Mirili Ulven is a Dark Elf sorceress living in the settlement of Highcross. She is very focused on her research into the life forms of the Shivering Isles, its weather changes, and the cycles of the moon and stars, and will ask for your help in completing her work during the related quest.
True to her obsession, Mirili spends most of her day attending to her research. After waking up at 5am every day she will spend an hour relaxing at home before heading outside and starting her strict routine. First she will take a survey of the dewfall around Highcross, stopping at four locations between the stone arch at the village's entrance and the large mushroom tree root to the south. Next she will turn to tree growth measurements and will examine four specimens in vicinity, including one further up the hill towards the road and Frenzied Camp. She then turns her attention to collecting various insects, inspecting the hill to the north of the village all the way down to a large root. After looping round to make a final collection at the wooden pier down the hill to the northeast, she will head for a rock overlooking the nearby inlet to take wind and humidity measurements. In practice, she will constantly walking into it as she attempts to climb on top of it but fails. Note that if you speak to her at any point, she will bemoan your interruption and restart her routine from the start. At midnight she calls it day and returns home, before going to bed at 1am.
She wears a mage's robe and a pair of huntsman moccasins. She is equipped with an enchanted dagger and carries her key and a variable amount of gold. Mirili possesses a unique Fortify Health ability (+150 pts), which she loses once you complete her related quest. She also knows many spells from different schools of magic:
- Three Novice-level elemental damage Destruction spells: Spark, Snowball and Flare.
- Two Drain Fatigue Destruction spells: Major Enervation and Dire Enervation.
- Two random leveled Restoration and Alteration spells (both major).
- A powerful novice Paralyze Lesser Power, which is different from a regular Paralyze spell. Its base magicka cost is 35 and it paralyzes an enemy for 300 seconds.

Rumors[edit]
You may hear residents of the Isles comment on Mirili and her obsession:
- Halion: "If you ever find yourself in Highcross, to Mirili you should speak. It isn't treasure that she wants, it's knowledge that she seeks."
- Atrabhi (Dementia): "If you visit Highcross, don't speak with Mirili Ulven. She's doing fine with her project, all by herself."
- "I've heard there's someone in Highcross trying to catalogue every living thing in the Isles."
- "Mirili Ulven in Highcross thinks she can catalogue every creature in the Isles."
- "If you visit Highcross, speak with Mirili Ulven. She needs help with her project."
Which will elicit the following responses:
- Halion: "Smart she is, or so they say, eyes as sharp as keen as a blade."
- Atrabhi (Dementia): "She's definitely not trying to catalogue all the living things in the Shivering Isles."
- "That's Mirili Ulven. I know she's always looking for help."
- "Idiotic. She'll pay people to help her, though."
- "I heard she's trying to catalogue all the living things in the Shivering Isles, and she'll pay for help."
You will also hear the other two denizens of Highcross mention her when conversing with each other:
- Runs-In-Circles: "Do you have any shoes? No? Mirili offered me some shoes if I ran an errand for her research. I just ran instead. Say, do you have any shoes?"
- Bruscus Dannus: "No, no shoes. But how about a bath? You really should take a bath. You shouldn't run any errands for Mirili until you take a bath."
- Runs-In-Circles: "Ow! These holes in my shoes are killing me. Well, gotta run!"
- Bruscus Dannus: "I tried to tidy up for Mirili, but she just shooed me away. Then she had the nerve to ask for my help fetching things for her research."
- Runs-In-Circles: "Really? She wanted help? I could use some help. Actually I could use some food. Do you have any? I'm not picky. Anything at all."
- Bruscus Dannus: "No. You'd just spill on yourself anyway. Well, I have to go sweep my house. It's been over an hour. Goodbye."
If you ask either Bruscus or Runs-In-Circles about Mirili's Research, they will provide further information:
- Bruscus Dannus: "She is obsessed with collecting plants and animals. I'd steer clear of her. Now, do you mind moving? I need to sweep there."
- Runs-in-Circles: "She doesn't like it when I run through her plants. All she seems to care about is collecting plants and animals."
