Brynjolf stuck[edit]
This is on the Xbox 360. I'm trying to meet Karliah at the standing stone. However, Brynjolf has not left the Thieve's Guild and Karliah is nowhere to be found. Brynjolf is no longer interactive. He just states "I'm just as puzzled as you, lad" and "I think we can trust Karliah, let's see what she's on about". While not game breaking, it does break the Thieve's Guild questline. 99.245.154.84 03:53, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
- getstage return 25 (which I did not accelerate), but I'm standing next to the stone and there is noone. I saw Brynjolf in rifton. I made a lot of quests since my last interaction with the thieves guild and I do not want to go back. 95.88.148.64 16:03, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
-
- EDIT: I made it! player.placeatme 0001B07F (the baseid for karliah) and she was here and I could speak to her. 95.88.148.64 16:09, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
- EDIT3: (yeah, sorry for cursing): I tried some other methods (cause she didnt move), including porting her from the tavern in winterhold (where she got stuck before). this leads to her walking away from the stone. If I port her to the thieves guild, she says something about preparation from the stone, but walks somewhere to the north.
- By spawning a stuck clone of her next to the stone, the door opens. I can go in, brynjolf spawns and I can port karliah, too. Then we walk to the room with the fires, where she tells us to walk to the stone. It doesn't matter where I stand (at least I couldn't figure out), she walks out after this (search for "Skyrim Thieves Guild Karliah bug (360)?" on yahoo answers). I tried to ignore that, running as fast as I can to the stone, waiting for the signal, putting the armor on, but the quest target isn't fulfilled :(
- I will do some other testing, but up to now, it seems to be a mess to complete this quest :/
- Oh, and @nephele: it was inappropriate, but not pointless, cause my previous comment didn't really work and I wanted others to know. 95.88.148.64 18:17, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

- Solving the bugged quest by disabling the gates and using moveto to move Karliah into the cave (prid 58f1a, moveto player) and setting the quest stages to get the armor (setstage 42) and activate the cutscene (setstage 55) with Noctunal will result in not being able to speak to Karliah later (She only answeres Hmmm.). If you spawn a new one she will point you to Brynjolf and he will tell you about becoming the guild master. Then she will move to the cellar in Winterhold and TG08B will not start. I've tried many things and used the moveto with Brynjolf and her to activate each talk in the cave but it won't repair her false destination and won't update her discussion options. I don't think it is possible to fix this one ingame. I hope Bethesda will release a big update soon to fix all the issues they should have found during beta testing. 91.42.214.185 00:07, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
- Edit: I was able to track down this bug. It's related to TG06 (Hard answers). That quest has a bug where the quest stages won't update even if the quest finishes. The bug can be solved by talking to Calcemo or visiting the Dwemer Museum again and redoing the steps. The quest will reactivate if the stages are redone where it got stuck. On PC you can simply setstage TG06 60, go to the cellar in Winterhold Inn and talk to Enthir and Karliah. The quest will end correctly and Karliah will move to the Hideout. She and Brynjolf will be at the entrance of the cave. Will add this to the page. 91.42.214.185 00:45, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

- Re: "Setstage TG06 60" - Karliah and Enthir are placed correctly in that bar in Winterhold. But Karliah only answers "hmm" which makes completing the quest impossible. So... no confirm here, just f.y.i. — Unsigned comment by 87.152.21.86 (talk) at 23:03 on 30 November 2011

(←) I think I have fixed this on mine. I used Setstage TG06 60 to spawn Karliah and Elthir in the inn basement. Then travelled there and used player.placeatme for Karliah. I was able to talk to the new Karliah (the old one was just saying 'hmm'. After that the old Karliah proceeded out of the inn. She never showed up at the Thieves guild though, so I used placeatme again and this continued the quest. I went to the Standing Stone and both Karliah and Bryn were there and Karliah opened the gate without getting stuck, then went inside. I was able to complete the rest of the quest including getting the armour and performing the ritual. Rich83 21:10, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
- The quest does not continue because the quest progress is not recorded properly. That is, getstage TG06 will return some number < 200. The solution is not to use player.placeatme 0001B07F as this will spawn a duplicate Karliah with broken AI. Instead, use:
- setstage TG06 200
- in the console, which will move the quest progress to the correct point. Now, simply wait at the standing stones (24 to 48 hours, since Karliah has a long walk) and both she and Brynjolf will be waiting there *and* be fully interactive. Be sure to save the game before activating the Armour stone in case other reported bugs take hold. — Unsigned comment by 85.53.145.220 (talk) at 13:19 on 6 December 2011

