Afanna Eddici, an Imperial citizen, is a highborn member of Count Desilus Carvain's court at Castle Bruma. During Ugly Love, you will discover that she is madly in love with Simund Gautierre, who does not share her feelings, and can take advantage of this to further your investigations.
She sleeps from 10pm to 7am in the Guest Wing of the castle, before enjoying a two-hour breakfast in the Great Hall. Between 9am and 3pm she will be found pacing around her quarters, gossiping to any of the other inhabitants. At that point she will head to the Jerall View Inn to eat and further socialise with the citizens of Bruma until 6pm. She will then return to the castle to join in the Count's dinner and spend the rest of the evening relaxing in her quarters. The only exception to this schedule is during Service Rewarded, when she will be waiting in the throne room alongside her fellow nobles to acclaim you Friend to Bruma.
Afanna's attire reflect her status: Colovian fine clothes, fine boots and a gold necklace. She also carries an iron dagger and a random assortment of jewelry, gems, gold, lockpicks, food and drink.

Dialogue[edit]
When first meeting her, she will haughtily declare:
- "Hello. I am Afanna Eddici. I'm part of the Bruma court. Rather high-ranking in it, too. Anyway, is there anything you needed?"
- What do you do here in Castle Bruma?
- "Do? Oh, well, I suppose I don't really do anything in particular, I mean, I help out the Count when needed of course. My father owned land outside of Bruma, and after some lucrative business with the Carvains, became well respected. I inherited what he owned when he passed and, well, here I am! But I do love conversations like this. Feel free to come back and chat about it again sometime!"
Quest-Related Events[edit]
While you are investigating the disappearance of Dumrag gro-Morrg's wife Atul, you can ask Rignar the steward if he knows of any mercenaries being hired. After consulting his records, he'll point you in Afanna's direction:
- "Well, I've checked the records. There was one account of Afanna Eddici hiring some mercenaries for a job similar to your description last year. She spends a lot of time around the castle, you can go speak to her if you wish.
Afanna herself initially seems quite oblivious, though you'll quickly get the sense there's more to her when it comes to Simund:
- Do you know of any nobles that hired mercenaries recently?
- "Hmm. Let me think. There was one raid Simund organized, last I remember. Never mentioned it to me. Always been a quiet fellow. But I saw it in his journal."
- Do you remember when this raid was?
- "Umm... no, truth told. Though I imagine you could just check Simund's journal if you wanted to do that. I obviously couldn't endorse such behavior, though. Goes without saying, I suppose."
- Do you not remember the raid Sinja Strong-Mind pushed for?
- "Oh! Yes, I do. Operation Strongarm, they called it at the time. Sun's Dawn, I think?"
- You were reading his journal?
- "Well, yes. He's one of those mysterious men, you know? Just has an aura about him. Piques a lady's interest. You can't blame me for peeking in his journal, I hope. We all have our vices."
- Where would I find Simund's journal?
- "In his quarters, of course. Though you may need a key to get inside..."
At this point, one option is trying to bribe her:
- And you may want 500 septims, for 'expenses', and I might want his journal.
- "Pfft! You try to sweet-talk me, tempting me with coin you don't even have! Begone, wastrel!" (not enough gold)
- "I may. But I'm a noble. I'm hardly a beggar. So why should I accept this... 'expense' money?"
If you succeed, you will now have three choices:
Answer | Success | Fail |
---|---|---|
Because I'm just too charming to say no to. (Persuade) | "I... oh, very well. I'll take the coin, and I'll just go get the journal." | "I'm afraid you may have a slightly inflated opinion of yourself. Apologies." |
Because I'll crush you underfoot if you don't. (Intimidate) | "No! Don't lift a finger, I'll take it, I'll take it! Just let me go get the journal. Once I've gotten it, I'll just wait around - inconspicuously, you understand - in the great hall." | "You're bluffing. You'd never try that here, in Castle Bruma." |
I could always sweeten the deal... say, 1000 septims? | "I... oh, very well. I'll take the coin, and I'll just go get the journal." | "Pfft! You try to sweet-talk me, tempting me with coin you don't even have! Begone, wastrel!" |
Either way, if you succeed she will conclude with:
- "Once I've gotten it, I'll just wait around - inconspicuously, you understand - in the great hall. A pleasure."
Head to the great hall and after a while Afanna will appear, journal in hand:
- "Ah, you're here. Good. I procured the journal just as we agreed. Now, I need to get going before someone gets suspicious. I've had too many little jaunts into Simund's office. I think someone told the guards to keep an eye out for me having further adventures. Best of luck in your... whatever it is you're doing."
Alternatively, you will be able to get the key if you agree to do her a favor: placing a love letter to Simund in his quarters on behalf of the smitten Afanna:
- Something makes me think you have that key.
- "Well, maybe I do. Gah. I'm a terrible liar. Okay, I have one. But I obviously couldn't give it to you, now, could I? Unless... you could always do me a favor..."
- What kind of a favor?
- "Here's what we'll do. I'll give you the key to Simund's quarters and you can do whatever you wish. But in return, you have to leave this note in his drawer. Err, no need to read it. It's... sentimental."
- I'll do it. Now hand over the key.
- "Oh, fantastic! Ahem. Here you go. I eagerly await your return."
- No way I'm doing that.
- "Then I suppose you won't be getting the key. Unless, of course, you were to reconsider..."
Should you change your mind, she will be delighted:
- I've reconsidered. Give me the key, and I'll plant your letter.
- "Oh, fantastic! Ahem. Here you go. I eagerly await your return."
Once you return, she will hardly be able to contain her excitement:
- "Did you do it? Did you plant the note in Gautierre's drawer? Oh, I'm aflutter with excitement!"
- No, I haven't.
- "What? You betrayed my trust! Out of my sight!"
- Yes, I have.
- "Excellent! Here, take a bit of extra coin. My treat. I can't wait until Simund reads it."
- It looks to me like Gautierre is the one who hired the mercenaries.
- "Errm, and...?"
- Long story. Nevermind.
- "No, no. If this is gossip, I'm dying to know!"
- Err, I'm just saying that he... is proactive about bandits. (Lie)
- "Oh, well, of course he is!"
- It seems to me like he's responsible for an ambush and kidnapping.
- "No! That's... impossible! My dear Simund would never stoop so low!"
In the last case, she will refuse to pay you any reward.
If you eventually choose to indicate her as being responsible for Atul's kidnapping, Dumrag will howl:
- It was Afanna Eddici.
- "That's one of the noblewomen in the castle, isn't it? That woman's got it coming to her. Follow me, and stay close."
Once he arrives at the throne room, he will cut her down before being himself slain by the Count's guards:
- Dumrag: "It's time! I want to see the scum that kidnapped my wife! Afanna, come here and face me! Your games are up!"
- Afanna: "What's going on here?"
- Dumrag: "Ah, yes, try to slither out of it like the snake you are. Try all you like, retribution comes swiftly."
