Daggerfall books[edit]

Book book
Spellbook
Oghma Infinium
Holy Tome

Atypical book items:

All normal books use the same icon. All have weight of 2.00kg. Value varies.

Book data is stored in arena2\books\BOK#####.TXT. No official patches change them but the GOG release removes one.

There are some weird things hidden in the book headers (solving their mysteries is probably beyond me):

  • 15 books have the word "naughty" hidden in their header. That sounds like it's meant to mark them to not appear with ChildGuard on, but in my testing that doesn't happen.
  • There's a number called "Price" in Daggerfall Mod:Book format but I can't see any obvious relationship between it and the reported value in-game.
    • When I deleted a BOK file and then loaded a character who was carrying that book, the item name would no longer appear but the correct value remained! Value doesn't appear to come from the header, but maybe this "price" value affects buy/sell calculations somehow?
    • The vast majority of books have the same "price" and the other values appear only near the beginning and at the start of the King Edward block. It feels like something they were customising to begin with but then abandoned.
  • There's a number called "Rarity" in Daggerfall Mod:Book format but in my testing I never noticed, for example, Real Barenziah 3 being more common/rare than the others.
    • Maybe it affects merchant calculations. Or maybe it only has a subtle effect. Or maybe it has something to do with which books are used as quest items. Or maybe it does nothing.

Daggerfall faction chart[edit]

I don't know if this has any value but I felt like visualising faction.txt with a chart. WIP.

Arena patch notes[edit]

1[edit]

The Elder Scrolls: Arena
Patch 01

This zip file contains this readme file, a new executable and two
image files. The alterations to the game are as follows:

* The F4 key now toggles message pixellation. If you would prefer
messages to pop on to the screen rather than pixellate in, click
the F4 key. Clicking the key again will toggle the messages back to
pixellation.

* Due to popular demand, spellcasters can now delete spells from
their spellbooks. Simply go to the second page of your character
sheet, click on spellbook, double-click on the spell you wish to
delete, and when the spell description appears choose the new
"delete" option.

* Also due to popular demand, it is now possible to sell most all
magic items in equipment stores, including torcs, crystals, rings,
and bracelets.

* Mouse movement has been improved.

* It is now possible to lower the detail level even more for
slower machines.

* The F3 key now toggles damage response. There are three choices
available: "Normal Roll", "Severe Roll", and "Cross Hatch". This is
in response to the "Quadrant Jerk" complaint.

* Reported problems with negotiation, character inventory,
and other minor glitches have also been fixed.

We appreciate all the comments we have received so far. Hope you
enjoy exploring the world of the Arena, and keep us informed about what you
do and do not like.

2[edit]

Patch #2

This patch will fix the following:

-Knights repair at 10x their level instead of 3x their level for items.

-Random encounters in city at night have been reduced a bit.

-Automapping in the interior (it used to garble up) has been fixed.

-People who saved games in interiors experienced problems when exiting
the interior in patch #1. This has been remedied.
Note: If you are one of these people, you will not get any music until
you exit the interior or climb up or down a level inside. This
is not a bug. The system needs to reread a file.

-To aid us in tracking bugs, a version number will be displayed when
exiting the game. Please take note of it. The most current version is 1.02.

-The standing long jump (shift+j) has been fixed.

A number of miscellaneous 'fixes' have also been done to file management.

3[edit]

Note: Arena patch #3 replaces #1 and #2 - you will not need to load them
first.
