The Administrator Noticeboard is where we discuss and coordinate administrative tasks on the wiki. Although this page is intended for administrators, all users are encouraged to participate in discussions.

Before starting a discussion here, please review the other community pages below, as your question or suggestion may be more appropriate on another page.

Other pages for community-wide or general questions include:

  • Policies and Guidelines — A list of policies and guidelines, which each have individual pages; their talk pages are the best place to discuss these policies (see the Community Portal's Active Discussions for links to active policy discussions).
  • Community Portal — The main discussion forum used for community-wide discussions about UESP's operations, policies, design, and improvement.
  • Deletion Review — An area to discuss controversial page deletions and reach a consensus.
  • Reference Desk — This is the best place for general questions about The Elder Scrolls games and lore.

Specific requests and notifications can be made on these pages:

  • Account Pseudonymization Requests — For removing personal details and blocking further access to your own account.
  • Block Notifications — For blockers to record their blocks, notifying administrators to potentially take further action on them.
  • Bot Requests — This page can be used to request that one of the wiki's bots take on a task.
  • Creation Kit Information Requests — You can request specific Creation Kit information for articles here.
  • Image Requests — You can request specific images for articles here.
  • New Page Requests — You can request a new page here if you were prevented from creating the page yourself.
  • Purge Requests — If you are having problems viewing an article on UESP, the page may need to be purged. New purge requests can be made here.

Past discussions from the Administrator Noticeboard can be found at:

  • AN Archives — Lists all of the past discussions from the Administrator Noticeboard, including major discussions, chronological archives, and previous requests for administrator, bureaucrat, or server access.

Nominations to become a patroller or autopatrolled user, requests for userspace patroller or blocker rights, and proposals for new bots should be held on their respective pages. Requests for interface editor, adminship, or any other user group rights should be posted here.

MediaWiki Upgrade to 1.28[edit]

The wiki upgrade to 1.28 is tentatively scheduled for this Wednesday, 9 Feb 2021 sometime in the morning EST. The dev wiki has been running 1.28 for a few months now for testing. Look for more updates here and on Discord. -- Daveh (talk) 20:33, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

I've just gone over the list of changes between 1.27 and 1.28 and virtually everything is internal, so I don't expect users to notice much difference between the two. That said, MediaWiki's fond of deprecating/removing things, so I suspect we'll have the usual round of tools that break because they were using some really old code. Overall, though, I expect this one to go more smoothly than many of our other upgrades (he said, completely jinxing it). Robin Hood(talk) 23:53, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Upgrade[edit]

  • Stopping Job Runner -- We have to upgrade ElasticSearch for this upgrade so I'm stopping the job runner until that is completed. -- Daveh (talk) 14:19, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
  • Database Upgraded -- Daveh (talk) 16:01, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
  • Done --- All services should be back up and working under 1.28. -- Daveh (talk) 16:03, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

Issues[edit]

  • Syntax Highlighter Plugin Not Working -- I couldn't get the syntax highlighter plugin working with ElasticSearch so it is currently disabled. -- Daveh (talk) 16:04, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
  • Class 'Symfony\\Component\\Process\\ProcessBuilder -- Had to run composer install in extensions/SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi/ (assuming that fixed it). -- Daveh (talk) 16:27, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
  • Pages Not Displayed Correctly -- The cause is unclear, but some pages temporarily lost access to some of the MetaTemplate data. This caused empty entries or template code like {{{cat}}} to be displayed. Purging the page fixes the problem. Robin Hood(talk) 17:35, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Working As Intended[edit]

  • Preferences Updated -- At some point (perhaps after viewing your preferences?), they may be automatically updated to use the Enhanced Editing Toolbar as well as enabling a few editing wizards. I believe this is intentional. The settings can be disabled by going into your preferences and unchecking the relevant items on the Editing tab. Robin Hood(talk) 17:59, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Page Protection Requested[edit]

For the past few days, an anonymous editor has repeatedly added erroneous information to the Oblivion:Under Leveling page. After the second edit, I politely explained to the user why their edit was incorrect with regards to the vanilla game and the likely source of the erroneous information, but the user apparently ignored both my post and my request to start a talk page topic before editing the page again, requiring yet another revert. Given 3RR, I believe at least Semi-Protection for the page would be appropriate at this point to prevent the incorrect information being added yet again. Thanks for your time! — Wolfborn(Howl) 01:52, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

Instagram[edit]

Our Instagram has grown considerably, to the point I'd like it listed on our sidebar. The link should be [1] and the displayed text should be "Instagram". A favicon similar to the previous ones should be uploaded and place next to the link in the same fashion. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 16:36, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

Another maintenance task will be to update File:Sidebar.png once this is done. —Legoless (talk) 17:12, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

MetaTemplate Tracking Categories[edit]

As some of you are already aware, MediaWiki 1.35 and beyond have changed the default parser—the part of MediaWiki that turns what you type when editing into what you see when viewing. The new parser works on a fundamentally different principle and would break almost every page on the wiki if we ever went through with the upgrade. We're not alone in this; several other wikis have mentioned that they're facing similar issues and some extension designers have also complained that the new parser will break their extension in whole or in part. In our case, the vast majority of the issues arise from MetaTemplate, an extension developed by Nephele back in 2009.

