The Bleak Mine Guards are employed by Lord Drad to ensure his ogre slaves keep working and to guard Bleak Mine against intruders.

There are three types: two of them are identified as "Bleak Mine Guard", while the third type is called the "Bleak Mine Guard Captain".

Bleak Mine Guard

There are two Bleak Mine Guards in the mine. They wear leveled heavy armor consisting of a cuirass, helmet, shield and pair of boots (but no greaves). As for weaponry, they use unenchanted longswords.

These guards spend their time pacing around their section of the mine. However, as soon as either group of ogres in the mine is freed, the guards will immediately begin hunting down the escapees.

Each guard carries a Tarnished Ogre Cage Key and two copies of the Shiny Ogre Cage Key.

If one manages to talk to the guards, they will angrily shout:

"No repeat offenders! That's my motto!"

Bleak Mine Guard

There are three Bleak Mine Guards in the mine. Although they share the name of two of their colleagues, these are somewhat more powerful. They wear leveled heavy armor consisting of a cuirass, greaves, pair of boots, and pair of gauntlets. Their weapon of choice is a leveled battleaxe. None of the equipment is ever enchanted.

These three guards were meant to sleep between 6pm and midnight and spend the rest of their time pacing around their section of the mine. However, as there is but one bedroll available in the mine, only one will get some shut-eye while the others continue their patrolling. In the case that either group of ogres in the mine is freed, the guards will immediately begin searching for the escapees.

They each carry a copy of the Tarnished Ogre Cage Key.

If one manages to talk to them, the guards will say:

"You're living on borrowed time, thief!"

Bleak Mine Guard Captain

There is just one Bleak Mine Guard Captain in the mine. He wears leveled heavy armor consisting of a cuirass, greaves, helmet, pair of boots and pair of gauntlets. He carries a leveled claymore, which like his armor is unenchanted.

The captain sleeps between midnight and 6am and spends the rest of his time pacing around his section of the mine. Once either group of ogres in the mine is freed, he will immediately search for the escapees.

He carries a copy of the Tarnished Ogre Cage Key.

The captain will tell you:

"Thieves break in, but they don't break out... they break all over, when I'm finished with them." if one manages to talk to him.

Related Quests[edit]

Bugs[edit]

  • If you do not kill all of the guards during their related quest, they will follow you everywhere (even into Oblivion) until either of you are dead. You may not see them, even for many days, but they will still be after you. If you are arrested at any time after this quest, you will find the surviving Bleak Mine guards waiting for you when you exit the prison. They will not be hostile to you unless you draw a weapon, at which point they will attack you, possibly prompting a fight with any other nearby NPCs.
  • Due to an apparent oversight, the lower-level Bleak Mine Guards wear neither greaves nor pants.
