Finishing this quest and random DB assassin encounters[edit]

Does anyone know if completing this quest stops random DB assassin encounters? I've had 3 DB assassin attacks and have not started the DB quest line, does destroying the DB stop those random encounters? 24.156.216.144 11:40, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure, but I have destroyed them and have never been attacked before. 72.208.203.121 13:39, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Yes; completing this will end all random encounters with Dark Brotherhood assassins. (Joining the Dark Brotherhood will also end random DB assassin attacks.) 67.166.1.227 03:20, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

I dun goofed?[edit]

I might have accidentally killed one of the hostages (not so accidental) before my brain kicked in and realised I could probably kill Astrid. After just now hearing there's an option to eliminate the Brotherhood, it's too late for me to re-load an earlier save. Does anyone know if I can still wipe the Brotherhood? AzureSN 01:58, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, no. Once Astrid gives you her invitation to join the Brotherhood and you leave the shack, she and the other assassins become unkillable.64.135.48.170 15:48, 3 May 2013 (GMT)

Glitch?[edit]

I think this may be glitched on the PS3. When I killed Astrid and was prompted to tell a guard (and did so), the quest didn't update and the barter window wouldn't open when dealing with any merchants. The only thing that seemed to fix it at first was to reset the game, but once the quest updated to "Kill everyone in the Sanctuary", it happened again, and now resetting doesn't work. Going to see if finishing the quest does. — Unsigned comment by 24.128.44.135 (talk) at 17:06 on 12 December 2011

Edit: Just tried to get into the Sanctuary, and I cannot get in even with the password. — Unsigned comment by 24.128.44.135 (talk) at 17:10 on 12 December 2011

D&D reference?[edit]

Not having done this, and reading because I was going to, I noted the power word kill loot item (a scroll, perhaps?). That is a dungeons and dragon's spell, one of 3 or 4 similar spells in the 90s era game. Someone who is into the easter egg stuff can take a look... I am NOT going to post over on that discussion as it is way out of hand. — Unsigned comment by 66.18.49.84 (talk) at 11:04 on 23 January 2012

It was referring to the word wall inside the sanctuary which teaches the player the "kill" word of the Marked For Death Shout, it's not an actual item to loot. 75.87.249.240 00:21, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Calm Spell Bug[edit]

If you calm the Dark Brotherhood members during this section they'll treat you as if you've joined the Dark Brotherhood, and you'll get the basic introduction from each of them. — Unsigned comment by 125.206.236.45 (talk) at 11:48 on 24 January 2012

Easily kill Astrid[edit]

I jumped on top barrel next to the bed and shot an arrow at her. It must be a spot she can't get to, because she just ran to the corner behind the hostages and stayed there while I shot her 20 times with a bow and arrow — Unsigned comment by 69.126.211.152 (talk) at 20:29 on 3 February 2012

Can I betray the Dark Brotherhood?[edit]

I want to know that it is possible to do the "Destroy the Dark Brotherhood!" quest after I join the Dark Brotherhood (DB) and complete all the DB's quests? I mean some sort of betrayal. Anyone have tried? — Unsigned comment by 203.82.95.25 (talk) at 06:35 on 25 April 2012

No you cannot. Once you join they all become essential. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 07:13, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

revive the dark brotherhood[edit]

you CAN still play through the dark brotherhood quests even if you have completed "destroy the dark brotherhood"

do the following:

1. join the dark brotherhood faction:

"player.addtofaction 1bdb3 1"

now they wont be hostile to you anymore

2. resurrect all the dark brotherhood members you killed via console commands. for example:

"prid 1bde8

resurrect"

to resurrect astrid

ids for the other characters are: arnbjorn 1bde7, gabriella 1bdeb, nazir 1c3ad, veezara 1c3ae, festus krex 1d4bb, lis 3289a

note that babette was not in the sanctuary when you destroyed it, so you have to enable her and place her into the sanctuary. enter the sanctuary and issue the following commands

