Level-dependent Damage?[edit]
I think this weapon does different damage depending on what level the player is when they find it. 128.54.152.141 10:43, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

- Player is level 42, armsman skill at 2/5 (40% bonus damage) with bladesman 1/3 and fighting stance dawnbreaker gets a base damage of 21. It would be nice if it was leveled but its likely the one handed perk. I will test this when I finish defeating mirak and redistribute points from one handed. Arcanearcher 13:35, Feb 15 2022
- This weapon will do the same damage at any level. The only thing that makes it do more damage is how high your One-Handed skill is (PS3, Xbox, PC approved) — Unsigned comment by 24.90.192.213 (talk) at 00:40 on January 16, 2012
- If you are doing more damage with this weapon, iti s most likely because you have taken the relative perks to increase damage with one-handed weapons — Unsigned comment by 205.188.117.6 (talk) at 06:51 on 30 November 2011
- Weapon damage will increase as your One-Handed skill increases or if you take perks that increase your damage with One-Handed weapons. Dawnbreaker itself is not scaled to the player's level. The only weapons that actually scale to the player's level are Skyforge weapons, and they do so dynamically. The introduction of smithing has made the necessity of level-dependent awards largely unnecessary. Kastagir 16:42, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Graphical Bug?[edit]
I've noticed on multiple, and somewhat frequent, occasions that Dawnbreaker will become blindingly bright if one performs a number of various actions. Said actions that have triggered this for me are fast traveling to an area that has enemies present, entering an interior zone that has enemies, equipping or removing equipment while in combat, and loading a save file made while in an outside location. I've narrowed it down as best as I can (being a console player) to being related to the effect attached to the weapon that causes it grow brighter when enemies are nearby. Nearly all actions that cause this graphical bug to occur involve proximity to enemies, the weapon can apparently detect enemies at a greater distance than some enemies can detect you as I discovered at Labyrinthian. It basically boils down to me wondering if anyone else has encountered this graphical bug as well as I have found no mention of it elsewhere so far, and to see if it is a universal bug or perhaps just a 360 console bug. --Xenoiaos 00:23, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- It glows nears enemies, how is this a bug? 108.28.34.65 19:39, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
- It glows near enemies, this is a fact that I've even tested myself. What I'm talking about is a bug that causes to glow with a blinding light far bright than it normally does around enemies, and thus makes it difficult to see anything on the side of the screen where you are holding it. --Xenoiaos 03:57, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
- On the other hand I have tested and found no correlation to the proximity of an enemy. I think the glow is controlled by the same factors that control the glow from spell effect you can see when equipping a spell for casting, nothing else, and is subject to the same bugs. -- Neondrmr 23:59, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
- It definitely glows really brightly at times, that's for sure. As for why, I have no idea...I was just now standing in the Palace of Kings and it started doing it, so something tells me it's at least partially random. I for one think it looks totally awesome and find such an effect appropriate for the sword of "cleansing light." I can see why some players might find it annoying though.

- I tried various things since I got it, including but not limited to:
-
- Using the sword during "Dawn's Hour".
- In proximity to undead including vampires, drauger, ghosts and skeletons.
- In proximity to agressive vs. non-agressive enemies.
- Necromancers
-
- but none seem to "deliberately" cause the glow. I have noticed that using a door to enter another part of a dungeon, sheathing and unsheathing multiple times, or un-equipping/equipping repeatedly does cause it to glow. Conclusion? Either it's supposed to glow ALL the time and it getting dim is the bug OR the increased glow is completely random. As for the obscene visibility altering brightness, I haven't come across it yet and hope I don't.75.71.114.55 22:48, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