- Sure enough, this worked for me. Had the same symptom, turns out TG06 (Hard Answers) was at stage 27. I set it to 200 to finish it, and within a day both of them were at the stone.Not1975 15:09, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

(←) Terribly sorry for asking about something that seems obvious to you guys but HOW do you use the setstage TG06 200 command? I mean, where do you put it? Can it be used on an XBOX 360 console? Some hands-on practical hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! — Unsigned comment by 79.102.139.150 (talk) at 23:23 on 24 June 2014
- Counter-intuitively, "console" commands only apply to the PC. You can't use them on gaming consoles. In this case, the term "console" refers to a command-line prompt available in the PC version of the game. – Robin Hood (talk) 23:26, 24 June 2014 (GMT)
Master thief[edit]
Brynjolf will address the issue of the leadership of the Thieves' Guild, saying that he and Karliah think you would be the right person for the job. If you have done all the theives guild additional jobs.
This isn't correct - they proposed this to me even though I didn't finish any of the side quests.--83.20.56.139 07:15, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Possible bug fix (at least for me)[edit]
I had a annoying time trying to complete this quest, however I have done it now. Firstly Karliah just walked out, I fixed that by standing on the other side of her, which is already on the page. Then she pulled the string for the gate twice, which caused the gate to open and then close again. After reloading again i quickly ran through the gate. Then i waited one hour and that made Karliah and Brynjolf stand on their pedestals.(Something I found on Google) After talking to Nocturnal, i waited another hour, which transported Karliah and Brynjolf away. However now i was stuck. As I have always played Oblivion on the 360, i was not familiar with console codes, so i that time i did not know i could simply fly through it with tcl. So i saved to go looking on the internet, and i found disable. However after reloading Karliah and Brynjolf were stuck behind the gate again. Disabling the gate allowed for both them and me to walk out. I have not finished the thieves guild quest line, only the next quest Blindsighted, cause i want to keep the skeleton key, so i don't know if something wil happen at the end of my quest line. I hope my description will help other people to complete the quest, but because i did no testing i didn't put it on the main article. If someone can confirm that simply disabling the gate will fix everything, that would be a nice fix for PC users! --Bign0se 21:26, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
- Luckily I had saved right before I clicked on the stone to get the Nightingale Armor. After going back to the save several times, I was able to finally get it to work. By talking to Karliah *before* she has the next conversation with Brynjolf, I had a new sequence of dialogue options where I learned about the nightingales and Nocturnal. After that, I dismissed my companion (not sure if I needed to, but I was getting tired of trying things at this point, and I didn't want Lydia's being around to mess things up. Then I stood way back down the hallway, next to the pull chain, while Karliah and Brynjolf talked things over. When they were done talking and just standing there, I slowly walked up to them, and as Karliah moved towards me, I kept backing up, getting her to walk the correct way down the hallway some. This time, after the conversation where I agree to become a Nightingale, she finally walked the correct way and pulled the chain to open the gate, allowing the quest sequence to proceed. --Kamiccolo 02:14, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
-
- Yes that seems to work, however my specific problem was that she pulled the string twice for some reason. This made the gate first open and then immidiatly close, i could get through if i was quick enough, but then i was stuck inside. when i finnaly got her to pull the string, i did do everything you said above, with a LOT of reloads. That she pulls the string twice seems to be rare, though i found some cases on google. I would like to hear confirmation (and fixes, maybe quickly attacking her after she pulls it the first time or something) from other people where she pulls the string twice, because this especcially sucks for console players! --Bign0se 14:09, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

- I followed her as she "glitch" walked away and she got stuck walking the up "ramp" near the entrance then turned around, walked back, and opened the gate. --Moukou 3:35, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

- After Karliah pulls the chain the first time, I hit her with the Unrelenting Force shout (pushing her towards the stones) and that worked, Karliah and Brynjolf both walked through.(PC)Manhunter28 06:49, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

Armor leveling[edit]
Since you can go back and re-obtain the Nightingale armor later, is this a way to obtain the highest level version if you originally got it at a low level? It would be nice to avoid gimping one's own equipment.166.182.3.107 15:00, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Next quest bug[edit]
(adding this to the disc page rather than main as I'm unsure of how tightly you want things edited and confirmed)
I finished the Trinity Restored quest and talked to both characters. TR was marked as finished in my journal but blindsided wouldn't start. I had to reload an earlier save; my amateurish attempts at using setstage for a quest that had not started (i.e. blindsided) did not suceed. Please incorporate into main article if it pleases the community. — Unsigned comment by 46.239.122.40 (talk) at 03:27 on 3 January 2012
- Its happened to me to. At the end of Trinity Restored after 2 bugs that i fixed there's a 3rd bug. After Trinity Restored i don't get the new quest which is Blindsighted. If there's any fix to this bug i would be most grateful. I dont have acsess to the next quest location and its locked but Karliah and Brynjolf start walking to the quest. (I think). So if you have a fix please Post it. — Unsigned comment by 67.84.10.29 (talk) at 02:21 on 15 February 2012

