Welcome[edit]

Hello HMSVictory! Welcome to the wiki. I hope you enjoy using the site and find the information on it useful. If you decide you want to help improve any of our pages, we're always welcoming to new editors (as long as they can refrain from adding the word "BAH" at random!) so feel free. You might want to look at our Getting Started page for some tips on how to begin, then play in our Sandbox for a while to practice. If you need any help or advice, please ask one of our mentors. Enjoy!

Just as a matter of interest, was there a particular reason you chose my page for your initial, anonymous edit? Do I know you? --RpehTCE 15:45, 2 November 2007 (EDT)

I had taken note of your interesting ideals and your exceptional editing profile. Your contributions have been many and valuable, so this was the final test to reward you with a Cookie (Which I have done). Enjoy!

Userbox tag...[edit]

Just letting you know that the Userbox doesn't work if you leave all the <code><nowiki> tags around it. Those are just used to display the code on the page without making a Userbox appear there. --TheRealLurlock Talk 15:51, 2 November 2007 (EDT)

Damn, just found that out. Quickley fixed though!

Placing Userboxes and Using Preview[edit]

Oookay - The Recent Changes page is going wild with edits to your user page. You might like to investigate a) The "Show preview" button, which will let you see what effect your changes will have and b) The {{NewLeft}}, {{NewRight}} and {{NewLine}} templates - they'll let you place things without relying on <br> tags. Also feel free to borrow layout code such as I use on my user page if it helps. --RpehTCE 16:24, 2 November 2007 (EDT)

Point taken, although I am not entirely sure how to use the scripting that is on your page. I went onto edit and my screen was flooded with unintelligable scripting and data. I will try and keep my page simple for now.
Scripting? There are some tables on there but that's about it. If you need help with tables (and everybody does at first!) there's a good tutorial here. --RpehTCE 16:50, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
How Does One use the "NewLine", "NewLeft" and "NewRight" templates. I added some and they did not seem to make any difference, so I deleted them. I can guess what they do, but not where to put them and so forth.
The NewLine, etc. templates are used to position subsequent text after any "floating" boxes, such as images. In other words, if normally text appears next to an image and you want it to instead appear below the image, use one of these templates. NewLine forces the text to appear after all images; NewLeft forces the text to appear only after any images on the left side of the page, but still allows the text to be adjacent to images on the right side of the page (if you have images on both sides of the page); vice versa for NewRight. --NepheleTalk 11:29, 4 November 2007 (EST)
Thank You, I now understand.

Skooma Sucker!![edit]

Green Tea.jpg
You have been given a cup of green tea!

Your dedication and diligence to the wiki has not gone unnoticed. A user has seen the progress you've made, and has given you a cup of Green Tea because of it. Good work! The user had the following to say:

Great job with helping improve the skooma page, continue your pence. --Western3589 15:19, 6 November 2007 (EST)

Well, I had no idea I would recieve any awards this early in my experience as a member of the UESPWiki. Thank you, Western3589, even though I obviously don't deserve it. I mean, what good have I ever done around here?

Morrowind NPC pages[edit]

I noticed that you stated in your goals your intention to create NPC pages for every NPC in Morrowind. I just wanted to let you in on what the plans are for this. Unlike Oblivion, Morrowind has lots and lots of Non-Relevant NPCs. Every bandit and smuggler in every cave and ruin in the game has a name, even if they are completely un-important. Therefore, the plan is that while every NPC will have a page, the majority of them will just be redirects to the location page where they are found. The only NPCs who will receive full description pages are relevant ones. (See What is Relevant? for some criteria on who qualifies as relevant.) Even this is a fairly large job, but compared to the 3000+ pages that would be needed to cover EVERYone, it's far more manageable. As far as creating the redirects, this job will most likely be done by a bot, so there is no need to create them manually. Let me know if you would like to help on any aspect of creating NPC pages for the relevant NPCs. --TheRealLurlock Talk 15:36, 7 November 2007 (EST)

Hi There![edit]

I just happened to see your name on the "Recent Changes" page and thought I'd stop by to say you've got a great username. =) I really enjoy naval history, especially Britain's, from 1588-1815 and my handle on another forum is actually "AdmiralNelson," so I imagine you can figure out why I like it. Anyway, have a good one! =) IWon'tFightUndead 16:10, 9 November 2007 (EST)

Userbox image[edit]

To shrink that down, just add a "|45px" into the image declaration, e.g.:

OB-icon-Intelligence (title).gif This user does not contribute by using a web browser. Rather, he uploads material directly to the internet by using the awesome power of his mind.