(←) I've noticed that I tend to get an explosion when it's glowing, after the first hit against undead it loses it's glow but doesn't always explode. I think this is because the undead has to die in a time limit. 184.158.93.142 07:22, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
Buggy Breaker[edit]
often when attacking (non-undead) enemies they are set on fire, and when they die they leave an ash pile- this is not that strange but additionally it seems to have a chance to resurrect nearby NPCs under somebody else's control- for example if i kill X and Y, X will be burned and turned to ash but Y will come back to life, with the name X's Y. when that person is killed again, they do not ragdoll but simply stand still, searchable, but obviously not dead. strange occurrences! 86.140.165.37 10:36, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
- I has a fire damage enchant, all enemies set on fire. As for the dead turning to ash or becoming under others control ... Sorry if this is a stupid question but ... are you fighting necromancers? Kimi the Elf 19:59, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
I somehow got two of these.[edit]
Somehow got two Dawnbreakers. After I defeated the shades, there was one on the ground, and I picked it up. Then it told me to interact with the pedestal, and I got another one. I'm able to use them both at the same time. — Unsigned comment by 174.114.60.201 (talk) at 20:53 on 4 December 2011
- This is a known bug in the Break of Dawn quest. Depending on how and when you kill Malkoran, he might drop a copy the sword when he dies. But there will always be a copy of the sword on the pedestal, so you can end up with two. Phaid 16:19, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
- He doesn't drop a copy. If you cast and area destruction spell at the sword it can knock it loose but the/a sword will stay on the pedestal as part of the script. 108.28.34.65 19:36, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
- I just did this and didn't use any magic, and killed him before he could use any magic. His corpse was by the doorway of the room and right beside it was a second copy of the sword. I don't think the sword can be found on or near his body. I found it after casting Bane of the Undead near the sword pedestal, picking up the sword that came out, and then activating the pedestal.64.135.48.170 17:28, 6 May 2013 (GMT)
Reference Bug (Or Glitch?)[edit]
I seem to have run into a bug (or is it a glitch?) where Guards and other NPCs will say "Hey, watch the fire!" (The in-game acknowledgement to the sword) even when I don't have the sword at all. They didn't start saying it until I got Dawnbreaker, and now that I've had it, they make that mention. This is normal when I have it equipped, however it's been sitting in a chest for some time now in my house and every time I go past someone while using any spell in hand or wielding any enchanted weapon, doesn't matter what the spell or weapon is, they say it. I was wondering what it was a reference to. Now I know. To give an example, I've walked around with a weapon that as Frost damage on it and they say that, I've had staves and they say it, and I've even Transmuted in front of Guards and NPCs and they say it. Even Restoration Spells, as long as they are "readied" in my hands or my weapons are drawn, they say it. Not with Bows though, oddly enough. 50.103.46.55 12:24 AM 27 Dec, 2011 (CST).
- There's no guard phrase triggered by having Dawnbreaker. There's also no guard phrase -- or dialogue from any NPC for that matter -- containing the phrase "watch the fire". The closest phrase I can see is "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Watch the magic!", which is a generic phrase guards will say any time you're casting a spell. --NepheleTalk 06:37, 27 December 2011 (UTC)
- Actually, if you walk around with a fire spell or anything that has a fire enchantment they say something like "watch the fire" Zambam 17:15, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Model changes[edit]
I have noticed a bug where dawn breaker will look like an ordinary ebony sword when drawn after opening saves and fast traveling. I'm not sure, but this may be due to the fact that I have improved the sword at a grind stone to exquisite level. Unequipping and re-equipping fixes this. — Unsigned comment by 209.155.86.130 (talk) at 22:12 on 2 January 2012

Stops Dragon Soul Absorbtion?[edit]
Using Dawnbreaker to kill a dragon seems to prevent the release of the dragon's soul. The dead dragon's flesh stays fleshy rather than burning off, and no soul is absorbed. It can still be looted.
I'm playing on an Xbox and tested several times. Killing them by either magick or other swords yielded the expected behavior but 3 out of 3 deliberate uses of Dawnbreaker caused the faulty behavior(not to mention a few prior WTF moments before I figured this out).
Would some additional players please confirm or deny if my experience is unique? -- Neondrmr 22:58, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Floaty Glitch?[edit]
After getting the Dawnbreaker from the pedistal i was transported into the atmosphere for what i assumed was a chat with a deadric princess, however once up there all i could do was walk around a small area of the sky. The light/ball thingy that she talks to you the first time was there but it was a little above and cant be interacted with. I loaded a save right before you kill the necromancer and tried again with the same result.. Is this a fixable error or am i screwed out of an awesome sword? 50.65.0.188 01:50, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
Brighter glow near draugr?[edit]
Is there really a brighter glow when near draugr? Is it stated to be as such in a guidebook or something? I have tested this and have seen no noticeable change in the brightness of the light in the hilt. I also tried to dissect it in NIFSkope, but the various anim controllers are kinda difficult to discern what does what. --MadCat221 16:56, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Two Dawnbreakers on 1.4[edit]
I have found it is still possible to acquire two Dawnbreakers after the 1.4 update on the ps3 version despite what the article says. I have done this twice now. I didn't want to edit the article as I am new to editing and I think it should be confirmed by others first. --YetiWithFlamethrower 05:15, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

