Burz gro-Khash

Burz gro-Khash is an Orc barbarian and the head of the Cheydinhal Fighters Guild. He's one of the first people you will report to for many of the quests.

He's not particularly impressed with the other two Guardian rank fighters residing in the Cheydinhal guildhall, and spends most of his time alone without talking too much with anyone. He sleeps in the upstairs area every night between midnight and 6am. After waking up and as long as it is not raining, he immediately exits the house and heads for the small island between the two bridges and enjoys the sunrise and silence for four hours. If it is raining, he will choose to remain inside the guildhall and simply wander around. At 10am he heads back to the guildhall and wanders around there all day, only interrupted by a brief visit into the basement at 2pm. At 6pm he picks up some food and enjoys a two-hour dinner. The rest of the evening is spent drifting sleepily around in the upstairs area before he goes to bed at midnight.

He wears a complete set of enchanted fur armor (Boots of the Cheetah, Cuirass of the Bear, Gauntlets of the Horker, Greaves of the Cat, and Tiger Fang Shield), and carries around a leveled glass mace, which has the distinction of being the only non-enchanted leveled weapon in the game. He also carries a burgundy linen shirt, burgundy linens, and a pair of thick cowhide shoes that he will change into when he goes to bed and a small amount of gold.

Dialogue and Rumors[edit]

Cheydinhal
"This guild is going to hell in a hogcart. Look at what they give me? Keld of the Isles? Ohtimbar? Both Guardian rank? Phah! Useless."

Burz's dislike for his guildmates has not gone unnoticed, as Keld of the Isles will remark:

Cheydinhal
"I've settled down here. Nice place. A little slow, but it suits me. Burz gro-Khash is a bear sometimes, but I got thick skin. Doesn't bother me."

Quest-Related Dialogue[edit]

Join the Fighters Guild[edit]

Asking Fighters Guild members about joining will have them point you to Burz:

"If you're interested, see Vilena Donton in Chorrol, or Azzan in Anvil, or Burz gro-Khash in Cheydinhal."

Indeed, when you're inside the Guildhall, he will say:

"What do you want? A job? If you want it from me, you'll have to join the Fighters Guild. Not that I'm sure you can cut it."
Join the Fighters Guild
"The Fighters Guild is always looking for new members. If you've got a clean record, and don't have a bounty on your head, we may be able to use you. Are you interested in joining?"
I'm not interested.
"Fine by me. No great loss. Let me know if you change your mind, though. We can always use fresh meat."

If you agree to join, he will reject you if you currently have a bounty or if your Infamy is at least 100 while your Fame is below 100:

Yes. Sign me up.
"Hmmm... I don't think so. You're a wanted criminal. Don't know what you did, but I know the rules. Come back if you clear that up."
"Hmph. Word on the street is that you've been into some bad business. That's not good for the Guild. Clean up your act and come back later."

Otherwise, he will welcome you to the guild:

Yes. Sign me up.
"Good, I guess. You're now an Associate in the Fighters Guild. Report to me or Azzan in Anvil for contracts. And don't screw up."

The Desolate Mine[edit]

After you've joined, greeting him will net you:

"You here looking for work, meat? Maybe you want a contract?"
Contract
"I suppose I've got something for you. We need a weapons shipment delivered to Desolate Mine. That's your job."

As you walk away he will say:

"Move your ass, boot."

If all your companions are dead and you return before clearing out all the goblins, he will seethe:

"Haven't you taken care of that weapons shipment yet? Those weapons won't deliver themselves!"
Contract
"They're all dead? Well, you'll have to take over for them. Get back there and clear out that mine. Get moving!"

Once you've killed all the creatures, his response to your return will depend on whether all your companions survived or not:

Contract
"You got the weapons there and cleared the mine with no casualties. Better than I expected from you. Here's your reward, and a little bonus."
"Well, you got the weapons there, but there were casualties after. Do better in the future, or don't come to me for work. Here's your reward."

Amelion's Debt[edit]

Once you've completed Drunk and Disorderly, speak to Burz for another contract:

"I've got another contract for you, meat. I assume you won't embarrass yourself."
Contract
"It's from Biene Amelion at the Water's Edge settlement. She needs something retrieved from her ancestral tomb. Try not to muck it up."
Biene Amelion
"You'll find her at the Water's Edge settlement. It's marked on your map."

He will send you off with:

"Haul your carcass to that settlement, meat."

Once you return, he will initially be dissatisfied:

"Why aren't you in Water's Edge?"
"You need to finish out the contract with Biene Amelion in Water's Edge. What's the status?"

His response will then vary depending on which path you took during the quest:

Biene Amelion
"Got a sword and armor for her, huh? Not bad work, meat. Here's your payment for the contract."
"Paid her debt off yourself, did you? Not gonna get rich that way, meat. Still, the job's done. Here's your payment."

The Fugitives[edit]

After you have helped Modryn Oreyn take care of Azani Blackheart, Burz will have a new task for you regarding some outlaws on the run:

"What can I do for you, meat? Need something to do?"
Contract
"I've got something for you. Could be tough. There are some escaped fugitives for you to find, meat."
Prison Break
"Some real hard cases got out of the Bravil prison. Been terrorizing the locals ever since. The Watch is useless, so we step in. Get to it."
Fugitives
"Apparently, there are three or four of them. Real nasty, from what I hear. You take care of them. Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll surrender."

He will then send you off with:

"Find the fugitives. Make yourself useful."
"Get to hunting, meat."

If you speak to him again before having completed your mission, he will be annoyed when approached:

"I don't suppose you've found those fugitives yet."
"Shouldn't you be in Bravil? Being useful?"

