Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
Just southeast of the Kynesgrove wayshrine, you'll overhear Kralald and another soldier talking about a missing captain. Talking to him reveals that the rest of his brigade went to pray at the nearby shrine to Kyne, but they still haven't returned.
- "The shrine to the goddess Kyne. We come here to pray and ask for her blessing before battle.
The rest of our brigade went to visit the shrine yesterday. They haven't returned yet and I'm worried about them." - Have you gone to look for them?
- "Well, no. Not after that traveling merchant came by and told us that terrible story. He said dark witches had killed the Keepers of the shrine. The place has been overrun!
I can match steel with any soldier, but how do you battle a witch's hex?" - I'll look for your companions.
The quest marker will direct you to the lodge directly to the south. As you get closer to the lake, you'll see several Muzzled Owl witches and Furykissed soldiers and thralls. Avoid or defeat them, and knock on the door of the Keeper's Home.
- "Go away, witch! You won't curse any more of my soldiers. If you don't leave, you'll taste my blade!"
- I'm not a witch. Kralald sent me to help.
- "Kralald? Really? How do I know you didn't bewitch him, just like the others?"
You have a choice here. You can persuade her to open the door, or you can prove you're not a witch by putting some soldeirs out of their misery and collecting their Amulets of Kyne. Either way, Alhana will unlock the door and invite you in. She will ask you to find the Keepers, or at least clues to where they could be hiding. She also mentions that the sickly Droi saw a non-hostile witch at the other end of the lake who might be willing to speak. Finally, she mentions a locked dresser in the Keeper's Home, but she has no key.
You'll need to kill the witches and furykissed soldiers to start looking for clues. As you go along, you'll find a Hymn to Kyne on one of the witches' bodies. You'll also be able to pick up the Dresser Key from someone, which you can use to unlock the dresser in the Keeper's house. It will make a journal appear on the top of the dresser. Finally, the witch Leifnar will be playing with a fireball on the opposite bank and will deign to speak with you.
Will all of the clues, return to Alhana and let her know there is a connection between the Keepers and the witches. She'll ask you to go to the locked house opposite the Keeper's home. It's locked, but you can either pick the door or sneak in through a back window. Once inside, you can search for clues.
- Suspicious Meat Pie: <A dense pie packed with vegetables, spices, mulled wine, and what you assume to be chunks of mammoth meat. It's topped with a golden-brown crust.>
- Suspicious Rug: <The thick, lush fibers of this exotic rug provide a welcome respite for your sore feet from the hard, stone floor.>
- Suspicious Skull: <This weathered old skull appears to be some sort of decorative element, or perhaps it is used in a ritual of some sort.>
- Suspicious Arrow: <The perfect grouping of arrows reveals that a battle of some sort took place here.>
You're interested in the journal next to the bed. Collect it to find out the head keeper fell in a crisis of faith and led the Keepers into Daedric magic.
Alhana climbs through the window while you're getting the remaining evidence, so hand it directly to her. She can't believe it.
- The witches are the Keepers.
- "What? No. That can't be right. Even though I suspected ….
No. No, there must be some mistake. To go against everything they believe in, everything they were taught. Why would the Keepers do such a thing?" - They've all lost children to the war. They blame Kyne.
- "The Keepers teach us it is an honor to die defending our homeland. That's what they preach.
Forsaking the teachings of Kyne dishonors us all!"
She rewards you for your efforts and asks you to save her brigade.
Notes[edit]
- You can eat the Suspicious Meat Pie to get a 30 minute health buff.

- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
