Quick Walkthrough[edit]
- Befriend the Jarl of Riften by dealing with the Skooma trade.
- Complete three miscellaneous quests in Riften.
- Purchase Honeyside.
- Return to the Jarl for your reward.
Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
This is an umbrella quest for several other quests that must be completed if you wish to become Thane of the Rift. The Jarl requires you to buy the house in town as well as completing a number of miscellaneous quests. Once this is achieved you can become Thane.
In order to receive this quest you must first aid the current jarl, Laila Law-Giver or Maven Black-Briar, by dealing with the skooma trade in Riften. This involves completing the quests Helping Hand, The Raid, and Supply and Demand.
Unlike in other holds, you must then complete three other Miscellaneous Quests in Riften, rather than completing five Favor Quests across the hold. Completion of miscellaneous quests in other Rift settlements does not count. Note that many of the quest givers are non-essential NPCs, so their deaths would result in a loss of potential quests to complete. If they die after you assist them, they still count towards your Thane status. Investing in Rift stores does not count for this Thaneship quest either.
You must also purchase Honeyside, which costs at least 5,000 gold (see bugs). Simply purchasing it is enough, there is no requirement to decorate, although it becomes more useful if decorated.

Reward[edit]
After completing the necessary quests and purchasing Honeyside, the journal tells you to return to the jarl. The reward, the Blade of the Rift, is a random, leveled, enchanted weapon. Despite its name, it can be nearly any weapon, including a non-bladed weapon like a Mace. There is a 50% chance that it will be one-handed and a 50% chance that it will be two-handed. You will also receive a housecarl named Iona, who will be waiting for you at Honeyside.
Notes[edit]
- Unlike every other Thane quest, the "Assist the people of <Hold>" part does not appear in the journal, and must be completed before the Jarl will make you the offer. A new quest "Speak to the Jarl of Riften" will appear under Miscellaneous when you have completed enough miscellaneous objectives.
- The quests which gain the favor of the jarl—Helping Hand, The Raid and Supply and Demand—are required tasks to complete before becoming named Thane of the Rift even if the Empire takes Riften, although you will be allowed to buy Honeyside immediately.
- The guest bedroom in Honeyside will also be decorated at the end of this quest.
Bugs[edit]
- "The Blade of the Rift" is never actually given as a reward: instead, you will receive a generic un-renamed enchanted weapon.
- The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 1.2, fixes this bug.
- The reward you receive is generated randomly at the beginning of the game, so will always be iron.
- The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 1.2, fixes this bug.
- Visiting Honeyside for the first time before becoming named Thane of Riften may prevent you from ever being able to be named Thane of Riften. After purchasing the house, immediately speak with the Jarl to avoid this bug.
- The Official Skyrim Patch, version 1.4, fixes this bug.
- It is possible that the dialogue with the Jarl will not start, no matter how many people you've helped.
- Sometimes the "Speak to the Jarl of Riften" step gets stuck in the miscellaneous section of the journal.
- If you have fully completed this quest and the Jarl changes during the civil war, you are unable to become thane again. ?

- The following empty quest stages were omitted from the table: 200.
- Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g.,
<Alias=LocationHold>
) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game. - Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