When you return from dispatching the outlaws in Bloodmayne Cave, he will say:

"You've got a contract to take care of. Why are you talking to me?"
Prison Break
"Took care of all of them, did you? And you're still alive. Fantastic. You're full of surprises. Here's your payment. Good work."

The Noble's Daughter[edit]

After the disaster at Forsaken Mine, you will need to report to Burz for your next assignment, far away from the grieving Vilena Donton. Once you arrive he will grunt:

"I'll assume you're back for more work, because I don't see a big need to chat with you."
Contract
"I've got more for you. Important stuff, actually. You need to go talk to Lord Rugdumph."
Lord Rugdumph
"He's an Orcish noble. A fine man. Our families go back a bit. Anyway, his daughter is missing. Head to his estate and talk to him. Find his daughter. And mind your manners! I don't want you embarassing [sic] me!"
Lady Rogbut
"A fine model of an Orcish woman. Now go find her. And don't be rude, or she'll rip your ears off."

On leaving conversation he will growl:

"Go help Lord Rugdumph. And wipe that smile off your face!"

Approaching him after this will net you:

"Didn't I send you to see Lord Rugdumph?"

Once you save the lady from her Ogre captors and return to Burz, he will greet you with:

"You need to go find Lady Rogbut, meat! Why are you standing here talking to me?"
Lady Rogbut
"You got her back in one piece? Good work! I've always liked that girl. May have to look her up sometime. Here's your payment."

Mystery at Harlun's Watch[edit]

Burz's final quest will start once you've rescued Lady Rogbut:

"Here for more work? I've got one more contract for you."
Contract
"I've got one more for you, meat. I assume you can handle it. I need you to investigate some disappearances at Harlun's Watch."
Disappearances
"Some folks are missing in Harlun's Watch. We've been contracted to find out what's happened. Speak to Drarana Thelis for all the details. Get going."

He will dismiss you with:

"Stop wasting time. Get to Harlun's Watch. Now."

Once you return he will grunt:

"Thought I sent you to Harlun's Watch."
"You're supposed to be helping out the folks at Harlun's Watch. What's the status?"
Contract
"You were supposed to check out those disappearances at Harlun's Watch. What's the status?"
Disappearances
"Trolls, huh? And drawn in by will-o-the-wisps? There's some lousy luck for you. Well, here's your payment. Afraid to say, I don't have any more contracts for you."

Depending on whether or not you have already completed The Stone of St. Alessia he will remark:

"I don't think Azzan has any, either. You did pretty good work, meat."
"Maybe Azzan has some, but I don't know. You did pretty good work, meat."

If you ask him for work, he'll simply say:

Contract
"I've got nothing else for you."

Aftermath[edit]

Once you've taken charge of the Guild, when approached he will joke:

"Heard they made you master. Gods help us all."
"What's on your mind, Guildmaster? Need me to kill something?"

Unused Dialogue[edit]

  • Burz's opening greeting was meant to reference Jiub from Morrowind: "I'm Burz gro-Khash, and I'm in charge of this St. Jiub's Fair. All I need is clowns, monkeys, and jugglers. No. Wait... just need jugglers.... Yeah. This is the Cheydinhal Fighter's Guild. Look around. See any fighters? Right. That's the problem. No fighters, no guild." However, it is always overridden by his recruitment greeting.
  • One line for the Join the Fighters Guild topic is always overriden: "Hmmm... I suppose there's always room for fresh meat. Of course, we like our meat to be clean -- good reputation, not wanted by the law. You in?"
  • During The Desolate Mine quest, Burz has an unused line for the Contract topic in case you'd cleared the mine before speaking to him: "You've already cleared that place of all the goblins? Go figure. Fine. Then I guess you don't need to deliver those weapons." However, this condition is impossible to fulfill, as the inner part of the mine is behind a key-requiring door.
  • During The Fugitives, he had another line if you'd asked him about Contract after getting tasked: "You need to take care of those fugitives from the prison break in Bravil." However, the topic never appears and you thus won't hear it.
  • After Trolls of Forsaken Mine, Burz was meant to have two greetings which are never heard. The first would have been chosen if your rank was that of Defender, which is not possible at this stage. The second would have been chosen at the correct rank of Guardian, but is overridden by another, which can cause a serious bug.
"I've got some news for you. Vilena wasn't happy when she heard about Viranus. No shock there. She expelled Oreyn from the guild. It's a damn shame. And you've been demoted to the rank of Defender. Hell, even I don't think you deserved that. But, it is what it is. Move on."

Bugs[edit]

  • If you have not sought advancement to the rank of Guardian before completing Trolls of Forsaken Mine and speak to Burz before Azzan for contracts, you will never be demoted to Defender and won't be able to advance to Guardian even by completing The Noble's Daughter and Mystery at Harlun's Watch. This in turns prevents you from starting The Stone of St. Alessia and from completing the Fighters Guild questline.
  • When you meet Burz for the first time and ask him about the Fighters Guild, his spoken comment does not match the subtitles. They present you with the common Fighters Guild response: "I love being in the guild. There's money to be made. If you'd like to join up, let me know." In the spoken dialogue, Burz will mistakenly point you towards Vilena Donton for guild membership, even if he is able to let you join himself: "I love being in the guild. There's money to be made. If you're interested, find Vilena Donton in Chorrol."
  • Similar to his companion Keld of the Isles, Burz was supposed to have a sparring session from 2pm to 6pm. However, the package is erroneously set as a "Find" type instead of a "Use Item" type. This causes him to simply take a short trip to the basement and then simply stroll around the guildhall.
