Reln-Tei

Reln-Tei is an Argonian beggar in Bruma. He is leading the citizens' efforts to get the terrible bard Renod Even-Toned to stop playing, and you will be directed to him during the related quest. If you get Renod to shut up, he will reward you with leveled gold, but if you instead kill the bard, Reln will refuse to speak to you.

Reln sleeps from 10pm to 8am on his haystack in one of the exterior alcoves in the Cathedral of St. Martin's southeastern wall. After a meager breakfast, at 10am he will start to wander around the city, begging the denizens of Bruma for a few septims. From 3pm to 5pm he can be found warming his hands in one of the braziers near Serulius the Stagnant's haystack and having a chat, before returning to his wanderings. At 10pm he will call it a day and will return to his haystack, where he will have a quick meal before going to sleep. On weekends, he will take a break from his usual routine and head over to The Restful Watchman from 8am to 11am.

Reln can afford little in the way of clothes: ragged robes, boots and cap, and some gloves. He carries six lockpicks, two empty wine bottles and a random selection of gold, lockpicks, gems, jewelry, food and drink.

Dialogue[edit]

During his wanderings he may approach you for coin:

"A Septim for an Argonian down on his luck?"
"Please, my lord. One septim would mean more to me than you could ever know..."
"Please, madam/sir, just one septim..."
What made you a beggar?
"A... a series of unlucky events. I'd... rather not talk about it."
What will you do with the gold?
"I will put it into the fund that I've been putting together for a while now, to buy a house and get a roof over my head. It's growing slowly, but surely. Houses are... expensive."
Have a coin, beggar.
"My most sincere thanks, honored friend."

Quest-Related Events[edit]

You may be pointed in Reln-Tei's direction by other Bruma citizens concerned about Renod Even-Toned's awful singing, as part of The Screeching Songman. Dar'taqto, Hulgard and Serulius the Stagnant will say:

"The beggar, Reln-Tei, has shown a particular interest in getting Renod to shut up, for some reason. You could go speak with him - perhaps he'd even pay you."

Over at the Jerall View Inn, Stantus Faleria will also comment:

"Reln-Tei has been complaining about some noise nuisiance. Talks my ear off about it. Probably that damnable "bard", Renod "Even-Toned"..."

Reln-Tei will also mention the hapless bard directly:

"Damn that Renod Even Toned [sic]. Xuth! Such a racket! If only he'd shut up!"
I've been told you're interested in getting Renod to shut up.
"I am. I try to be fairly humble, but sitting here day after day not being able to hear myself think for the racket he's causing, it dries my scales. Why do you ask? Are you interested in helping? There certainly isn't much a lowly Argonian beggar could do."
I'm not interested.
"I understand. Since I doubt Renod is going anywhere anytime soon, feel free to return if you reconsider."

If you return, he will ask:

Let's talk about the Renod problem again.
"Oh? Have you reconsidered?"
I'll talk to him.
"Thank you very much! I am a beggar, I can't even afford a roof over my head and I can barely afford to eat. However, if you were to deal with Renod, I can... arrange for you to be paid."
What if I killed him?
"No, no! Don't kill him. I am many things, but I am not a murderer. If I hear word of Renod's death I'll go straight to Adius and you'll be a wanted criminal."
I will if there's pay involved.
"I am a beggar, I can't even afford a roof over my head and I can barely afford to eat. However, if you were to deal with Renod, I can... arrange for you to be paid."
How would you "find a way" to pay me?
"I'd... I'd find a way. Somehow. Sell one of my few possessions, find a way to make a bit of odd gold, something. And before you ask - yes, I could use the money for myself, but I'm not an Argonian without honor. I want to reward you for doing me a service."
Would shutting Renod up really mean that much to you?
"He's causing me to get no sleep whatsoever. Of course it would."

