Lore:Escutcheon of Chorrol
The Escutcheon of Chorrol (also known as the Shield of Chorrol[1]) is a massive ebony shield emblazoned with the Great Oak, the symbol of Chorrol.[2] It is enchanted to fortify the wearer's endurance, reflect damage back at attackers,[2] or damage an opponent's magicka.[1]
History[edit]
The origins of the shield are unknown. Given that the Great Oak was a young tree circa 2E 582,[3] the shield was likely created more recently than this date.
In the late Third Era, a thief named Albert Jemane was in the employ of Fathis Ules, a high-ranking member of the Thieves Guild. Albert was tasked with stealing the Honorblade of Chorrol, an ancient heirloom of the ruling Valga family, from Castle Chorrol. Albert succeeded in obtaining the heirloom, but he reneged on Fathis and decided to keep the Honorblade for himself. He fled Chorrol with his family and established a homestead at Weatherleah. However, their new home was soon attacked by a group of local ogres, leaving only Albert's two young sons alive.[4]
Circa 3E 433, the two Jemane brothers were reunited as adults and reclaimed Weatherleah with the help of the Hero of Kvatch. Hearing of these developments, Fathis Ules travelled to Chorrol and hired the Hero to recover the lost Honorblade from the ogre den at Redguard Valley Cave.[5] It is unknown if the Hero agreed to sell the blade to Fathis, or if it was instead returned to Castle Chorrol. According to some, the Hero returned the Honorblade to Countess Arriana Valga and was rewarded with the Escutcheon of Chorrol.[5][1]
Circa 4E 180, the shield was thought to have come into the possession of the Warrior, a former member of the Blades.[1]