"prid 1d4bc

enable

resurrect

moveto player"

3. start your first dark brotherhood quest named "sanctuary":

you still need to advance the quest manually via

"setstage db02a 10"

congratulations, you have received your first contract and the shrouded armor

note that i havent figured out yet how to trigger the conversation they have when you join the dark brotherhood and enter the sanctuary for the first time. all the members are standing in a circle with babetta in the middle supposed to tell a story, yet they just stand there forever and do nothing. that wont keep you from communicating with them and doing quests however

it is not possible to re-initiate any earlier dark brotherhood quests ("innocence lost" and "with friends like these"), so this is the earliest point at which you can (re-)enter the dark brotherhood questline

Iron Battleaxe of Chills[edit]

The guide mentions looting an Iron Battleaxe of Chills off of one of the assassins. Just thought it may be worth noting that the weapons they use are leveled; I did the quest at level 34 and Arnbjorn had a Glass Battleaxe of Lethargy. The Argonian also had a glass weapon, though unenchanted. ~JustSomeGuy~ — Unsigned comment by 67.238.255.15 (talk) at 03:09 on 5 July 2013 (GMT)

By default, Arnbjorn definitely has an Iron Battleaxe of Chills in his inventory in game data. It's possible that something changes before/during/for this quest, but doubtful. What platform do you play on, and do you have any unofficial mods? — ABCface 16:01, 5 July 2013 (GMT)
I had an odd experience here (playing on PC, very few mods other than the one that adds bookstores). When I entered the Dark Brotherhood sanctuary to kill them all, I found Arnbjorn in the room he shares with Astrid, sitting at the table on the right with his back to the door. When I killed him, I obtained from the corpse BOTH the Iron Battleaxe of Chills and an Ebony Battleaxe of Storms (I was level 74 at the time). I went out, closing the door of the bedroom behind me, saved the game and restarted from that point a little later. This time, I tripped over Arnbjorn's body in his usual place near the forge -- it was no longer in the bedroom, and it was now possible to strip him of his armor. It might be relevant that I had had to force the quest to advance at two points with console commands -- the courier never delivered the "We know" message to me after I killed Grelod the Kind, and "Destroy the Dark Brotherhood" failed to trigger after I killed Astrid. Robinwitch1 (talk) 11:51, 13 November 2013 (GMT)
Re-ran the attack on the Sanctuary from a save, and again Arnbjorn was sitting in the same place (facing the door this time, though [on a third runthrough, he was asleep in bed]) and carrying two enchanted battleaxes, one ebony and one iron (cf. the picture uploaded as File:Arnbjorn inventory.jpg). However, this time, when I saved the game and reopened it, Arnbjorn's corpse did not move and his armor did not become removable. I also checked what Veezara was carrying and it turned out to be an ebony hand axe, showing that his weapon is leveled as well (Cf. picture uploaded as File:Veezara inventory.jpg). Dawnstar Sanctuary?[edit]

If you decide to kill Astrid and undertake the Destroy the Dark Brotherhood quest, is there any way to enter the Dawnstar Sactuary as well? King Mango (talk) 02:39, 2 November 2013 (GMT)

When I tried, the three answers I could give the Black Door to its question were all wrong, so it told me that I was unworthy. Pfft. Robinwitch1 (talk) 11:22, 18 November 2013 (GMT)
From what I can see in the CK, I agree with Robinwitch1's response. It looks like the only way to open that door is through The Cure for Madness, which of course you won't get if you destroy the DB. Out of curiosity, why do you want to get in there? Robin Hood  (talk) 23:37, 18 November 2013 (GMT)

Pay Nazir[edit]

During my rampant through the Dark Brotherhood, at some time, the quest Honor Thy Family popped up. AFAIR I cast a Calm spell during this but I don't know if this might have triggered the quest by killing a non-hostile member. --Romulus (talk) 11:16, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