- I've removed the "fixed" note, as I see no evidence that this has been fixed by 1.4 in the Patch notes. Looking at the quest code, it looks to me like one will always spawn on Malkoran the moment the quest starts, and the player is given one as well at Quest Stage 450. There are a lot of complexities that I don't fully understand yet in the Creation Kit, though, so take my interpretation with a grain of salt at this point. – Robin Hood↝talk 22:57, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

- Yes. After I posted that, I thought about it and realized that the problem it was talking about related to the quest, not the sword itself, so it belonged on the quest page. I can see an argument that duplicate swords might belong on both pages, but at least to me, I think of that as primarily being a quest issue. If you feel it belongs here as well, go ahead and reinstate it. – Robin Hood↝talk 23:50, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Meridia's Retribution[edit]
I've noticed that undead affected by the turn undead part of this are more likely to explode and cause a "bane of the undead" like effect than the ones that have not already been affected? Can anyone confirm this? Im on an unpatched xbox if it matters. Theskyrimnerd 23:16, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
Dawnbreaker disappeared from inventory[edit]
I had this happen to me in Bleak Falls Barrow. Reloading a save didn't prevent it from happening, although I did not try re-doing it with the sword NOT equipped. It seemed to happen when entering the final area, where the shout wall and the Dragonstone is. A bit of a nasty bug. I'd recommend not equipping this sword when doing the quest relating to the Dragonstone, to avoid anyone else potentially losing it. It's a big loss to a low level character such as myself. — Unsigned comment by 2.26.161.208 (talk) on 16 March 2012

Used with Soul Trap[edit]
When you equip Dawnbreaker in the right hand and the spell Soul Trap in the left, cast Soul Trap on a draugr, and then kill it with Dawnbreaker, the area-clearing explosion seems to happen much more reliably, perhaps as much as 100% of the time. 174.6.51.17 01:41, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
Glitch when dying[edit]
I am playing on the x box 360 version and I have experienced a strange glitch with dawnbreaker several times , where after I get killed while equipped with dawnbreaker, I find a second copy of dawnbreaker lying on the ground , and I am unable to interact with this glitched copy of dawnbreaker. Therefore, its upgrades do not benefit from any smithing perks, and can only be tempered to Flawless quality without a Fortify Smithing effect."
Dawnbreaker must be bugged![edit]
So this is the second incidence being recorded of someone, myself, losing their Dawnbreaker mid-battle of the endboss to a quest. Herein I was fighting Olaf One-Eye and he was not very difficult. As my dawnbreaker broke his face, about 3/4 of the way through killing him, the Dawnbreaker became a Glass Sword of Fire.
Also, at this time my shield unequipped. My Dawnbreaker was not in my inventory but now a glass sword of fire is, and my shield is just fine. Be careful with the Dawn Breaker. I miss it already. — Unsigned comment by 24.44.132.81 (talk) at 05:00 on 21 February 2013