Quest-Related Events[edit]
Speaking to Mirili for the first time will have her lay out her obsession:
- "You're new here, so I'll try to be patient with you. I am compiling a taxonomy of every living thing in the Shivering Isles, the weather, changes in the moon and stars, and their interrelationships. I must not be interrupted! My work requires the highest degree of concentration. I hope I won't have to repeat myself."
- Sure, whatever.
- "I can see that the scope of my research is far beyond the limited understanding of a cretin such as yourself. Let me make it very simple for you. Don't speak to me. Ever. Now, thanks to your rude interruption, I have to start my day's work all over again."
- Fascinating. Tell me more.
- "I have no time for idle chatter with dilettantes. When I'm finished with the Encyclopedia Sheothia, you may study it to your heart's content."
After this, if you approach and greet her while she is undertaking her daily routine, she will reply based on what she is currently doing:
- "No, no, don't come any closer. I have to finish my morning survey of the dewfall at four precise locations."
- "Can't you see I was in the middle of my daily dewfall survey? Now I have to start all over again."
- "I don't have time to talk. I'm in the middle of some very sensitive measurements."
- "You've interrupted my tree growth measurements! You've ruined a whole day's work! Why can't you just leave me alone?"
- "Hold perfectly still! You're about to step on..."
- "I'm sure you didn't see it, but there was a very interesting beetle right there. Now it's gone, of course. How will I ever finish the Encylopedia Sheothia with these constant interruptions!?"
- "Not now. I need to concentrate. Can't you see I'm in the middle of something?"
- "Is it so hard to leave me alone to get some work done? My wind and humidity measurements must be VERY precise! Now it's all... ruined... I have to start everything over from the beginning!"
Should you approach her at other times, her response depends on her Disposition and whether you have completed the Main Quest:
- "I don't have time to talk. My work cannot wait."
- "The flame stalks are particularly bright this year." (Disposition >= 60)
- "I hardly need to tell you how important my work is, Lord Sheogorath."
Her greeting will likewise depend on her disposition, whether she is indoors and whether you have completed the main quest:
- "Why won't you just leave me alone? What do you want?" (Disposition < 40)
- "I would prefer that you didn't disturb me at home. My research is exhausting and I don't like to be bothered here."
- "For you, Lord Sheogorath, I'll make time. I'm sure you want to ask me all about my research."
Her last words when saying goodbye will likewise change if you have completed the main quest:
- "I'm glad that's over. You've kept me from my work long enough."
- "I'm glad that's over. I have work to do."
If you inquire about her research when her disposition is below 60 she will refuse to speak to you further:
- "My work is far too important to trust to you."
Raise sufficiently and she will provide you a task that sets off the Taxonomy of Obsession quest:
- Mirili's Research
- "You're offering to help me with my research? Well... I suppose I could find a use for you, despite your lack of training. Here's the list of things I need. Get me everything on it. Try to remember where you found it so you can tell me. It's important."
She will then hand you over a detailed list and if spoken to again she will say:
- "I hate these interruptions, but I suppose they are unavoidable."
- "I don't care if you are Lord Sheogorath, I hate being interrupted in my work. I assume this is important?"
- Mirili's Research
- "Do you have any new items from the list?"
- I have some interesting specimens.
- "Excellent. I'll just take them. These are perfect for my research! Thank you. Now go. Shoo!"
- "Liar! You have nothing new here! Begone until you get me something interesting." (if you have no new items)
- No, I haven't found any.
- "No luck, huh? Well, I have to get back to my research."
After finding and giving six of the required ingredients to Mirili, she will suggest a further task:
- Mirili's Research
- "Remind me to ask you about my bestiary. In the meantime, what have you found for me?"
- Mirili's Bestiary
- "My bestiary? Oh, yes. I want to start one. I'd like a Baliwog to begin with. You just get it close to me and I'll take care of subduing it. I might accidentally kill it. If that happens, just bring me another. Once I have it, I'll make sure it's worth your while. I have some spells I can sell you if you have no way to command the beasts yourself."
