Here is the intel I have on Whiterun.
Jarl Balgruuf has had a family amulet stolen, perhaps returning it could curry favor with him. Check Dragonsreach for clues regarding the amulet's whereabouts.
The Jarl is also a man who respects a strong defense. If you were to master such a skill, he'd surely respect you too.
