The Fang of Haynekhtnamet is a literal fang which was carved into a blade and fashioned into a small dagger in an exquisite Argonian style.[1][2][3] It is named after Haynekhtnamet, a mythical wamasu from Black Marsh.[1] According to the book Tamrielic Lore, the artifact was created by a score of Nords who fought Haynekhtnamet for seven days and nights before finally bringing the creature down, believing it to be a dragon. One of the survivors took a fang as a trophy, and it was later carved into a dagger which mysteriously houses some of the beast's magical properties. The dagger grants the wielder the ability to shock an opponent.[1] Other reports indicate the dagger was taken from the eponymous wamasu in the Shadowfen region of Black Marsh in 2E 582, This jagged blade was heavily befouled and would cause disease in anyone it struck.[3][nb 1] The Fang of Haynekhtnamet has been seen occasionally by traveling heroes throughout history.[1]

History[edit]

The last living dwarf, Yagrum Bagarn, at one point befriended the sorcerer Divayth Fyr.[4] At Fyr's behest, Yagrum Bagarn wrote a book that would later be known as Tamrielic Lore[5]:241 from the notes that he gathered over the centuries, listing the Fang of Haynemakhet among various items of "unimaginable significance".[1] By the Interregnum, copies of this book circulated throughout Tamriel, providing some general information on the artifact to its readers.[6][nb 2]

The Fang came into the possession of the Sixth House during the late Third Era. It was reportedly recovered in 3E 427 by the Nerevarine during an assault on the Sixth House stronghold of Mamaea.[7] Later that year, the blade was sold to Torasa Aram, who put it on display in her Museum of Artifacts in Mournhold.[8]

Circa 4E 201, the Last Dragonborn came under the tutelage of Swims-In-Deep-Water at Riften's Fishery. They performed many fishing challenges, perfecting their fishing skills while angling in Skyrim's various biomes. From the snow-fringed waters above, to the subterranean streams down below,[9] the Last Dragonborn proved their mettle and was granted the title of the legendary fisherman and the Fang of Haynekhtnamet.[2]

Notes[edit]

  • ^  Due to account disparities, it is speculated that Haynekhtnamet was not actually a single creature, but a series of wamasu.[10] Therefore, it's possible that there are multiple Fangs.
  • ^  ESO's version of Tamrielic Lore is Tamrielic Artifacts. It has an entry on the Fang's creation which exists at the same time the player can obtain the artifact directly from Haynekhtnamet, but if its inclusion is intentional is unknown. ESO's version scrubbed mentions of various artifacts such as the Daedric Crescent and the Dragonbone Cuirass, but erroneously kept the Bow of Shadows' reference to Dram who would not be born until 2E 612
  • In ESO, this item is named "Swamp Raider's Fang of Haynekhtnamet" due to it being part of the Swamp Raider set. Wearing several items from this set will fortify weapon damage and stamina, as well as increase the potency of poison and disease attacks.