While it seems likely that we'll have to upgrade no further than 1.34 in the short to medium term, it's possible that we'll have to abandon MetaTemplate in the long term. To that end, I've created a number of what are called "tracking categories"—categories maintained by the software itself rather than by users—so we know exactly what will break and what won't, categorized based on features that are likely be broken or salvageable as a group. You can find the parent category at MetaTemplate. The categories are already being populated as people edit pages, but I'll be triggering a forced update of all pages on the wiki some time soon. I expect some of the categories will number in the tens of thousands of pages by the time they're fully up to date, while other features are not widely used, so there will be less of an impact.

Those of you who have hidden categories enabled will be able to see which pages will be hit and in which ways. For those who don't but want to see the new categories, you can toggle them on by going into your preferences, then at the bottom, select the "Show hidden categories" check box and save. ESO Map Custom World Tiles[edit]

Thal-J brought up the idea of using his Accurate World Map add-on for the tiles in the ESO map. See below for the examples:

On one hand the accurate map is more detailed and looks better but on the other hand isn't "official". Was thinking we could add a toggle like we do the Skyrim Map for Day/Night tilesets but wanted to get other people's feedback on it. -- Daveh (talk) 14:37, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

I think as a toggle it is fine. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 14:47, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
A toggle sounds good. The fanmade maps are fantastic but it will confuse visitors if the default is not as the maps appear in-game. —Legoless (talk) 14:55, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Affiliation with the forked Independent Fallout Wiki[edit]

Greetings all!

I'm a community ambassador and editor for the newly established Independent Fallout Wiki. I've joined here today to discuss the potential of becoming affiliates with you folks. I can briefly tell you what an Affiliate means.

Affiliates are wikis or websites that do the following:

  • On your end, you add a new page, (I.E. UESP: Affiliates, Fallout Wiki: Affiliates) which would contain a small blurb about the site that's listed and vice versa for our side. In this case, on your end it would be the Independent Fallout Wiki and on our end, it would UESP!
  • On your end, a navbox or template would be added to the Main Page + any other pages where you find it might be appropriate and vice versa on our end. You can see an example of this on doomwiki.org, who have already partnered with us! This grants easy access to the sites, since their on the main page!
  • On both of our ends, we link back to each other on articles that relate more to UESP and vice versa with Fallout Wiki. We do have some minor Elder Scrolls Creation Club content, which we can link back to you guys.

And that's pretty much all there is to it! And plus, being able to just, be affiliates with a wiki such as UESP would be a big step for us in getting us recognized! We hope that you all can consider this prospect! :)

You can check our wiki at fallout.wiki.

C0NN1E (talk) 15:21, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

I have already had some communication with this team, and their wiki looks very well done, I welcome anything that allows independent wikis such as the UESP to help maintain that independence. I would like to see us affiliate with other independent wikis too as too many are being eaten up by Fandom. I fully support this proposal. Imperialbattlespire (talk) 15:36, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
Just a more general question but is this a remnant of the original The Vault Wiki that was later hosted on Gamepedia? It's a shame Gamepedia got merged into Fandom's monopoly, I always hoped we could partner with The Vault again. The editors and users of Wikia are never bad themselves, it's Fandom's inhuman tactics that make it hard to stay there. The Rim of the Sky (talk) 17:32, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
No, we're former editors from Nukapedia, not the Vault, though they merged a while ago. Our lead admin, Kate, was a former bureaucrat over at Nukapedia and she decided to form an independent fork, following a ban from Fandom due to some wiki drama early this year (Nukapedia keeps blaming Kate for a lot of issues for some reason). Things have been really smooth so far and I'm happy with the direction things are going. We'd love to work with you guys. C0NN1E (talk) 17:40, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
I've talked a bit with you and your community on Discord and I can say that you made quite a positive impression on me for this potential partnership. I think it's still important that we figure out what it would exactly entail, but it is a first step to integrate different Bethesda communities with each other (which is something we might seriously consider due to our project with the Starfield wiki). --Ilaro (talk) 20:59, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

Odd Edits on Shezzar and Lorkhan-adjacent Pages[edit]

There's been some odd edits on the Shezzar page and Lorkhan-Adjacent pages by various IPs which might be the same person. It has even gone far enough that citations are being edited from the original text to include things not said on the original citation to support their claims (example) I am unsure Shezzar and Lorkhan's etc full range of citations, but could not find references to statements of titles like "God of Mankind" and "Father of Mankind". Seeing as how citations are being edited to support claims, I doubt that the rest edits made on the article are accurate and do not have enough time to check their other references to see if the other claims are accurate, or if any other citations have been edited to support claims. Zebendal (talk) 21:22, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

