The body of Ormellius Goldwine, killed by Daedra

Ormellius Goldwine, an Imperial noble, is the late Count of Kvatch. Until the quest The Battle for Castle Kvatch's final stages, his destiny and whereabouts are unknown, but Kvatch Captain Savlian Matius is more than a bit concerned.

Quest-Related Events[edit]

Once you have succeeded in breaking the siege of Kvatch, approaching Savlian will have him lay out the next steps:

"We've done it! I can't believe it -- I didn't really think this would work. Maybe we do have a fighting chance. Oh, yes. We're not done. Not even close. This was only the first step. If this town is to be ours again, we'll need to get inside the castle."

After clearing the Castle courtyard, Savlian will exclaim:

"This area's clear. We've got to get inside and find the Count before it's too late. Move out!"

Once inside the Great Hall, Savlian will stop and say:

"All right, this is it! We'll hold this area. You head to the back of the castle, and find the Count. Don't come back here without him!"

If approached again, the impatient Captain will yell:

"You need to find the Count! Get moving!"

Once you locate the Count's Quarters, you will find the deceased Count lying in a pool of blood in the western corner of the room. He will still be wearing his upper-class attire, including an expensive black & burgundy outfit and gold trimmed shoes. He also wore a leveled piece of jewelry and carried a small amount of gold along with the Colovian Signet Ring you will have to pick up and hand over to Savlian Matius.

When you return to Savlian, he will impatiently say:

"Where is the Count? Why is he not with you?"
Lying face-down in a pool of blood!
"How dare you mock him, even in death! Had you not been instrumental in getting this far, I'd put you down where you stand. Where is the Count's ring? Do you have it?"
I'm sorry. He didn't make it.
"We... we were too late? If only we'd gotten here sooner! This is indeed a dark day for all of us left. But I thank you for risking your own life to help us. Did you find the Count's ring, by any chance?"

When you hand him the Colovian Signet Ring Savlian will wrap it up and reward you with his unique, enchanted Kvatch Cuirass:

Yes, here it is.
"At least this is safe. Thank you; I shall make sure it is protected, for the time when a new Count is crowned."

Notes[edit]

  • In an interview with Todd Howard, he referred to Ormellius as "the dead Duke in Castle Kvatch". Some of the internal topic names, namely MS49DukeDeadMean and MS49DukeDeadNice, also have this distinction, implying that the Count was at one point a Duke instead. He also states that the dead Count is the only remnant of a removed Nobility-focused questline.
  • At one point in development, Ormellius Goldwine was known as "Haderus Goldwine" instead. This name is still used when referring to the Count of Kvatch in the Pocket Guide to the Empire, 3rd Edition.
  • There's also an unused topic meant for Savlian Matius under this early name, where before Stage 100 of The Battle for Castle Kvatch quest, Matius would've said: "Count Goldwine is the embodiment of nobility. He's always ruled Kvatch with a fair hand, and listened to the needs of his people. He was a valiant warrior in his day, and inspired us all to be our best. I heard he personally led one of the first retaliations to the attack. But then, things got confused. Even the Legion troops stationed here couldn't hold the defenses. Count Goldwine retreated to the castle, determined to hold on to it at any cost. He's still in there now, I'm sure. That's why we've got to get in there and make sure he's safe. We owe him our allegiance, and besides, he'd do the same for any of us."
    • PC Only The Unofficial Oblivion Patch, version 3.2.7, addresses this issue. The line is made accesible again and the topic is renamed to "Ormellius Goldwine".
