A History of Winterhold: First Edition

by Athkela Joneleth

From the pen of Belor Malus, transcriber first order:

Musing the first:

The origin of Winterhold is one that is lost to the ages, or so some lesser scholars may claim. I, however, believe that to a discerning eye - the truth is abundantly evident.

Common belief tells us that the all-powerful Arch-Mage, Shalidor of the First Era, created all that was Winterhold with but a single whisper of a spell, such was his power. However, even among the uniformed "learned" this account is considered largely apocryphal.

More colorful tales suggest Winterhold is a city from the end of time, sent back by the gods as a gift to those who came before. Unfortunately whichever god performed the translocation made a number of miscalculations, resulting in most of the city simply collapsing into the sea upon arrival.

Thus, Winterhold was ruined from the very start. Or, the very end, depending on how one perceives the flow of time and the machinations of beings divine. This origin however is also likely untrue.

So where lies the truth, one might ask? That is the very question I intend to answer in this, and subsequent volumes of "A History of Winterhold". And if you, dear reader, care to read, you too shall have the answer.

We begin at the start, as most things, but not all, often do...

Publishers appendix:-

It is with heavy heart I must inform you that Athkela Joneleth has passed. His works on "A History of Winterhold" and many other topics will sadly remain unfinished.

However, it is my hope that Joneleth's lifetime of literary musings will continue to inspire those within the field of theoretical historical hypothesizing.