Depending upon skill level, she will offer the spells Mirili's Apprentice Command, Mirili's Journeyman Command, and Mirili's Expert Command, though she will mock you should your Illusion skill be below 25 or if you do not have sufficient gold:
- Buy a spell
- "Hmmm. Unfortunately your pathetic Illusion skill makes that idea useless."
- "Would you like one of these?"
- 500 gold for the Apprentice Command
- "This spell might do for a Baliwog or an Elytra Hatchling. Don't try it on anything tougher, though. When you bring them to me, I intend to wait until the spell wears off to capture them. I enjoy the challenge."
- "Not enough gold? I thought you looked like a pauper."
- 1000 gold for the Journeyman Command
- "I might as well have given it to you at that price, but it's worth it for my bestiary. When you bring them to me, I intend to wait until the spell wears off to capture them. I enjoy the challenge."
- "You don't have the gold. I hope you didn't think I was just going to give it to you?"
- 2000 gold for the Expert Command
- "A bargain at twice the price. When you bring them to me, I intend to wait until the spell wears off to capture them. I enjoy the challenge."
- "You came up short? Well, I'm not going to haggle with you."
- Not right now.
- "Suit yourself."
Once you have collected all the ingredients for her, she will be ecstatic:
- "I really must thank you. Chapters 23 and 48 of my taxonomy are now complete thanks to your effort. Please, take this as a token of my gratitude."
After you've managed to bring a Baliwog back to Highcross, as soon it turns hostile she will immediately proceed to attack it before paralysing it with her special spell. If you speak to her she suggests meeting in her house:
- "You've caught me a Baliwog! I can't wait to study it. Let's go inside and I'll pay you."
Speaking to her now will have her dismiss you:
- Mirili's Bestiary
- "Not now. My spell will wear off my new pet any minute now."
Once inside she will say:
- "Well? Do you want your pay or not?"
- "This is a wonderful start for my new bestiary. Well worth the price. Here you go."
If you speak to her again before having collected 12 ingredients, she will dismiss you:
- "These creatures will do for now. However, I'm sure I will eventually get bored with them. Ask me again later."
Once you have reached the required number, she will instead give you a new task:
- Mirili's Bestiary
- "Hmm? I suppose it is about time for me to add another creature. I have hopes for an Elytra. If you see one, could you bring it around for me?"
After delivering it safely, she will greet you outside and at home with:
- "An Elytra! They're tricky. I'll make sure to magically bind this one to me. Let's go to the house to get your reward."
- "I'm very excited to have an Elytra. Here's your pay."
Once you give her eighteen ingredients she will say:
- Mirili's Bestiary
- "I am getting weary of the same two beasts. All they do is scream when I experiment on them. Do you suppose you could get me a Gnarl?"
On delivery and inside her house she will greet you with:
- "A Gnarl! You've earned your reward. Follow me."
- "Here you go, bounty hunter. I can't wait to begin playing with my living tree."
With twenty-four ingredients collected you will unlock the final beast task, though her dialogue will depend on whether you are below level 9 or not:
- Mirili's Bestiary
- "I'm thinking a Scalon would complete the collection. Unfortunately, you are not powerful enough to handle them yet. Still, if you find one..."
- "Yes, yes, I know. They're all looking quite tiresome. A Scalon would sure spruce things up a bit, don't you think?"
When you provide her with the final creature she will be happy:
- "Hmm. This Scalon looks a bit mangy, but I suppose it will do. Your reward is in the house."
- "You have proven to be quite the hunter. Take your bounty. You've earned it. My collection is complete. Thankfully, you won't be interrupting me anymore."
Conversations[edit]
As long as you have not spoken to Mirili yet about her research, she may randomly engage in conversations with her fellow Highcross residents:
- Mirili Ulven: "Would you be willing to collect some Flame Stalk for me?"
- Bruscus Dannus: "Will you let me clean and organize your house?"
- Mirili Ulven: "No! I've warned you before to keep your brooms out of my house! Just go away. I'll find someone else to help me."
- Bruscus Dannus: "Can I tidy up for you? Your house is always such a mess."