I neglected to post an update on this at the time, but earlier, I semi-protected Shezzar for a week. I didn't notice any other recent problematic edits, but if there are any, please let us know and I or one of the other admins will protect or (range-)block as needed. Being lorephobic, I leave it to others to decide what information is worth keeping and what's not. AKB went through everything we could find from any of those IP ranges earlier, so hopefully the only stuff left will be things that are either debateable or outright supported by lore. He also mentioned that Lore:Nede may take a bit of untangling. Robin Hood(talk) 02:45, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
Alright thank you for the update! - Zebendal (talk) 02:47, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
The IP editor went right back to editing after the page protection, but on Lore:Shor this time, which I took to mean that they were well aware their edits weren't inappropriate, so I didn't go through the normal warn-then-block procedure. Since they've been changing IPs fairly regularly, I gave them a one-week range block on the address range they're using most and left a note on the talk page of the last IP they edited from. There's a second range that a small handful of their edits have come from which I haven't blocked for the moment, but we can if need be. I try to avoid blocking too much, though, since the wider the block, the more likely it is that a legitimate IP editor will get caught by it. Robin Hood(talk) 04:28, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
I had placed a warning earlier on the 14th on one of the IP's talk pages. —Legoless (talk) 12:08, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
It is happening again.Zebendal (talk) 09:34, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
I've blocked the range for a month, and in case they circumvent that (they've been seen from other ranges on occasion) or they start at it again as soon as the block expires, I also semi-protected the two pages they edited for three months. We can take additional actions as needed. Robin Hood(talk) 10:19, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
The editor has returned, at this point lock Shezzar from being edited by IPs. We did it for the Naemon page, we can also do it for this page.Zebendal (talk) 15:01, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

Lock Fishing and Fishing (activity) pages[edit]

That page tends to attract vandals that keep editing the number 69 to others. Its been through many reverts combined. Please lock it for registered users only. - Zebendal (talk) 00:35, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

I'm not opposed to the idea—we've done it for a short period in the past—but at least based on today's posts, it seems like people just aren't reading the notes at the end of the line. For now, I've added the link to the HTML note as well...I even considered splitting it into 6<!--(note)-->9 so you almost had to read the note in between. I thought that might be pushing it, though. Let's see how it goes and if things are still problematic in the future, we can permanently semi-protect the page. Robin Hood(talk) 05:36, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

Admin Bot[edit]

As things stand now, none of our bots has admin permissions. For the most part, we haven't needed them, although even as things stand, all of our bots have slightly higher permissions than the default for bots, two of which are for specific jobs. The only one of particular note is the ability to protect pages and edit them, which HoodBot uses to run automated page protection for our various archives, main game pages, and so forth. The more negligible rights all our bots have are:

  • View a deleted page's history (but not the text). The ESO NPC creator uses that to detect NPCs that have previously been created and deleted so it doesn't try to create them again.
  • Title blacklist override. This just allows all our bots to override the title blacklist when creating a page, much as they ignore CAPTCHA checks.
  • In the past, we've temporarily granted HoodBot admin permissions so it could bulk-change infinite IP blocks. (Note: technically, it was still on HotnBOThered's account, but it was the very beginnings of HoodBot that were running behind the scenes, since HnB had no ability to manage blocks at all.)

Since we keep having these needs intermittently, and since HoodBot seems to be the only one using them, I'd like to request that HoodBot be granted permanent admin rights, or if not full admin rights then at least a significant subsection of those rights. It probably shouldn't be patrolling edits or blocking users, for example, but that's a simple question of whether to give the bot full admin powers with the understanding it won't do certain things, which is much easier, or whether to create a whole new rights list for it, which is safer in the event that a bot job goes rogue or the bot account is hacked. Full disclosure: the ability to mass delete last night's faulty bot run would be really handy right now, which is why I'm thinking of it, but I intend to delete those files manually since bots don't currently have deletion rights. If people are okay with giving HoodBot admin rights, I'd suggest that we remove page protection abilities for non-admin bots at the very least, and probably viewing the deleted revision history can go too, since it's such a specific use case.

Password reset ten years later?[edit]

Hi, I’m C Teng, and I haven’t logged in since 2012. I’d like to edit again, but I’m not sure it was even possible to connect email to an account when I created it in 2008, so I can’t do a regular password reset. However, I recently regained access to my Wikia/Fandom account, and I’ve just put a message on my user page there that should hopefully be sufficient evidence that I am indeed who I say I am. (If not, no biggie—I made most of my edits here as a dumbass 13-year-old, so no great loss if I have to make a new account. But I thought I’d ask.) Thanks. 208.125.39.195 23:01, 29 January 2023 (UTC)

