After you get the cage key, you will need to free him.

When you free him, he will either say:

Varryn Hloran: "I'm in your debt!"

Varryn Hloran: "You saved my life!"

Varryn Hloran: "I thought I was going to die here!"

Varryn Hloran: "You saved my life!"

If he's the last prisoner to be freed, he will tell you to rescue Captain Viveka:

Varryn Hloran: "Thanks. What about Viveka? Gullveig dragged her into that damned cave. Hurry!"

After you leave Lost Prospect Sanctum, you will find him outside with the rest of the survivors. If you speak to him before completing the quest and he'll tell you:

"Speak with Captain Viveka soon. She's impatient to leave."

After the quest:

"Ha! You settled their hash, didn't you? You'll always be welcome around our campfires."