- Same here, xbox 360, I wonder if it has something to do with not doing Trinity Restored right after receiving it? I waited many game days before going to complete it only to discover Bryn won't leave Riften and Karliah went to winterhold. -.- — Unsigned comment by 50.135.172.204 (talk) at 07:49 on 9 March 2012

- I had this problem on the 360. Not really sure what I can do to fix the bug, I had to dual save and go from level 45 to a level 32 save and redo a LOT of stuff to get the achievement, but now with my main I can't finish the Thieve's guild. — Unsigned comment by 98.240.45.241 (talk) at 20:40 on 10 March 2012

For those who do not wish to sell their character's soul[edit]
Some may say it's silly, but I did not want to have my character sell his soul to Nocturnal for eternity. However by the time you learn this, you're deep in the thieves guild questline and your only option is to back out of the conversation with Karliah and leave. This leaves Trinity Restored stuck in your journal forever and you never get revenge against Mercer for betraying (and stabbing) you. I have found a way for PC players to get around this, and instead play the quest as if you rejected Karliah's offer to join the Nightingales and instead went after Mercer on your own.
Do not stand on the altar to have your soul sold to Nocturnal. Leave and travel to Irkngthand. Fight your way up to the top of the outdoor area as normal, but you'll find there's no way to get up to the locked door. You'll simply have to tcl and fly up there, then target the door in the console and use the unlock command to get inside. From here, you can fight your way through Irkngthand alone. Brynjolf and Karliah will not accompany you and Mercer will not appear until you get to the final room where the confrontation with Mercer takes place. This part of the quest will proceed normally; Mercer will cast the spell that breaks the platform, engage you in conversation, and the other two nightingales will attack each other as normal. You may then kill Mercer and loot him as well as the Falmer eyes. He will not have the skeleton key in his inventory and adding it to his inventory didn't work. You must additem 3a070 to your inventory or Mercer's and then setstage tg08b 50. This will update the quest and cause the ceiling escape to open. You can now finish the quest normally and receive Karliah's bow. Darkness Returns will start. If you're reading this I presume you wish to avoid all contact with Nocturnal and now consider the questline complete, with the skeleton key as your 'reward'. You can now resetquest tg08a and tg09, then save your game and reload it. Trinity Restored and Darkness Returns will be gone from your quest journal. Note that this will prevent you from becoming leader of the Thieves guild and from receiving the Nightingale Blessings. — Unsigned comment by 75.34.55.137 (talk) at 19:55 on 19 January 2012
- Thanks! I was not liking serving a god as the only choice. Its too bad that many of Skyrims quests have no out and simply stay in your journal. If you are an ethical person, many of the quests can't be solved. That's ok but should be a way to delete them easily. — Unsigned comment by 67.164.33.239 (talk) at 05:03 on 25 January 2012

- Is this even an appropriate section for the discussion page? A description of an exploit to circumvent the quest on the whims of player seems totally out of place and more appropriate for the forums (as evidenced by the fact that "forum like" comments are constantly being deleted from the article including those above). Console commands and workarounds should be for bugs and glitches not content working exactly as intended, otherwise we could put dozens of sections on exploiting to restructure any quest in the game on the discussion page of every article. Unless someone presents a plausible argument to keep this here I'll delete this section in a week or so.--DagmarH 17:30, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Bug[edit]
XBOX 360 Karliah and Brynjolf wont move! Karliah is stuck in the winterhold inn and brynjolf is sstuck in riften. I redid the quest Hard Answers but when i try to talk to karliah all she says is hmm, I need help fixing this please!!! — Unsigned comment by Forbidden (talk • contribs) on 21 January 2012
- I also have this problem. And I try to walk through Hard Answers quest step by step, but it doesn't work. Karliah is still in the cellar of the winterhold inn, saying "hmm.." I tried attacking Karliah, attacking Enthir, pickpicking Karliah, etc. Nothing works. She just keeps saying "hmm..." I'm very tempted to export my Xbox360 game to PC, and then using the console commands to fix it, and then exporting it back. Has anyone tried that? Does it work? I don't want to go through the trouble if it still won't work. — Unsigned comment by 68.231.196.194 (talk) on 5 April 2012

