Highest Mountain[edit]
(moved from the article) As of 4E 200, the time of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Throat of the World would be the tallest mountain in Tamriel, as Red Mountain exploded when the Ministry of Truth crashed into Vvardenfell. The explosion destroyed most of Morrowind, making Solstheim and southern Morrowind the few still-habitable places within the province.
- This isn't necessarily true. First, the eruption of Red Mountain takes place much earlier than 4E200 - some time between 4E1 and 4E40, according to The Infernal City. Second, when volcanoes erupt they often, though not always, get higher, not smaller. We don't know enough about Red Mountain to say for sure whether it's grown or shrunk. rpeh •T•C•E• 12:02, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

- Not always true Rpeh it also depends on what type geologically speaking it was take for example Mt. st. helens which lost height as well as mt. Vesuvius, are the laws of physics different in tamriel or is there information available on this? (94.11.46.130 01:22, 13 November 2011 (UTC))
- Guys, you can see a Morrowind heightmap in Skyrim itself. Red Mountain clearly stands tall. — Unsigned comment by 132.162.73.252 (talk) at 05:45 on 20 November 2011 (GMT)

Adding image[edit]
Anyone considered putting an image of the Throat of the World from the 20min gameplay demo of Skyrim? TESV: Skyrim Demo Part 1 timemark 6:53. Axxchor 18:05, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- Not yet. We'll be able to get much better images when the game is released. rpeh •T•C•E• 18:16, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
Red Mountain is no longer taller[edit]
Although the Pocket Guide to the Empire says that Red Mountain is taller than the Throat of the World, I don't think that is still true. The PGE is over 13 years old, and I think Bethesda has retconned Throat of the World as the tallest mountain in Tamriel.
- I remember pre-release stuff Todd Howard described Throat of the World as the tallest mountain in Tamriel
- There's a loading screen that says Red Mountain is the largest volcano in Tamriel (note that it says volcano, not mountain)
- There's a loading screen that specifically says that the Throat of the World is that tallest mountain in Tamriel (I don't see this screen often, but I have seen it)
Any one of these things I could consider to be a mistake, but I think all three are a good indication of some retconning. Chris3145 01:11, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
- It's possible, though I would like to see some of footage and imagery for myself. Even if it can be confirmed, though, no retcon is necessary to explain it. Red Mountain violently erupted, and though it was taller than the Throat of the World beforehand, it's perfectly reasonable to assume this eruption took a little off the top, so to speak. On a side note, volcanic mountains, whether dormant or active, can still be called mountains. Not all volcanoes are mountains, and not all mountains are volcanoes, but those that are both may be referred to as either interchangeably. Minor Edits 03:23, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

- Red Mountain is both a volcano and a mountain, but the fact that the loading screen refers to it specifically as the tallest volcano in Tamriel suggests that it is not the tallest mountain. If it were taller than the Throat of the World, it would be the tallest mountain and the tallest volcano. Because it is not taller than the Throat of the World, it only gets the title of tallest volcano.
-
- I also tried to get my camera out to snap a picture when I saw this loading screen, but it went away to quickly. When I next get a chance to play (which won't be for a few weeks), I'll try to keep my camera at the ready and fast travel to High Hrothgar and the Throat of the World. Failing that, is there anything in the game files that contains the text on the loading the screens? That would be an easier way to confirm this. Chris3145 05:37, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

- I've seen the loading screens, throat of the world is taller, some of us have been to morrowind in skyrim so theirs the proof, sort of....until I took an arrow to the knee, Br3admax. 05:47, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

- I don't think referring to it as the "tallest volcano" necessarily implies that it is not also the tallest mountain. Calling it a volcano in this instance is more descriptive, conveying more information about the subject that simply calling it a mountain. Since the context leaves limited room for elaboration, and conveying info succinctly is the goal of the loading screen text, I think there's plenty of reason to doubt that Bethesda meant to diminish Red Mountain's standing by referring to it as a volcano instead of a mountain, assuming they do so. I'm not saying you two are wrong, just that I would like to see some visual confirmation. You know, it's the internet, so the law of "Pics or Didn't Happen" applies. - I'll try to get a picture, but it will be a while. Can any PC players see if there is a file that contains loading screen text?Chris3145 19:25, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

- Nephele got the text from a game file and posted it in the community talk portal. I'm typing from a phone, so I can't copy/paste or link it easily, but that should qualify as a good enough source to change the article. Chris3145 20:23, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

By Passing Wind Walls[edit]
Maybe note in the article that it is possible to bypass the wind walls without the clear Skies shout. I rode my horse up the Mountain and reached the Throat of the World early on in the game. Parth isn't there and neither is the pickaxe or the ore deposits.
You can also drop down behind High Hrothgar and get into the building prior to the Grey Beards summoning you. The front door is locked and cannot be picked. The back door is open. — Unsigned comment by NordJitsu (talk • contribs) at 21:51 on 27 March 2013
- That kind of information is more suited to the gamespace page. The lore's more about big-picture, conceptual information. Minor EditsThreats•Evidence 23:09, 28 March 2013 (GMT)
