Known for their skillful manipulations and mastery of the shadows, the fearsome Berne Clan have long served as a perpetual threat to the innocent mortals of Solstheim. Having migrated to the island after the destruction of their traditional lair of Galom Daeus in the Red Year, the Berne quickly established themselves as the undisputed rulers of Solstheim's lightless nights.

The current incarnation of the Berne began at the end of the Third Era. After the death of Clanlord Raxle Berne, the title of leader was claimed by both his niece, Restita, and his nephew, Aunius. The feud between the two lasted three years, ending when Restita ambushed and beheaded Aunius. Following the execution of all clan members who had sided with Aunius, Restita declared war on the rival Quarra clan, personally leading a raid on the Quarra lair of Druscashti, a raid that resulted in the deaths of many Quarra and the clan's flight to Solstheim with the Berne in pursuit.

Just when the Berne's victory seemed inevitable, the Red Year put an end to Restita's ambitions, destroying Galom Daeus and killing many Berne. The Quarra seized the opportunity to flee to Skyrim, and the Berne remained on Solstheim, creating a hidden lair somewhere on the island from which to plot future schemes.
