Grushnag gro-Arkul is an Orc bandit and friend of Crouches-In-Crevices who appears outside Capstone Cave during The Screeching Songman.
Grushnag is equipped with chainmail armor, gauntlets, helmet and boots, and is armed with an iron club and an iron shield. He also carries a draught of the warrior, a potent paralysis poison and a random selection of gold, lockpicks, gems, jewelry, food and drink.

Quest-Related Events[edit]
After speaking to Crouches about Renod Even-Toned's prized lute, he will mischievously suggest you tell Renod to visit Capstone Cave and perform for a group of his friends:
- "We kicked that old horker out of here a little while back. Can still hear him from his house across the way. It'd be nice to get rid of that nuisance. Here's the truth. Yes, I took it. It was made out of a fine oak and encrusted with some rubies. Good gold, friend. So, I sold it. To some of my most prolific business partners."
- Where are these business partners?
- "Capstone Cave. It's not too far from Bruma. By all means, go take it up with them. Either they'll kill you or you'll kill them. Makes no difference to me. Our business has already concluded. However, I have a smarter proposal."
- What do you suggest?
- "We drove Renod out of the Watchman, and he's no doubt had the same happen at the Jerall View. He's out of work. I'm sure you've seen the hilarious 'bardic masterclass' posters he's putting up all around Bruma in the hope of keeping a roof over his head. Well, tell him he's got a new venue to play at. Tell him to go to Capstone and play."
Head over to Capstone Cave, where Grushnag will meet you just outside:
- I want to talk to you about a deal.
- "Who's this, lads? Another hunk of meat ready for the grinder?"
You now have multiple options. The first is trying to buy the lute:
- Perhaps I could arrange to buy a certain lute you've acquired?
- "A lute? You found out we got the lute from Crouches? How- eh, what does it matter? Our business went south anyway. Sure, I'll sell you the lute. I'd say a thousand is a reasonable price for it, wouldn't you say?"
- Isn't that a bit steep? Perhaps we could work out a better offer?
- "A better offer? Yeah, you're right, actually. That price is all wrong. Two thousand."
- You just raised the price. I want it lowered.
- "What was that? You want me to raise the price? Sure. three thousand gold. Final offer."
Whenever you find a deal, he will say:
- You've got a deal. (1000 gold) / You've got a deal. (2000 gold) / You've got a deal. (3000 gold)
- "Hmm. Sure. Alright. Here. Take the lute. Damn thing's worthless anyway. Now go, before we change our minds."
However, if at any point you change your mind or leave, he will attack:
- On second thought, never mind.
- "I don't like your tone. You're trying to confuse us or buy time or something. Hmm. Quick, everyone! Attack!"
- I'm leaving. Goodbye.
- "S/He's skittish! And s/he's seen us! Quick, boys, get her/him before s/he can get the Watch!"
Alternatively, you can try a bold approach:
- I'm getting a lute from inside your cave.
- "Marching into our hideout, without our permission? Ha-ha-ha! Get a load of this, lads! Get ready to pound this one into a pulp."
At this point you will be able to either Persuade or Intimidate Grushnag to part with the lute. To succeed with either you will need to pass an Average Speech challenge. Failure will result in the bandits attacking you:
Answer | Success | Fail |

It'd be much easier to just give me the lute. It's worthless anyway. (Persuade) | "Worthless? Really? Damn it all! I was hoping to save enough money for my retirement home in Anvil. Fine, fine. Here, take it. Let's head back inside, lads. Don't want to get mauled by wolves, do ya, you milksops?" | "Ha! Do you think I'm that gullible? Idiot! Get 'em, lads!" |
Are you sure you want to do that? (Intimidate) | "Err, I'm actually not so sure I am. Stay your weapon, friend. Fine, fine. Here, take it. Let's head back inside, lads. Don't want to get mauled by wolves, do ya, you milksops?" | "Sure as can be. Get 'em, lads!" |
Your final option is to set up Renod:
- I'm here to negotiate a business arrangement.
- "Really, now? Hmm... interesting. Well, you're certainly bold, wandering up to a bandit lair... Explain yourself. Now."
- I've got a bard looking for work. I understand you're in need of entertainment.
- "Hah- well, I... suppose it's true. Yeah, we are a little light on entertainment. What are his terms?"
- He'll probably come cheap.
- "Then I think we've got ourselves a deal, boys. When's this minstrel gonna arrive?"
- I'll go tell him right away. Expect him soon.
- "Wonderful. Looks like we've just booked ourselves some world-class entertainment, boys. Now, let's get back inside and await our new arrival."
If you convince Renod to take up this opportunity and lead him to the cave, he will initially be confused:
- Renod: "Quite an unconventional location for a new tavern, but I imagine it will be quite the hotspot soon enough! And who better to serenade the customers than Renod Even-Toned? Well, here I am. Where is the innkeeper?"
- Grushnag: "Innkeeper? Heh. What fairy tale have you been feeding this old merrymaker?"
- Renod: "Bandits? Bandits?! What do you take me for? Some desperate, failed entertainer? I am outraged!"
- Grushnag: "Do you want work or not? Would you rather us all turn on you?"
- Renod: "Of course I want to work! Okay, I will do it, at least until my music is more appreciated by the... more refined of Tamriel."
- Grushnag: "First we want to hear you play. Then we'll decide if you're good enough."
Renod will ready himself and commence:
- Renod: "I told the netch, go play fetch, and he did, indeed, look most perplexed. So upon him, did I cast a hex, then, tired, so I did rest."
- Grushnag: "Yeah, yeah, that sounds great! Welcome aboard!"
- Renod: "Finally, someone who appreciates my talents! Onwards, to your, errm, establishment!"
As he turns to enter the cave, however, Grushnag will cut him down and turn to you:
- "Glad that's taken care of. Hmph. To think you tried to pass that guy over on us. Now, leave. Yes, I'm letting you live. The death of that old giant's toe left me in a pleasant mood. Oh, and you can take any loot he had on his corpse. My treat."
After this, Grushnag and his companions will enter the cave and become hostile.
