Quest-Related Events[edit]

Before you start the quest:

"I'm quite busy at the moment, sorry. I'll be lucky if this haul allows me to keep myself fed, much less pay off my debts. Please leave me to my work."

Speaking to him about his debts:

About your debts ….
"Oh, not this again. Look, run along and tell those flea-bitten cats that I'll have their coin as soon as possible. It isn't my fault that damned clever Farwen nicked it right out from under my nose!"
[Intimidate] Hand over what you have or I'll take it from your corpse. / [Intimidate] I don't have time for this. Give me whatever you do have or pay with your blood.
"Wha—oh, fine. I'd rather be hungry than dead. I never thought those Khajiit would resort to such tactics. Here, take it and be gone."
Farwen stole from you?
"Yes, yes. No need to rub it in. I don't know how she managed it, but she must be quite skilled. Too bad she doesn't understand what a mess she's landed me in now with the fat cat and his pets … er, I mean the majestic Bashshi-ra and his cohort."
I'll talk to her and get it back.
"You can try. I don't think it'll do any good. Right of Theft and all that."
Right of Theft?
"The act was artfully done, right in front of my eyes and yet I had no idea. By right, she owns my property until she makes a demand of me in return and I agree to her price for the return of what was stolen."
You're running out of options. I'll be back after I talk to Farwen.
"Oh, good. I look forward to our next meeting."

If you choose to speak with Farwen on his behalf, speaking to him again:

"If you want to talk to her, I won't stop you. She lives in the next house over."

If you intimidated him to give you the gold, speaking to him again:

"Go on then. I have nothing more to say about it. Run back to your kittens!"

When you speak to Farwen on the behalf of Manthir, the two will meet outside of their homes and the terms of the Right of Theft is honored:

Farwen: "Hello again, Manthir. Fine day this, don't you think?"
Manthir: "Yes, yes. Let's get on with it. Make your demand, Farwen."
Farwen: "Surely you know by now. I want us to be married. I will return the coin I stole in exchange."
Manthir: "I thought so as much. So I must marry you or be gutted by the fat cat's thugs. Oh, very well…."
Manthir: "I, Manthir, acknowledge that you Farwen rightfully stole my coin, and in exchange for its return, I agree to marry you."
Farwen: "I'm so happy you feel the same way!"

He will not be amused with this option, but agrees it's better than the other option:

"Well, I hope you're happy. What's the phrase? Out of the kettle and into Oblivion? Shackled for life to Farwen…"
It's better than being dead.
"I wouldn't overstate things. But here is the gold I owe. Take it back to those mangy cats and tell them I have no more need of their services. My ledger's clear, yeah?"