- If you export your game to the PC you could use the console command getstage to get the quest to update even though Karliah and Brynjolf are not present.I hope this helps!--Skyrimplayer 20:20, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
Stuck in the Sepulchre[edit]
In the Twilight Sepulchre, after you have received and equipped your Nightingale Armour, you need to speak to Karliah and she explains the terms of the oath to become a Nightingale. Once you say your ready to take the oath, she's SUPPOSED to walk to the chain, pull it and open the way to the stones. However instead she just turns around and leaves. The player and Brynjolf are then left waiting outside the gate (as only Karliah can pull the chain). Looking for a possible fix. — Unsigned comment by 144.82.212.53 (talk) at 00:28 on 4 February 2012
- I ran into the same bug and found the answer on google. The idea is that she just walks forward after the dialog so you have to stay with your back at the chain. Here is where I found it http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/615805-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/answers?qid=299875 I hope I'm not braking any policy but I was so frustrated by this and really think this guy deserves credit, please someone edit if I did something wrong. Another fix I found myself is to use 'setStage TG08A 57' then use 'prid 00058F1A' and 'moveto player' for the rest of the dialog with her this lets you finish the quest without entering that room but I have no idea of future implications of using this. - HI! New here, and I just wanted to share my 2 cents. I also ran into this. After I got the Objective telling me to "Stand on the vacant floor glyph," Karliah began to walk out on me for the last time (attempted this part over ten times). I quickly typed setstage TG08A 52 ( not 57) and Karliah turned around and walked into the gate, along with Bryn, so I disabled the gate and everything went well. Kyussul 23:35, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Brynjolf wants to go home[edit]
Xbox 360: Karliah appears at the stone, but Brynjolf does not. When entering Nightingale hall, Brynjolf appears, but after Karliah instructs you to don your armor, Brynjolf starts heading back to Riften, not letting you complete the quest.
360 Solution: If you head towards the armor stone quickly, you can get Brynjolf a good way there. Once he turns around, you have to carefully block him by standing in front of him and gently push him back towards the stone. Once you get close enough, activate the armor stone and don your armor. Brynjolf will do the same, though he still tries to head back.
Karliah will start heading towards Nocturnals chamber. Carefully guide Brynjolf by pushing him. Sometimes using the shout can help (Unrelenting Force) Once you get close enough to Karliah, the AI should kick back in long enough for them to have a conversation about the Oath. After the conversation, Brynjolf starts heading back again. Guide him into the chamber, across the first bridge onto the middle platform, then onto the second bridge.
Once fairly close to where Brynjolf should be, quickly run to your standing stone. Brynjolf will start to leave, but even though he crosses the second and first bridges, the AI kicked in for me at that point. Once Nocturnal appears, he turns around and goes back to the standing stone while the Oath takes place.
After the oath, he starts heading back again. Quickly talk with Karliah, then run towards the entrance and speak with Brynjolf before he exits to finish the quest. Once I finished the quest, things seemed to kick back in. Brynjolf turned around and stays in Nightingale Hall, as does Karliah, and the next quest begins. 98.202.126.131 15:58, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
Too busy to talk[edit]
After meeting Karliah at the Thieves Guild in The Pursuit, I ran into a problem. In the vault, the conversation just stops after Brynjolf tells everyone to calm down and focus. They're all "busy" if I try to interact with them. If I leave the Cistern, then that part of the quest is finished and I need to speak to Brynjolf. He is over by the Guild Master's desk, and Karliah is on the other side. I can continue on the quest normally. At the end of the quest, when Brynjolf says that Karliah has something to say, Karliah and Brynjolf leave the Thieves Guild. The Pursuit is finished, but Trinity Restored does not start. I can't talk to Brynjolf, and Karliah only has her normal speech options. They both just leave and don't come back. Can this bug be fixed? It's breaks the whole Thieves Guild quest line. — Unsigned comment by 76.17.165.40 (talk) at 22:52 on 30 June 2012

Exact location of Purloined Shadows?[edit]
The article says 'to the right' once you've crossed the bridge. I looked all around the area (where the tipped over shelf, table and chairs, bed, and hay pile are) and only found Ruined Books, nothing with a title. Obax (talk) 01:22, 23 January 2015 (GMT)
- It should be very close to the half-wall beside the stream. It goes tipped over shelf, bed, large boulder, small boulder, Purloined Shadows, hay. Or at least it does early on. Later, it'll be put on top of a nightstand, but otherwise in the same place. It might be possible for the book to get buried under the nightstand, I'm not sure, but even if it did, it looks like the corner of it would still stick out. – Robin Hood (talk) 02:56, 23 January 2015 (GMT)