When you return to Reln-Tei after resolving the situation by retrieving the bard's lute, he will be delighted:

"You're back! And that infernal screeching is gone! You convinced him?"
Happy to help.
"Ah, this is a relief I've been yearning for for months now! My most sincere thanks, honored friend. While you were dealing with Renod, I went and asked around town. People donated coin to a reward pot. People are much more willing to donate to this reward pot than they are to donate to a washed-up beggar, it seems. It is yours."
Yes. Now give me my reward. / My reward?
"Of course. I promised you a reward, and you shall have it."
Yes, Renod should bother you no more.
"Ah, this is a relief I've been yearning for for months now! My most sincere thanks, honored friend."

If you choose the latter three options he will continue:

"While you were dealing with Renod, I went and asked around town. People donated coin to a reward pot."

Either way, you will now have two choices:

Pleasure doing business with you. (Take reward)
"Yes. Here is your reward. Best wishes, honored friend, and thank you again."
You need it more than I. Keep it. (Refuse reward)
"Truly? I... this... this moistens my scales! No one would... has... this is not...What can I do with this gold, traveler? What could I do with it?"

You now have the option of telling him: I'm not your personal advisor. / Doesn't matter to me. / Take it. Start a new life.. In the latter case he will have a short unique line, before delivering a line shared with the other two options and gifting you a leveled enchanted sword:

"I... yes! Thank you! I will..."
"I will go to Leyawiin, and begin a new life. Perhaps even return to Black Marsh, in time. Thank you, honored friend! Thank you! But, here. Take this old keepsake of mine. I don't need it anymore."

On the other hand, if Renod dies during the quest Reln-Tei will suspect foul play and refuse to speak to you:

"I know you killed Renod. It isn't exactly hard to put two and two together. Out of my sight, murderer."

Conversations[edit]

While in Bruma, you may overhear Reln and fellow beggar Serulius the Stagnant bickering:

Serulius: "Aye, Reln. How'd you do today?"
Reln-Tei: "Not too bad. Lady Jucani was feeling generous today and gave me a septim. You could probably try her yourself tomorrow...and the Chapel was good, of course. How'd you do?"
Serulius: "Didn't do too bad, but don't try and beg from that old man Ralgar. Got an earful about 'making something of me'self' and little else."
Reln-Tei: "Duly noted. Thanks."

Reln-Tei: "I can't believe you, Serulius. You and I, we're in the same boat here..."
Serulius: "If you want some bread go and talk to Hjotra yourself. It's where I got mine. Though, to be fair, you just don't have the same charm as me..."
Reln-Tei: "Charm? Do you mean stench? The old woman just wanted you and your stink out of her fancy inn."
Serulius: "Whatever you say, Reln. I got a full loaf of bread, and you don't."

You may also overhear Elintius Rentilia gifting Reln a potion, before the Argonian asks Serulius whether he thinks it's fine:

Reln-Tei: "Excuse me, good mage, but can you spare a coin?"
Elintius: "Oh, hello Reln. I'm sorry, but I don't have any septims on me at the moment. These robes don't exactly have lots of pockets, you know!"
Reln-Tei: "Do you have any food at least? Everything helps."
Elintius: "Hrm, I do have this... er concoction I worked up recently. It's safe, and it doesn't taste too bad. It's useless to me if you want it. You may be able to sell it at least."
Reln-Tei: "Eh, thanks. Enjoy your day."
Reln-Tei: "Look at this? Does this ale look poisoned, or - or, enchanted to you?"
Serulius: "How in Oblivion would I know, Reln?"
Reln-Tei: "Gah. I should just get rid of it."
Serulius: "Why do you ask that, anyways?"
Reln-Tei: "Some guy in a skirt gave it to me - I think he was one of those Synod fellows. I don't trust them, and neither should you."
Serulius: "I don't, but a drink's a drink. Give it 'ere. I'll take the chance that it turns me into a toad."

Notes[edit]

  • Although he mentions moving to Leyawiin or Black Marsh if you let him keep the reward for The Screeching Songman, he will in fact remain in Bruma.
  • If you suggest killing Renod, Reln-Tei will always threaten to report you to guard captain Adius Vilius, regardless of the events in Service Rewarded.