- Isn't 'Olaf One-Eye' capable of using the disarm shout, you probably got Dawnbreaker disarmed off you and you didn't notice, don't know about the Glass Sword though. — Unsigned comment by 124.43.204.113 (talk) at 10:49 on 3 June 2013
- That would be my guess. Sometimes if you have another similar weapon in your inventory, or a weapon you have previously equipped, it'll automatically switch if you lose the one you're currently carrying. Disarm stops working on you once you hit level 30, but I've seen the same thing when placing my equipped weapon in a container; it'll sometimes equip another weapon I'm carrying, either going for a bow or even a two hander instead of a 1h. - That's a bummer, man. Plenty of experimenting you could do to try and salvage something, though. Clear your cache, and try each save you got in reverse chronological order. Please watch your language on the UESP.
- If you're really desperate, I've had luck with memory maintenance. Get rid of stuff you don't need on your hard drive, especially large items. Then delete your Skyrim DLC and/or installed game and and redownload it all. This will take all night, of course, but if you really want to save that power leveling session ... Physical Appearance Glitch (Ps3)[edit]
The Dawnbreaker turned into the looks of a light saber with a bright yellowish white color taking over the texture to the blade, glowing appearances remained the same. Unequipping and reequipping the weapon did not work, fast travel or changing a cell reverted back to normal over time. BlackOp (talk) 06:00, 23 March 2013 (GMT)
Light Effect Glitch (PS3)[edit]
The dawnbreaker randomly glows so bright. The handle is bright orange and the blade itself like a light saber. This is definitely a glitch in the appearance and only changes back to the original cool look after a while or something random is done e.g. fast travel, equip/unequip, switch between 1st and 3rd person view. — Unsigned comment by 49.144.223.127 (talk) at 22:05 on 31 May 2013
- I wrote the article above this post. After playing around with this weapon (because I really can't decide whether to choose this or DG rune axe), I found that the sword lighting up blindly is a random occurrence but mostly happens after fast travelling OR entering/leaving a room where the lighting in the current area is different from the previous one. TO FIX THIS, I found a temporary workaround: You can assign the weapon to the shortcut menu and as soon as the glitch appears, UNEQUIP AND EQUIP the weapon immediately to lose the bugged appearance(like a friggin light saber!!!) This is tested on PS3 and has worked so far. I hope Bethesda will be able to address this issue soon. Hope this helps! Thanks! — Unsigned comment by 49.144.223.127 (talk) at 11:12 on 1 June 2013
Has the duplication bug been fixed?[edit]
I thought it'd be neat to be able to use Dawnbreaker and still have one hanging on a weapon plaque, so I looked up how to do the duplication glitch and tried multiple times (reloading more than once) to knock it off its pedestal. I tried using fireball, fire rune, and a scroll of mass paralysis. But I could never find the duplicated sword anywhere in the room. I can't help but think that a recent patch may have fixed it. keeping duplicated copy when installing expansion packs[edit]
will my duplicated dawnbreaker get removed from the game when I install the dawnguard and hearthfire updates?

- I'd hazard a guess that you would keep it. There's no reason for it to scan every container in the game to see if there are two dawnbreakers in existence. Xolroc (talk) 03:14, 19 October 2013 (GMT)
Witch School of Magic affects Dawnbreaker's enchantment? Is it Destruction? Or Restoration?[edit]
I'm trying to build a character that could use Dawnbreaker's enchantment indefinitely by having 100% cost reduction of spell, but the nature of the sword's enchantment confuses me, is it really possible? If so, which School of Magic works? I'm guessing between Destruction and Restoration, but I really don't know — Unsigned comment by 114.125.171.137 (talk) at 04:50 on 22 October 2015
- As both effects of dawnbreaker are governed by destruction, it likely is destruction -- SarthesArai Talk 14:49, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
Explosion Bug[edit]
While using Dawnbreaker during Awakening, the explosion triggered against the vampire after the lever gate in Dimhollow Crypt. This caused the Frostbite Spider next to him to be reduced to an ash pile. Is this a bug or is the description of the blast only affecting undead wrong? Has anyone else seen this? Gglazer (talk) 00:07, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
- I've seen necromancers reanimate Frostbite Spiders, and vampires are often spellcasters, so it's possible that the spider had been killed (or was placed as dead) and reanimated by a vampire. --FoolishOwl (talk) 23:08, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
Dawnbreaker issue[edit]
I don't know if it's a core bug or not, but Dawnbreaker can be sold to a mage vendor, like Farengar, who does not normally buy standard weapons of any type, just staves. 142.167.149.224 06:20, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
Unofficial Patch fixed Dawnbreakers tempering issues[edit]
I couldn't find which version fixed it but I cracked open the patch in CK and they gave it the daedric weapon material so now it can be tempered properly. If anyone can find which patch number fixed it then feel free to add it to the page.
