Poet of Galen[1][2] Nynelle Dumaris was a Breton poet active during the times of the Akaviri Potentate. She was the author of numerous poems, including famous sonnets A Lissome Sprite and Fearless as the Sun.[1][2] She was the victor of the poet tournament held in the Imperial City and was acknowledged by the Potentate Savirien-Chorak in 2E 400 who named her the Poet-Champion.[3]

History[edit]

Cathedral of the Evening

Little is known of Nynelle Dumaris' early life. She was born in the fourth century of the Second Era and hailed from the capital of Galen island Vastyr. She was a common-born shopkeeper and an aspiring poet. According to some accounts she was once in love with a dashing young sea captain. This relationship, alongside with her undying love for the Systres was believed to inspire some of her works. Prior to 2E 400 Nynelle was unknown figure beyond the Systres Archipelago.[3]

That changed, however when the Potentate Savirien-Chorak held months of celebrations to commemorate four centuries of potentate rule in the same year. Among the many games and revels in the Imperial Ciy there was a poetry competition in which Nynele Dumaris took part, competing against numerous famous poets from all around Tamriel. Nynele Dumaris, to the surprise of all, won the competition with her sonnet Fearless as the Sun and was named Poet-Champion by the Potentate himself. He offered Nynelle to remain in his court in the capital of the Empire, but she declined, saying that she loved her home too much to leave it forever. She returned to her homeland in Vastyr, where she lived a long life composing scores of beautiful works.[3]

Works and Legacy[edit]

Following her death, she was given burial in a place of honor in the vault of the Cathedral of the Evening, alongside famous knights and great lords. Many in the city of Vastyr say they are the ones honored to rest in her company—not she in theirs.[3]

Among many works of Nynelle the sonnet A Lissome Sprite is the most fondly remembered among the inhabitants of Galen, even though Fearless as the Sun is a more famous work overall, being the song that moved the Potentate himself.[3]