You actually do have an e-mail associated with the account, but it's a domain I haven't seen anyone use in a very long time, so even though the domain still exists AFAIK, I wouldn't be surprised if you no longer have access to that account. Regardless, your edits on Wikia are sufficient for me to believe that you're you. If you can e-mail me from the e-mail address you want to associate with your account, I can set that up and then you should be able to do a standard reset from there. Robin Hood(talk) 03:07, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
Just to follow up on this, I still haven't heard from you. If you tried to send something, it may have gotten caught by my spam filter. If you changed your mind and decided to start a new account, that's fine too. Just let me know what's up. Thanks! Robin Hood(talk) 14:44, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
My bad, kept forgetting to check back here! Awesome, thank you! I'll send that email to you right now. And wow, you must be referring to my AOL Instant Messenger email address, lol. That's really old, jeez. 208.125.39.195 00:23, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
Okay, wow. Never thought I'd regain access to that ancient AOL account, but I just tried the first password I ever made, the one I created in 2006 at age 11—and it worked! C Teng is back, on UESP and AOL. Exciting times. Glad you mentioned it was set up under a weird domain, because I never would've guessed I still had anything linked to AOL in 2012, lol. Kill Rollback Gadget[edit]

For admins who sometimes click on "rollback" accidentally, there's now a gadget to allow you to disable the button. You still have the right and the text will still display (albeit faded), but the button won't work. Of course, should a spammer strike, you can disable the gadget to re-enable rollback at any time. This is an insanely primitive gadget, so let me know if you come across any cases of it not working. Oh and only those who have rollback rights will see the gadget. Requesting Lore:Hero be protected or an IP be blocked[edit]

Hello, there have been numerous edits done on Lore:Hero by one IP that repeatedly change the pronouns of heroes. Tyrvarion and I have tried stopping these edits via undos, talk page, and warning, but they persist. If they could be blocked or the page could be protected to prevent this, that would be much appreciated. Mindtrait0r (talk) 15:24, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

This is the same IP range as has been making all the tendentious edits to Lore:Shezarr and all those other pages. I blocked the entire range for a year, and just to add a little extra protection, I also protected the page for a month. Robin Hood(talk) 16:08, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

Contributor Behavior Policy[edit]

Hoping this is the right place to post this - apologies if it's not.

Earlier today I finished an in-game (Elder Scrolls Online) conversation with one of my guilds' members who was very enthusiastic about the UESP project and was trying to get involved/spent a lot of time editing/contributing information to help update. All of her work was then deleted by another contributor with minimal explanation (she sincerely didn't understand), she was scolded, and apparently he then sent her a nasty email which unsurprisingly turned her off to our whole organization in general and now she really dislikes UESP. When I viewed this "aggressor's" edits out of curiosity, his editing comments do look rather patronizing.

The reason I'm bringing this is up is frankly not asking for intervention regarding someone else's personal drama that happened in the past, but more to ask about how UESP goes about policing such interactions / behavior, if at all, or what standards/screening/vetting processes there are in place, if any, in lieu, prior to user engagement. Of course we are all volunteers and all enterprises have their fair share of jerks, but such interactions of course have implications for future benefaction, I don't think it unreasonable to expect minimal decorum when interacting with others, and it was, in the least, a disappointing story to hear - certainly not a great look for "us."

Thanks for your consideration (and patience as I am *still* learning how to navigate the wiki). eslofe (talk) 02:18, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi eslofe, there are certainly guidelines, etiquettes and policies in place for these kind of behavior. People should act kind, assume good faith and try to reach a consensus on talk pages. If someone doesn't adhere to these standards or when something can't be resolved due conflict between the two parties, it should be notified to a (neutral) admin or even DaveH (UESP's founder). Please do this, otherwise we won't be aware of this behavior, especially if something happens off-wiki in context of the wiki (like how you mentioned nasty emails). The admin will try to sort out the problem and take action where necessary. If you have any other questions, I'm happy to help!
I've no idea what happened in this specific case, and if your guild member wants, I can try to review it? It's no problem if the user wants to stay anonymous. You can reach me on my email listed on the wiki or my discord Ilaro#6607. --Ilaro (talk) 22:17, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
Bah, Ilaro beat me to it! Most of my reply duplicates his, so the only thing I'll add is to your question about processes in place prior to user engagement. While there are the various policies, procedures, and guidelines that Ilaro mentioned, the wiki is generally free for anyone to edit. We only get involved if something goes wrong. Someone undoing another's edit can sometimes be a case of something going wrong, and it's not always obvious at a glance. No single person—not even Dave—gets to decide what content is or isn't appropriate for the wiki. If someone undoes an edit wholesale, especially a large/complex one, it's best to ask another wiki editor or even an entire Discord channel (#wiki-discussion, usually) for a second opinion. Robin Hood(talk) 22:41, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
Just wanted to close the loop on this - thanks for above, and thanks additionally to AKB and Baratron for taking the time to reach out and help get things sorted. :) eslofe (talk) 18:15, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

ESO Online Pages Needing Cleanup[edit]

It seeems like just about every page for ESO Online (1,125 total) is flagged as needing cleanup for Update 36. How is this flag applied, how can it be cleared, and are we going to see it come back now that Update 37 is released? Fiwiji (talk) 15:55, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

