asked if I wanted to pay the blood price. I said yes and all was fine. I tried to put that on the page and they removed it. Can someone tell me why?174.101.17.195 20:52, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
I can confirm that as well, I had the same thing happen.
Arrow of extriaction
PLZ help me!!! Im standing on the block that lets me shoot my arrows Iv got the perfect spot but it wont let me use the arrow!! whats that all about
Well This is Awkward...
Well, when I started the Arrow of Extrication quest, I could not find the Gray Fox. Anywhere. Not in Bruma, and not in Chorrol. I bypassed this with console codes, and ended going too far -- I know have the entry saying I have retrieved the Arrow. I added the Arrow using the console, and then stopped to think about this for a moment: if the Fox never shows up, I'm almost definitely screwed. So I was wondering if there is any way to fix this or at least make the Fox appear properly. Thanks.--Kalis AgeaYes? Contrib E-mail 02:16, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- How is it that he wasn't in Chorrol when you started the quest? Is he still not there now that you have the arrow? Maybe you should enable him, and use moveto. ~ Dwarfmp 04:12, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- Well, the Chorrol bug was covered on the Bugs section, but it said to check in Bruma and he wasn't there. I'll try those codes.--Kalis AgeaYes? Contrib E-mail 04:17, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- Hmmm... the codes don't seem to be working... I'll figure it out some other time. Thanks for trying to help me out, though! It's probably just an error in my codes or something. But I do wonder if this bug occurs often (where he never shows up in either house).--Kalis AgeaYes? Contrib E-mail 08:22, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Invisibility
(moved from the article) Note: Here is an option if you are a member of the Mage’s Guild and don’t wish to be kicked out. If you use a Strong Invisibility Potion when you get out of the catacombs (don’t try this method without carrying an absolute minimum of 5 potions) you can sneak up invisible to the other levels (don’t try this with real low level sneak or they will hear you as you pass them) and go right past all the monsters to Fathis Aren's lab. Then you can get behind him and pickpocket for his key. The invisible potion will end as soon as you interact with anything so you’ll need to drink another after pickpocketing him. You must eventually go into his line of sight to get the arrow but if you remain invisible up to opening the chest and then immediately drink another as you become visible again although he will think he sees you and will draw a weapon and come investigate, if you stay out of his way as quietly as possible Fathis Aren will say something like his eyes are playing tricks on him and go back to his work. You can then exit the tower with him none the wiser, so as long as you haven’t been seen stealing from any of the other barrels and chests by anything or anyone you will not have jeopardized your membership in the Mage’s Guild.
- Wow. TL; DR, bracketitis and seems to be about stuff you don't need to do anyway. rpeh •T•C•E• 16:54, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
Possible Bug (Moved from Page)
An IP user recently added a comment to the page about a possible bug: Fathis Aren will not talk to you if you bring him the sword for the Sins of the Father quest, instead closing dialogue with "Our business is done". Since I can't check this at the moment, can someone confirm whether this is a quest-breaking bug or just a one-off. Of course, it sounds to me like the workaround would be simple (i.e. do the Arrow quest before Sins of the Father) but it would be beneficial to document this kind of bug. Thanks!--Kalis AgeaYes? - You have to give the sword to Fathis Ules, not Fathis Aren. Kitkat1749 •Talk•Contrib•E-mail 13:51, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Mythic Dawn Bug
I'm going to post it here just to see if I'm the only one who had this bug while on this quest. I made the mistake of attempting to explore the castle and I ran into Hans Black-Nail. He told me to get out, followed me everywhere I went (when invisible with Ghostwalk) and then to top it off when I went back into the county hall he had turned into a Hythic Dawn Initiate and was attacking me. I hit once, and was confronted by the guards for assault, then the moment I'm let out of the dungeon I get the update saying I killed someone, and I get arrested again for that (having to pay the 1000 bounty so I don't go to jail). Anyone else get this bug or is it just me being unlucky. Also I haven't even gotten Martin from Kvatch so I don't know why Mythic Dawn is attacking me when I'm not even at that point in the game. MrHappyJavaMan 08:22, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
- The Mythic Dawn spells are always in the NPCs spellbook, so they will use it whenever they go into combat, not just after the Dagon Shrine quest. I think it may be possible that you stayed too long in an owned area and he went hostile on you. And because you were the one trespassing, he was in self defense, making you responsible for the assault. It is interesting though...I wonder if he attacks you after Dagon Shrine if it still gives you a blood price...Gonna check CS...
- Nothing in the script to check for the Dagon Shrine completed. Or the Unofficial Patch. That could be interesting to test. --DKong27 Tk Ctr Em 03:39, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
how can i do it without beggers?
I tried to get a bounty of 100,000 and went on a killing rampage in bravil. I killed any NPC that could die and I ended up killing the beggars by complete accident (i never kill beggars) so now i have quest markers pointing to where the bodies were and it's frustrating. does anybody have a way to fix this other then loading? i'm playing on the xbox360 — Unsigned comment by 98.240.253.177 (talk) at 17:08 on 2 October 2011
- If you go around killing everyone you can, you're bound to break quests and you must be prepared to deal with that. Why don't you just go to Fathis' room? Just check the Castle section in the Detailed Walkthrough, your quest should update ~ Dwarfmp 17:13, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