- Mirili Ulven: "Don't you dare touch anything in my house! You'll ruin my research. Hmmm. Would you be willing to run an errand for me? I'll pay you."
- Bruscus Dannus: "I couldn't possibly leave my house. It gets so dirty so quickly. In fact, I have to go wipe down the walls again. It's been over an hour."
- Runs-In-Circles: "Can you spare some coins? I need a drink."
- Mirili Ulven: "Money for wine? I think not. However, I will pay you to collect Hunger tongues. What do you think?"
- Runs-In-Circles: "Work! Never. You're supposed to feel sorry for me and just give it to me. Oh! My legs are itching again. Time to run!"
- Mirili Ulven: "I need help collecting Swamp Tentacles. I'll even pay you."
- Runs-In-Circles: "But then who will run around the town? I need to keep retracing the circle or it will break."
- Mirili Ulven: "Never mind. I'll find someone else to help me with my research."
Stage-Dependent Dialogue[edit]
At different stages in the Main Quest, Mirili will share different rumors with you and other NPCs:
- They say there's a newcomer about. I wonder where he's from?
- I'll have to update my encyclopedia. I had an entire volume devoted to the Gatekeeper, and now he's dead.
- I suspect that the Resonator is affecting the migration patterns of baliwogs, but it's going to take years of study to be sure.
- Everyone's talking about Duke Thadon and his Chalice. How tedious. Don't people understand I have important work to finish?
- The palace intrigues of the House of Dementia are of no interest to me.
- People are all excited about the Great Torch being relit. Personally, I don't pay any attention to politics.
- I understand Dementia has a new leader. Not my area of interest, honestly.
- I understand Mania has a new leader. Not my area of interest, honestly.
- All my work on the Fringe... wasted. I'll have to begin my research all over again.
- I'd be very interested in taking a look at this new Gatekeeper. An entirely new form of life!
- The tedious to-ings and fro-ings of the armies of Sheogorath are of no interest to me.
- People act like Sheogorath's disappearance is of some grave significance. But the Shivering Isles are the same as ever, I assure you.
- With the Greymarch ended, I need to devote some serious study to the obelisks. They have proven more interesting than I had thought.
Notes[edit]
- When Mirili is plant collecting, it is very easy for her to meet her death as she sometimes strays too close to the Frenzied Camp where she will be attacked by Heretics.
Bugs[edit]
- As a Sorcerer by class, Mirili does not have Illusion as a major skill. As a result, she will only ever cast Apprentice-level Illusion spells from her leveled list, and even then only from player level 20.
The Unofficial Oblivion Patch, version 3.5.1, addresses this issue. The Illusion major spell is replaced with a Mysticism major spell.
Spells[edit]
These spells are only buyable after reaching the Bestiary stage of Taxonomy of Obsession and cannot be bought once the quest is completed. The spells must be bought through dialogue options, instead of the usual Spell Service button.

Spell Notes[edit]
- The cost for most spells matches the value you would calculate from the Spell Cost equation. In other words, if you were to create the same spell at the Spellmaking Altar it would have the same magicka cost as the built-in spell. However, there are a few notable exceptions, as noted in the tables. Spells that are a bad deal, i.e. more expensive than a custom spell, are in red; spells that are a good deal are in green. The magicka cost if you were to create a custom spell at the Spellmaking Altar is shown in parentheses.
- Cost for spells is dependent upon your skill in the school (as modified by Luck, see Magic Overview). The provided baseline values are the magicka cost when your skill level is 33. For other skill levels the magicka cost can be determined from:
Cost * (1.4 - 0.012 * Skill)
- Level indicates what skill level you must reach (or surpass) in order to use a spell. Skill Level 0-24 = Novice, 25-49 = Apprentice, 50-74 = Journeyman, 75-99 = Expert, 100 = Master
- The base cost in gold that you must pay to purchase a spell is always three times the current magicka cost of the spell, taking into account your character's skill level and Luck. (The actual cost you pay is further increased based on how well you haggle with the merchant). Therefore, if you have any Fortify Skill or Fortify Luck spells/potions handy, you can get significantly better deals when purchasing spells.