I'd like to know how it can be cleared too. I've seen it on the armor pages, I know how to update them, I'd *like* to, but cannot figure out how to do clear it. Oath2order (talk) 18:17, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
After confirming that the page's data is accurate to Update 37, removing the {{Online Update}} template at the top of the page will clear the tag. Mindtrait0r (talk) 20:16, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
For some reason I thought that was always there. Oath2order (talk) 20:36, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
Hmm, looking at the template page that might be true. If so, apologies for the misinformation. Mindtrait0r (talk) 21:08, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
I thought it was something like that, but I haven't seen a template on any the pages that display the message. I've tried every edit on the page, including the one at the very top. It's like the template is either hidden or inherited from somewhere else. Fiwiji (talk) 23:32, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

() The {{Online Update}} template is a reminder to editors to update the information on the page whenever a new patch comes out. Once that's been done, for anything except skills or item sets, you should add/change to the template to indicate that everything's up to date and that the message doesn't need to be displayed. So, for example, if you've just updated an NPC for patch 37, you would use: {{Online Update|update=37}} and the message will disappear. For skills and item sets, the bot updates those and handles the update procedure automatically, so there's no need to update those, but you should ping me on Discord to remind me that it needs to be done. I usually wait a day or two after a new patch drops, just to be sure that we actually have up-to-date information in the ESO viewer, which is where the bot takes its data from. Also, just so you understand what you're looking at, the bot uses a behind-the-scenes method of mass updating version numbers across all pages of a specific type (so far, skills and item sets), so on those pages, you shouldn't see any update parameters; if you do, they can be removed.

While removing the template will certainly remove the message, it's also removing the entire reminder for all future updates, so you no longer know at a glance whether the page has been updated or not. So don't do that. On the contrary, if you see a page that reasonably should be updated every version but doesn't have that template, please add it. Since I don't play the game, I have no idea what types of pages that might encompass, but I would guess that probably NPCs would be one broad category, and maybe quests. Places probably don't need one, since I imagine those tend to be fairly static, and even if there are slight changes on occasion, they're probably not major unless they're patch-related. Then again, I would've said that about item sets as well and we see major changes to those often enough, so don't take my word for it. The frequent ESO editors can give better guidance here than I can.

Related to this, whenever a new patch comes out, you should also update Online:Patch to use the new version number, as I just did here. Anyone can (and should) do this. That will trigger a whole new wave of message boxes to appear so that people know that things need updating. Do not adjust the version numbers in the botitemset or botskills parameters. As their name implies, those are the behind-the-scenes numbers that the bot uses to indicate when it's updated those things. Robin Hood(talk) 17:19, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Skills and sets were showing the Update 36 cleanup header until today, when they switched to Update 37. Did the bot to clean them up not get run since November when Update 36 came out? Fiwiji (talk) 21:28, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
They changed because I updated the patch number earlier when I posted the above message. Right now, for the bot-updated stuff, only skills should still be displaying the note, and those will go away shortly, as I'm just doing a few last things and then I'll be running the skills bot job. Also, from the looks of things, the bot never got ran after update 36, which is why it was still saying that things needed to be updated. Typically, that's a combination of me forgetting and nobody reminding me. :) Robin Hood(talk) 00:09, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
Skills have a summary paragraph below the in-game description. This paragraph appears to be generated manually, as I've found several that were a couple updates out of date. There are several skills/morphs in this update that are getting significant reworks, which means their summaries will be out of sync with their descriptions again. Is there a way to flag pages where the bot updates the description so users know the summary needs to be looked at, and then a way to clear the flag when the summary is verified/corrected? Fiwiji (talk) 12:12, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
In theory, the bot's results page should show you the significant (description) changes and the trivial ones where only the numbers changed, but I recently rewrote that and it looks as though it's currently spitting out all changes as non-trivial and no change at all as trivial. I'll have a look at that later today and I think I should be able to update the list so it's accurate, but the existing list can probably get you started. I think I'll also move it to a dedicated page as well because as it is, it tends to get obliterated pretty quickly by other jobs, so you end up having to comb through the results history sometimes just to find those results.
There's currently no tag/untag mechanism, but we can either add a category/template to any page that gets a description update, or we can extend the existing system a little so that if the bot makes a description change, it alters the page Online Update template to read something like {{Online Update|textupdate=needed}}, then the person who updates it can simply remove the textupdate= portion once it's been updated. Either is easy for the bot, so it's just a question of what would be easiest and most intuitive for editors. Robin Hood(talk) 14:38, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
The bot results have now been updated correctly. I haven't moved them to a new page yet, though. That'll come next time we do a full run. Robin Hood(talk) 04:45, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
Modifying the {{Online Update}} template would require it to be added to all Skill pages instead of handled invisibly as it is now. If an editor accidentally deleting the template from the page would cause problems for the bot, then a unique {{TextUpdateNeeded}} template might be a better approach. Another consideration is that, even for trivial updates, there will likely be a patch note documenting the change that should get added to the page. Fiwiji (talk) 21:02, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Sidebar tools capitalization[edit]