--TheRealLurlock Talk 13:06, 13 November 2007 (EST)

Thank you! I knew it could be done, but I wasn't sure how. It must be really degrading for you to have to answer such a simple, stupid question. (HMSVictory 13:14, 13 November 2007 (EST))

Nah, no problem. I'm kind of the go-to guy for Userboxes anyhow, since I created most of them. Thus whenever you put the word "Userbox" in an edit-summary, I'll probably show up... --TheRealLurlock Talk 13:26, 13 November 2007 (EST)
Thanks again, it's just that because there are fewer administrators here than in Wikipedia, they seem all the more powerful and intimidating. And plus the administrators over here always have a faint smell of cookies for some reason... (HMSVictory 14:02, 13 November 2007 (EST))
I'd like to think that we seem more hands-on and personable, while Wikipedia admins tend to be cold and distant, but that's just me, maybe... --TheRealLurlock Talk 14:07, 13 November 2007 (EST)
Well, the trouble with Wikipedia is that there are so many users that it's impossible to find any of them! They have so many administrators that they took down the category for them at one point because it was so long! I think they have brought it back with alphabetical sub-sections. (HMSVictory 13:09, 14 November 2007 (EST))

Thanks![edit]

Thank you for the cookie and the words of confidence. This kind of messages are what give me strength to continue improving the site. I have also seen you have made a good start in the site, so keep up the good work! --DrPhoton 03:05, 23 November 2007 (EST)

External Links[edit]

Yes, they're quite fun. I've taken it off the Argonian page though, because I think it's a bit... frivolous... for a main article page. --RpehTCE 07:53, 24 November 2007 (EST)

Good point. I guess I was on a whim at the time. Anyway, you guys know best, so I won't bother arguing! --HMSVictory 07:59, 24 November 2007 (EST)
If you are worried they may be considered spam, there is a good guideline here. You may also see Wikipedia:Spam for more info on this. --Mankar CamoranTCE 09:49, 24 November 2007 (EST)
Well, they don't actually link to any profit pages or banners, so they should be fine. I certainly haven't put them there for personal gain. --HMSVictory 09:52, 24 November 2007 (EST)
That's what I was thinking as well. I think it will be fine as long as it is not some sort of an advertisement. --Mankar CamoranTCE 09:59, 24 November 2007 (EST)
I've certainly nothing to advertise, escept maybe this Wiki! Just kidding. I like the argonian facial one though. Very cleverly done. --HMSVictory 10:01, 24 November 2007 (EST)
I liked it too. It's quite funny actually :). --Mankar CamoranTCE 10:09, 24 November 2007 (EST)
I please to aim (At that Daedra's head)! --HMSVictory 10:10, 24 November 2007 (EST)

Also, I think advertisement has a commercial ring to it. It looks as if it's fine as long as it's not commercial. --Mankar CamoranTCE 10:14, 24 November 2007 (EST)

Well YTMND (You're The Man Now, Dowg) is all about hosting amusing single-page sites. In fact, if you click on the tag on the top-left, you will see a list of some other fun TES pages. As far as I know, there are no banners or anything like that on the website. And besides, I'm too passionate about this Wiki to even think about vandalising it! --HMSVictory 10:18, 24 November 2007 (EST)
I hadn't even considered that these might be spam. It's not written down anywhere but I'd say a general rule is that anything is linkable off user pages (with some exceptions) or talk pages, but that external links off articles should clearly benefit the topic and be reliable sources. --RpehTCE 10:26, 24 November 2007 (EST)
Well, I really don't think that either of them are spam. I just though that other users who have played Morrowind and its expansions would find them funny. I hope we can come to some sort of conclusion with these and the other links on my pages. --HMSVictory 10:29, 24 November 2007 (EST)
I've been trying to say they're fine! --RpehTCE 10:36, 24 November 2007 (EST)
You two might also want to check out some of my Userboxes. As you can see, I have a very odd sense of humour. Better to laugh with an enemy than laugh at a friend! (Not that any of you are my enemies) --HMSVictory 10:41, 24 November 2007 (EST)
Hey, I've just been on the Special:UsersEditCount page, and I have noticed that all of the users with similar edit counts to mine have very short or uninteresting pages. Any reason why mine is so expansive in comparison? By the way, Rpeh, if there were Barnstars here like in Wikipedia, I would give you the one for the best Userpage! --HMSVictory 10:52, 24 November 2007 (EST)
I am absolutely sure yours are not spam. And I have liked your sense of humour ever since you arrived with a "bah" on Rpeh's page! I really like your "mind userbox". --Mankar CamoranTCE 11:06, 24 November 2007 (EST)
Well, Thanks! I see we have plenty of friendly users already, but it never hurts to be funny, light-hearted or just plain nice to other users. *Sniff *Sniff* - Do I smell cookies...? --HMSVictory 11:14, 24 November 2007 (EST)

