Tell Captain Vellius to send more heads and hafts in the next shipment. The timber in this valley is plentiful, but tough. We're down to our last good axe. There is still no sign of Private Gallien. I'm suspending the search; we simply can't spare the men. If the cold doesn't get him, the cats will. They'd be doing us a favor; that damned malingerer has been nothing but trouble since the surgeon discharged him.