This is super minor of course, but I noticed that every link in the sidebar is in title case except for a few in the toolbox: "Related changes", "Page information", "Cite this page", and "View user groups". Personally I dislike the UESPWiki:Spelling policy of capitalizing every word in titles and headings (I much prefer the Wikipedia approach of universal sentence case), but if we're gonna do it, we might as well be consistent about it. I can't seem to find the MediaWiki page for those links, though—MediaWiki:Sidebar just has "TOOLBOX". —‍Will ‍• ‍B[talk] 21:54, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

This is actually harder than it looks and it brings up a larger question as to what should be capitalized and what shouldn't. In the sidebar, the ones with mixed case are drawing from system names, which use the Wikimedia policy of mixed case, and those have to be updated by finding the relevant system message and updating it—it's not just a matter of changing a single page. Then, if you do that, maybe Special Pages should also be done. But then, if you do that, maybe all our custom extensions should also be updated. And on and on it goes....
Back in the dawn of time, I'm pretty sure all those system links were title case too, but Wikimedia made the switch, where we never did, so that's why there's the discrepancy. Personally, I'd be for switching to mixed case for most pages outside of gamespace. Inside gamespace, I can see that causing a lot of confusion, since it gets into the issue of what's a proper noun and what isn't. Is Unmarked Cave actually called "Unmarked Cave" by the locals or is it just a cave that's not marked on any maps (except yours, apparently). Depending on which one is true, the capitalization will differ. My personal take would be that any marked places in the game, any NPC names, etc., should all use the in-game capitalization, which is almost always title case. But then that wraps back around to the vast majority of pages using title case, in which case the mixed case pages, like "Main quest", start to look like oddballs, so there would have to be a discussion around that.
This is why nobody's ever changed them. 😉 Robin Hood(talk) 17:42, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
Sounds like a whole can of worms! Well, maybe someday. And yeah I can see how the in-game capitalizations make it more confusing than for other types of wikis. Since video game interfaces often like to capitalize just about everything. Caused me plenty of distress back in my RuneScape Wiki days. —Will • B[talk] 01:18, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, it's definitely a can of worms and the more you look into it, the deeper the can goes. I hadn't really given it much thought, but you may have a point that switching away from sentence case and overriding the MediaWiki defaults to be title case might be the best choice. At least then, the numbers of changes are going to be relatively limited...or at least I think they would. I'm a little busy at the moment, but maybe one of the other patrollers or admins will have the time/willpower to look at it. Anyone looking for a project? Robin Hood(talk) 02:26, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Delete account[edit]

Hello i want my account data removed please (username, contributions, etc) Gazorpo (talk) 13:13, 25 March 2023 (UTC)

Unfortunately, MediaWiki doesn't have that ability. What we can do, however, is to randomize your name and password so that nobody can access it. You can also remove any personal information from your preferences. In your case, we can also delete your sandbox, which seems to be where you've done most of your work. There's nothing we can do about your historical contributions to other pages on the wiki, however, and anyone viewing them could trace your new account name to them quite easily, so randomizing the name doesn't actually serve much purpose in the end. Please understand, it's not that we're unwilling, it's that we're unable. If you'd like to have your name and/or password randomized, please let us know and we'll be happy to do that. Graph Extension Disabled[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation released an announcement earlier today saying that the Graph extension had several significant security vulnerabilities and recommending that anyone using it disable the extension immediately. For tonight, I've gone ahead and done exactly that, but in the "simple" way that's going to leave raw <graph> tags showing anywhere that there used to be actual graphs. Undoubtedly, this will mess with the formatting of any affected pages. Tomorrow, I'll create a fake extension to put in its place so that the graph tags can be hidden and categories created, similar to what WMF themselves are doing. For anyone who's interested, the announcement and bug report thread are here, though the technical details are hidden from public view and access to those threads is tightly restricted. Robin Hood(talk) 05:05, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

Update: the replacement extension is in place. For now, any use of <graph> will be replaced by a blank and categorized into Category:Pages with disabled graphs (the same category name as MediaWiki defaults to). We can change that behaviour fairly easily if desired, like displaying a link to an explanation or a link to the category.
We should also consider whether we want to continue including graphs at all. They do add value to the pages they're on, and I know Dcsg put in a lot of work on them, but my concern is that once Graph is fixed, it'll probably only be fixed for more recent versions of MediaWiki, which means it may take quite a bit of work to get it working again. Right now, graphs are only used in Blades and Legends space, so I'm wondering if we want to tear the band-aid off while it's still early. On the other hand, there may be other places we could put it to use, in which case I don't want to suggest removing it unnecessarily. Robin Hood(talk) 01:03, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

This seems to be only for certain cards. If I hover over those on the doc page, they work fine. Robin Hood(talk) 15:01, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
That card's popup image does not exist. I reran the popup image creation script to update all images from the card database. I don't see the "Death Scythe" card there however and its not in the card database (https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Special:LegendsCardData). This is a MetaTemplate bug, possibly related to the #save problem I was mentioning in Discord. I'm looking into it. Robin Hood(talk) 16:32, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
Fixed. If things still show up incorrectly, you'll probably have to purge the page and/or any pages it gets data from. For those following the technical details, I'll also be posting about it in the Discord technical channel in a minute. Robin Hood(talk) 04:49, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

Thank you, <3 . I seem to have lost access to all my UESPEditor builds I have made because of that change - is it possible for me to regain access to them? Inb4: if not possible - then okay, I'll manage. The change itself is more important to me than access to these builds. Thanks again

Affiliation Request[edit]

Hello, my name is Korra II. I'm a founding admin of the Mystery Dungeon Franchise Wiki (MDFW). I'm a long-time reader, selcom contributor. I wanted to reach out regarding affiliation with my wiki.