(outdent) Re User pages: Some people do and some don't. The Most Active User has made fewer than 20 changes to his page this year; I've made nearly 50. I like to keep mine fairly up to date (and it needs an update or three at the moment); others see the whole thing as a distraction. Basically, there's no "right" or "wrong" on this! Thank you for your comments about my page but it's only pretty because of the two graphics. I keep meaning to give it a proper face-lift but keep getting distracted. Lastly, we don't do Barnstars, preferring to reward people with a range of tasty treats instead!

Well, I do think that being given a piece of cheese (I love cheese) is in so many ways better than a Barnstar, except that there aren't any topic-specific awards! And plus, I really wouldn't like to bite into a Golden Penny Racer! Where did the idea for those come from anyway? --HMSVictory 11:24, 24 November 2007 (EST)
The main idea came from Aristeo, then Hoggwild5 added a few variants (Cheese for rats, for example). Eshe created a template for an award designed by Booyah boy and Playjex added the penny racer. But I imagine the whole thing was a variant of WP's Barnstars. If you want to create your own, feel free! --RpehTCE 12:12, 24 November 2007 (EST)
Well, I do have some ideas, but I wouldn't know how to create one, how to implement one or if anyone would pay any attention to my stupid ideas. --HMSVictory 12:39, 24 November 2007 (EST)
First, there are very few stupid ideas. Giving out virtual cookies or lumps of cheese could be considered stupid but I remember how proud I was when I got my first cookie so it works no matter how stupid it sounds in concept. Second, you may be a fairly new user but you've made dozens of well-researched, helpful edits and so why wouldn't I listen to your ideas? You've made a big impact on the site already and I hope it continues. Just keep up the good work! --RpehTCE 13:27, 24 November 2007 (EST)
I just saw your Adoring Fan link. It's extremely funny! And I agree with Rpeh. You definitely have been very helpful. --Mankar CamoranTCE 13:42, 24 November 2007 (EST)
Wow, thanks guys. I'm not used to praise like that. I may be a positive editor, but still, I'm not even a very high-ranking user, so what major impact could I have, especially concerning a new award template? Anyway, there is no room for mistakes on a Wiki, and mistake is my middle name. --HMSVictory 14:00, 24 November 2007 (EST)
The award templates are completely informal, pretty much all of them designed on a whim by whoever felt like doing it. There's no commitee for voting on new awards templates or anything like that. If you want to make one, all you have to do is copy one of the existing ones and make whatever changes you want. Find an apporpriate (hopefully free-license) image, and swap it in there, with the appropriate text and category changes and you're done. You could also do other stuff like change the colors, line-width, etc., but that's all up to you. There's no rules for this (other than the general rules that apply to the whole site, of course), so go wild with it. Have some fun. You can also ask myself or any of the more experienced editors for help if you have any questions. --TheRealLurlock Talk 15:06, 24 November 2007 (EST)

(Outdent) Well, I certainly enjoy being creative and customising things, but I really don't think that I would be able to. I mean, look how far down I am on the list of Active Users! Anyway, all I ask of you, TheRealLurlock, is to give me your opinion on my userboxes and my Elder Scrolls Links section. I think a new award is out of my spectrum. --HMSVictory 04:46, 25 November 2007 (EST)

Glitches[edit]

I just saw your new guard link. You can submit your proposal at Oblivion:Glitches/Proposed. I just thought I'd let you know, in case you didn't know. --Mankar CamoranTCE 08:35, 25 November 2007 (EST)

