Pelinal Whitestrake is the Divine Crusader, an Imperial knight added by the Knights of the Nine official download. In the First Era he fought on behalf of the human slaves of Cyrodiil using enchanted gifts bestowed upon him by the Eight Divines.
He slew the Ayleid Sorcerer-King Umaril the Unfeathered in order to free Cyrodiil from the Ayleid oppressors and ushered in a new era of peace. His victory was short-lived as Umaril's cohorts quickly defeated him afterwards. Dying, Pelinal realized that Umaril would one day return and seek his vengeance on mankind and the gods who aided him.
After completing the Pilgrimage quest, you receive a vision from Pelinal to receive the quest The Shrine of the Crusader. Throughout many of the Knights of the Nine quests, you will retrieve the Relics of the Crusader, the armor and weapons of this holy knight, which are needed to destroy Umaril the Unfeathered again.
He wears a full set of level 1 heavy Armor of the Crusader and wields a special unenchanted version of the Sword of the Crusader (editor ID NDWeaponSwordPelinal
, formID xx000f2f
).

Quest-Related Events
Pelinal is mentioned in multiple books, notably the six volumes of the The Song of Pelinal and The Adabal-a. Passing references are also made to him in Before the Ages of Man, Hallgerd's Tale, The Knights of the Nine, Shezarr and the Divines and Vernaccus and Bourlor.
He is first mentioned in the game by The Prophet in front of the destroyed Chapel of Dibella in Anvil:
- "Who will stand for the Eight and One? Who will complete Pelinal's holy mission of vengeance upon Umaril the Unfeathered?"
- "Pelinal Whitestrake once struck down the enemies of man and god. Who will now reclaim his Relics and fight again for the true faith?"
- "Cut eight-wise he was, Pelinal the Blamer, champion of Men, and though dispersed he left us a warning! Heed it!"
- "Umaril is returned, as was foretold by the head of Pelinal to the Bull of Kyne in those days of old Cyrodiil."
- "The gods, the Eight Attendants of Saint Pelinal when he smote down Umaril the Unfeathered..."
- "Spake Peninal [sic]: "Beware, Morihaus, beware! With the foresight of death I know now that my foe yet lives, bitter knowledge to take to my grave..." Better that I had died believing myself the victor. Although cast beyond the doors of night, he will return. Be vigilant! I can no longer shield the host of Men from Umaril's retribution." Thus spake Pelinal in the hour of his death."
When spoken to, the Prophet will elaborate:
- Anvil Chapel attack
- "This is only the beginning. Umaril has returned, as foretold by Pelinal Whitestrake in his dying breath!"
- Umaril? Who's that?
- "Umaril the Unfeathered, the sorceror-king of the Ayleids who ruled over this land for long ages before the rise of Men. He was cast down by Pelinal Whitestrake. But Umaril's spirit survived, and now he has returned to seek vengeance upon the gods."
- Who is Pelinal Whitestrake?
- "Does no one remember the old tales? Saint Pelinal, the Divine Crusader of legend -- Alessia's companion when she overthrew the rule of the Ayleids 3,000 years ago. Pelinal, with the aid of the gods, fought the Ayleid sorceror-king Umaril and slew him. But Umaril's spirit survived, and he has now returned!"
Speaking to him again after he has discussed pilgrimage with you will net you some more information:
- Crusader's Relics
- "The weapons and armor of Pelinal Whitestrake. Alessia's comrade, granted to him by the Eight Divines. He went alone in the White Gold Tower, challenged the Ayleid sorceror-king Umaril to single combat, and slew him. Alas, Umaril was not truly slain, but only cast beyond the bounds of Nirn. And now he has returned to wreak his vengeances upon the gods, as was prophesied by Pelinal himself with his dying breath."
- Umaril
- "He was defeated, but not destroyed, by Pelinal the Crusader. Now he has returned to seek vengeance against the gods."
After completing your pilgrimage, Pelinal will appear to you in a vision, approach you and give the following speech:
- "Hail knight! You seek my Relics with a worthy heart! Your prayers have woken me from my endless dream. Or perhaps you have entered my dream, and I still sleep. I think others have sometimes spoken to me, others like you, but my memory is doubtful. Perhaps the others came after you. Your need must be great for the gods to allow us to speak. Has Umaril the Accursed found a way back? The foulest of a foul race. A thousand curses upon his unholy name! I thought I'd won. But I should have known. The Slavemasters are a cunning breed. Umaril found a way to cheat death, as I could not. If you would seek for my Relics, I know little that can help you. All that has passed since my death is like mist that my mind cannot take hold of. My friends built a shrine upon the site of my death, where the Elves tormented me in a final act of revenge. I can show you where it once stood. Perhaps it is there still. Fare thee well, sir knight. May the gods grant you to destroy Umaril utterly, as I failed to do."
Speaking to the Prophet after this will have him inform you:
- Crusader's Relics
- "Pelinal was taken by the Ayleids after his battle with Umaril, and his body cut into eight parts and scattered across their realm. After the fall of White Gold Tower, his friend Morihaus the Indomitable found Pelinal's still-living head, kept alive in torment by Ayleid magicks."
As you progress in your quests for the relics, you will glean more tidbits of information. Sir Ralvas or Carodus Oholin will tell you:
- Mace of Zenithar
- "Legends say that when Pelinal Whitestrake was slain by the Ayleids, a messenger carried the Mace to the human settlement of Leyawiin as a message."
Meanwhile once you retrieve the Sword of Crusader, you will start hearing rumors saying:
- "They say that Pelinal Whitestrake has returned, and will soon put a stop to that Ayleid monster who's been terrorizing the chapels!"
During The Blessing of Talos, the Prophet will add:
- "You must first kill his living body. While beyond the power of most mortals, this is only the lesser of your two tasks. His Daedric nature allows his spirit to escape into Oblivion after death. This is what Pelinal learned upon defeating Umaril the first time. But you can do what Pelinal could not. The Blessing of Talos will allow you to follow Umaril's spirit when it leaves his body."
Meanwhile in Garlas Malatar, Umaril himself will call Pelinal out:
- "Rahtan Pelinale na anda!"
- "Pelinal's reach is long!"
- "Pelinal na vasha. Sa yando tye."
- "Pelinal is gone [dead]. So also [will] you [be]."
After defeating Umaril, the knights will compliment you:
- Knights of the Nine
- "The Order lives once more. Pelinal himself would be proud of what we've accomplished."
Notes
- He is voiced by Wes Johnson.
- See the lore version for more information on Pelinal Whitestrake.
- Pelinal has brown hair beneath his helmet. Although described in lore as having white hair, this would correlate with the line in The Song of Pelinal, v 4 where he was described as having "white hair gone brown with elfblood". However, his face can never actually be seen in-game during regular gameplay.
Bugs
- Pelinal exists from the beginning of any game loaded with Knights of the Nine present, making him susceptible to use of console commands such as
killall
used near the Imperial City. - In rare situations, Pelinal may fall from where he spawns and you may receive a message on the top of the screen that reads "Pelinal Whitestrake is unconscious". ?