Our goal is to be the one-stop shop for Mystery Dungeon. The Mystery Dungeon Library of Alexandria, if you will. We document lore, merch, anime shorts, manga, guidebooks, novellas, character lore, series history, early prototype content, interviews, and more. I've gone as far as to purchase the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer Pachinko machine to be the only site on the internet that properly documents it. While there are only a few of us, we're extremely passionate about our franchise. I've shut down, partnered with, or absorbed 8 different Mystery Dungeon wikis and a discord server to build this wiki, 4 of which were on Fand0m. That being said, I believe the only real way to deal with the Fand0m problem is through word of mouth and indie's supporting each other.

I'm unable to link to our affiliates, SEO and social media analytics or home page. However, there's only one MDFW, so we shouldn't be difficult to find. Thank you for your time and consideration. <3

Thanks for the request! While a little outside our typical content we love to support other independent wikis so I've added it to our Affiliates page! -- Daveh (talk) 15:52, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, it genuinely means a lot. The UESP helped me get into Oblivion when I was struggling to understand it, and you guys are a large part of why I became a wiki editor. <3 Korra II A Royal (talk) 03:40, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

UESP 2024 Christmas Gifts[edit]

It's that time of year again and we're giving away 2024 Calendars and a set of four 9x12 posters to select groups of UESP staff and editors.

  • Any admin/officer on any platform (wiki, forum, discord, ESO builds, etc...).
  • All wiki editors with more than 100 edits in 2023 (you can check here).

You can submit your mailing address here.

Depending on how many extra posters/calendars we have left over we may loosen that last requirement a bit in the future. Thanks to everyone for a great 2023 and looking forward to another amazing year! -- Daveh (talk) 14:45, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

Name change request[edit]

Please could I have my username changed from Presto to Jinks? That'll match the name of the Discord account I've still got access to, and hopefully stop pings to the one I don't! Thank you. - Presto (talk) 18:33, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Spam Protection - Don't Allow Wiki Edits by IP addresses?[edit]

Sorry if this has been considered before (as I suspect it has, probably more than once), but I've noticed that most vandalism/nonsense edits relate to editors without accounts and/or users not logged in. I strongly suggest - while obviously not guaranteed to solve all such issues - all pages across the wiki should be locked from editing when the editor is not logged into a (free) account. It may go against the principle of the open nature of the wiki, but creating an account is free, and the ridiculous amount of vandalism routinely cropping up is a significant drain on the admins' limited time and detrimental to the wiki regardless. Thanks for the consideration! --Mikeprichard (talk) 04:55, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

I don't think we've been struggling particularly badly with repeated vandalism of late? We have tools available to block and revert all vandalism, IP or otherwise. Reducing the pool of editors to avoid the issue seems like overcompensation to me. —Legoless (talk) 09:46, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
To your first point, we have indeed considered blocking IP edits before, a couple of times, and every time the general consensus has been what Legoless just said. There are also a lot of useful edits coming from IP addresses, not just spam and vandalism. A recent example of this is New Page Requests, which has a ton of edits from one particular IP. Robin Hood(talk) 15:25, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
Understood - thanks for the replies and info! --Mikeprichard (talk) 09:38, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Watchlist and Recent Changes Options/Preferences?[edit]