Alright, I've posted it. It's actually rather funny to see, but anyway, that's just me and my insane designs. --HMSVictory 13:47, 25 November 2007 (EST)

You Are Very Helpful[edit]

Please don't have such a low opinion of yourself, HMSVictory. You know the old saying - Be Positive. Negative thinking will not get you anywhere. I have noticed you making some really good contributions. Every constructive edit is a help and you have made so many of them. That means you have been very helpful. You obviously know a lot about Morrowind, so keep up the good work! Also, Rpeh has actually praised you for being a great editor. --Mankar CamoranTCE 12:02, 26 November 2007 (EST)

Yes, but what is a great editor? Personally, I don't think I fit the description. I am plain mediocre, that's all. --HMSVictory 12:13, 26 November 2007 (EST)

Widescreen[edit]

In my ever-persistent need to be correct, I noticed that you consider your monitor to be wide, yet, I do believe 1280x1024 is considered a normal-sized screen (though a bit wider than 640x480 ratio). Also, I've seen your good work on the wiki and wanted to say, "Keep it up (or else)". --Timmeh 18:35, 28 November 2007 (EST)

Hmm... I probably have my numbers wrong. I am certain that my screen is widescreen, I just need to check out my resolution. --HMSVictory 11:20, 29 November 2007 (EST)
Mine is 1440x900 and it is widescreen. You seem to have gotten your numbers wrong. Actually the standard dimension is 1280x960, I think. --Mankar CamoranTCE 11:51, 29 November 2007 (EST)
Well, the aspect ratio is definately 16:9, I've checked that. I think it may be 1280x960, or 1440x900. ---------------------- Yes it is the latter, just had a look, I'll correct that now. --HMSVictory 11:30, 30 November 2007 (EST)

Advice and Congratulations[edit]

Congratulations on making the top 50! The best piece of advice I can give you is to suggest you start keeping an eye on the Recent Changes page if you're not already doing so. Rather than have me tell you what I think is the best way to make your edits, take a look at what gets approved, what gets reverted and what gets tweaked. It's also a good way of finding out about some of the less well-known and accessible areas of the site. That page is what Patrollers use to approve the changes on the site and evidence that somebody is using the page is usually looked for when approving new patrollers, so it's good practice for that too. (And no I'm not trying to force you into anything!) Otherwise, keep up the good work.

Since you've been largely concentrating on Morrowind, you might want to look at joining the Morrowind Redesign Project and getting advice from Lurlock and the others on what you can do there. Otherwise, keep doing what you've been doing! --RpehTCE 15:13, 30 November 2007 (EST)

Thanks Rpeh! I have applied for the project on Lurlocks talk page, as I could see no applications section on the project page or its talk page. I hope to reach a higher rank in the site soon, so please keep a watch of my edits (Not that you don't already have enough to be getting on with!). I have enjoyed my experience here so far, even though it has been a short one, and I have reached my goal of hitting the top 50 within a month! YAY. --HMSVictory 15:23, 30 November 2007 (EST)
May I opine on this? HMSVictory, for a ship named for success, you seem to be really down on yourself. You are not "mediocre." You are decent, if not ouright good at editing. Better than I started out as. Okay? So chin up! Wikipedia says to "be bold." I know we don't share all their policies, but that one? Yes! Just join up for the Redesign Projects. We don't turn folks down! Somercy 15:29, 30 November 2007 (EST)
I want to comment too. You are a great editor, and will become better. There is no such thing as a "bad editor" or something like that. So please ditch the negative/modest attitude, because studies have shown that positive attidutes are a lot more productive, and get more satisfaction from their work. Besides, everyone here started from scratch. Even the admins (though it does seem that they have been here forever, but I just joined in June, so I can't say for sure). In a while you might be the one tutoring the newer editors. If a 13 year old can become a patroller and mentor (it's got to be embarrassing to be tutored by someone many years younger than you...) in several months, surely you will be able to do it in half the effort. Congrats on making top 50! Vesna 20:54, 30 November 2007 (EST)
Thank you all, but really, don't worry about my opinion of myself. I just hope I make the Morrowind Redesign Project. I also really don't think I would make a good mentor, administartor or patroller; it's just not my focus. I may have vast knowledge of the games themselves, but my expertise on Wiki syntax and formatting leaves much to be desired. --HMSVictory 04:13, 1 December 2007 (EST)