One last question - for quite a while I've been hoping for two convenience options in user preferences: hiding pages' associated "talk" pages from the "watchlist", and selecting certain namespaces to hide from the "recent changes" view (e.g., I'm not interested in listing any "Online:" page changes). I understand the watchlist itself can be used to somewhat mitigate the second point, but are either of these options actually already available, and if so, how can I use them? If they're not available, could one or both please be considered for addition to the wiki? Thanks again! --Mikeprichard (talk) 09:38, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Under Recent Changes, Select one namespace: Online -> Invert selection -> Show. This will filter out ESO results. It will not hide the Online talk namespace however. I don't know of a way to exclude talk pages from RC or watchlist results. —Legoless (talk) 10:15, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
Oh, I somehow didn't look at that; thanks! But is there a way to filter out more than one namespace at the same time, or better yet, to only show "recent changes" to specific selected namespaces (I'm most interested in only the four namespaces Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim)? --Mikeprichard (talk) 10:31, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
This made me wonder what "Namespace: Turn on custom list" does on the RC page. The Setup link beside it goes to a preferences page unrelated to namespace filtering.
As a solution, check out my sandbox and the code below. I transcluded Recent Changes and used several parameters to specify what you want. The important difference here is that with transclusions, it lets you include multiple namespaces separated by semicolons.
{{Special:RecentChanges/days=90,limit=500,hidebots,namespace=104;110;116;134}}
See the other possible parameters on MediaWiki's Recent Changes help page.
This API result shows what UESP's namespace numbers are, in case you want to customize further.
Dillonn241 (talk) 04:34, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Ha, I was JUST typing about how I snooped on your sandbox page (which I saw pop up on the Recent Changes list), and figured out exactly the above out based on that URL - thanks a lot for taking time to help me with this! I'd still like a way to hide "talk" pages from the Watchlist through a preferences option as well, but if that one's not possible or planned, so be it. Cheers! --Mikeprichard (talk) 04:41, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
I can't find anything for addressing your watchlist question. You can't transclude it in the same way, and the "Associated namespace" feature only works to add talk pages for a namespace you select. I would just recommend going into your watchlist and purging talk pages once in awhile. —Dillonn241 (talk) 04:42, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Got it; thanks very much once again. If I knew how to bake you a plate of wiki cookies, I would. --Mikeprichard (talk) 04:43, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

() It's pretty clear from the design that they at least considered the option of watching article pages and talk pages separately, but right now, having them go hand in hand is pretty much baked in. I've tried removing one but not the other from my watchlist on a test wiki, and it worked, but being so baked in, it would take a significant rewrite to actually get that working through the UI. I'm pretty sure you couldn't even do it with an extension at this point. Robin Hood(talk) 04:52, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

I see - thanks for looking into it, and for the explanation! It would have been a nice option, but it's not a big deal.--Mikeprichard (talk) 05:03, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Another vandalizing IP address-only account[edit]

159.2.53.105 - several nonsense/"blanking" edits to Skyrim pages today that have yet to be reverted. — Unsigned comment by Mikeprichard (talkcontribs) at 21:35 on 10 January 2024 (UTC)

172.251.169.141 - and another --Mikeprichard (talk) 02:24, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
Looks like Jeancey got the first one and I warned and revision-deleted the second one a little earlier. Thanks! Robin Hood(talk) 04:28, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

86.29.213.176 [4] - thanks, all; here's yet another. IP accounts being vandals continues to be the rule, not the exception, with at least daily incidents over the past couple weeks that I've noticed. --Mikeprichard (talk) 16:19, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Warned. As for IP accounts being primarily vandals, Recent Changes doesn't back you up on that. As of 14:27 (UTC) today, there have been 144 edits by 10 different IP addresses and two edits by one IP which appear to have been vandalism. Even if, for some reason, you discount the one prolific IP editor, there's still nearly a 10:1 ratio of good IP edits to vandalism. Robin Hood(talk) 16:13, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
If that's the case (and I've certainly noticed the single extremely prolific IP editor making constructive edits), fair enough - I'm more just frustrated on your/the UESP's behalf that so much time must be spent on this incessant nonsense in order to maintain the integrity of the wiki. Some real nutjobs out there (other than me, I mean)! --Mikeprichard (talk) 16:19, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Hehehe. Unfortunately, that goes with the territory. Restricting edits to accounts only would almost certainly reduce the amount of vandalism, but some people are still willing to create accounts in order to vandalize, and in the meantime, we lose those edits by IP editors who don't feel their edit is worth creating an account for (which I'm guilty of myself on other wikis). Patroller Access to MediaWiki space[edit]

While looking at how permissions work on the Starfield wiki, a few editors noticed that there were some changes in how access to the MediaWiki namespace was handled in later versions of MediaWiki. The reason for that is to limit even administrators' access to edit pages that could be used to really mess up the wiki or create security vulnerabilities. Respecting WMF's reasoning, I've separated out the ability to edit MediaWiki space from Patrollers and turned it into its own special group. This also allows employees like ThalJ to access it without needing any additional rights. At least for now, administrators' access remains unchanged, though some things will change automatically once we get to MW 1.32. For the sake of not overcomplicating this post, I'll save that discussion for whenever the time comes.

For now, this means that any patrollers who want to continue to be able to edit MediaWiki space will need to ask me or another admin for access to it. (Admins: you can do this by selecting "interface editor" in their groups.) Since we've agreed in the past that the wiki benefits from patrollers having access to MediaWiki, this is free for the asking, but for those same security reasons I mentioned, it makes sense not to give access to patrollers who will never use it or who feel less comfortable in that space. Feel free to reply here or tag/DM me on Discord if you're a patroller and would like access to MediaWiki space again. Robin Hood(talk) 04:11, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

Thank you, RobinHood. It's good to have these permissions separate, just like how we have blocker rights separate (there are a lot of inactive patrollers). I can't think of any patrollers off-hand who would need it right now, so we'll have to wait for requests. —Dillonn241 (talk) 04:16, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
