Simund Gautierre, a Breton citizen, is a highborn member of Count Desilus Carvain's court at Castle Bruma who also owns a country manor northeast of the city. He plays an important role in the Ugly Love quest, when you are tasked by mercenary Dumrag gro-Morrg to find his missing wife Atul.
Simund sleeps from 10pm to 7am in the Guest Wing of the castle, before enjoying a two-hour breakfast in the Great Hall. Between 9am and midday he will be found loitering around the Great Hall and will then head to his private quarters to read his papers for two hours. From 2pm to 6pm he will be found relaxing in the Guest Wing, before heading back to the Great Hall for a two-hour dinner. He will spend the rest of the day pacing around the Guest Wing. The only exception to this schedule is during Service Rewarded, when he will be waiting in the throne room alongside his fellow nobles to acclaim you Friend to Bruma.
Simund is richly dressed, in Colovian fine clothes and boots, and carries a silver greatsword, the key to his private quarters and a random assortment of jewelry, gems, gold, lockpicks, food and drink.

Dialogue[edit]
Unless you are questioning him during the related quest, he will contemptuously dismiss you with
- "I have a lot to do and not enough time do it while talking to ignorant sods like you."
- "I'm a busy man, so don't waste my time."
Quest-Related Events[edit]
During the related quest, you will will be able to question him about any recent mercenary operations against local bandits:
- Do you know of any nobles that hired mercenaries recently?
- "Erm, yes, there was... Strong-Mind's operation. That's... about all I can remember, though."
After you've spoken to Sinja, who will mention a second operation, he will be rather shifty:
- But Sinja mentioned another raid, on a Middas. Her raid wasn't the only one.
- "Hmm. Err, nothing that I recall. Apologies."
When you check in with Rignar the steward, he will provide some more evidence against Simund:
- "Out of memory, there was another who hired some mercenaries for a bandit raid last year too. It was... Simund Gautierre. Yeah, that's the one. Not too sure on the details. I'm going off of memory here, since his mission wasn't recorded in the books. Huh. Strange, that. We usually keep thorough records..."
When confronted, Simund will again deny everything:
- What about a certain raid on a Middas? Orc mercenaries? Do they ring a bell?
- "I- wha- no. Of course not. That's preposterous."
At this point, if you speak to Afanna Eddici, she will provide some further information:
- Do you know of any nobles that hired mercenaries recently?
- "Hmm. Let me think. There was one raid Simund organized, last I remember. Never mentioned it to me. Always been a quiet fellow. But I saw it in his journal."
- You were reading his journal?
- "Well, yes. He's one of those mysterious men, you know? Just has an aura about him. Piques a lady's interest. You can't blame me for peeking in his journal, I hope. We all have our vices."
She will then offer to hand over the key to his room, if you promise to slip a love letter in his drawer. After stealing his journal, you will discover that he did in fact became infatuated with the Orc maid Atul after hiring her husband for a mercenary job. Accusing Simund in front of Afanna will however see her gasp:
- It seems to me like he's responsible for an ambush and kidnapping.
- "No! That's... impossible! My dear Simund would never stoop so low!"
Sharing your suspicions with Dumrag will enrage him:
- It was Simund Gautierre.
- "Gautierre? The Breton? Then I'll rip his... ...wait, a Breton? Really? A Breton? Weak-willed, soft-spoken magic-practicing ponces? How could a Breton overcome an Orc? Even with bandits on his side? I remember overhearing talk in the castle that Simund had a luxury manor up in the east of the Jeralls somewhere. Go search this guy's home, see if it actually was him. Find something, anything, that conclusively links him to the crime, and bring it to me. If it is the damned Breton, that's when we act."
Further inspection of his manor will turn up a letter showing he conspired with a bandit ringleader to kidnap her. Report back to Dumrag and he'll say:
- I found this letter at Simund Gautierre's house.
- "Let me see that! This... that bastard... yes! He did it, I can tell, plain as day! He tries to speak in riddles but it seems he's not all that good at subtlety... we've found the bastard! And it seems... it implies he got her alive. Perhaps she's still alive? Come, my friend. It's time we got to the bottom of this, once and for all. We're going to Gautierre's house. Now. I'll follow your lead. It's time for retribution."
- Why Gautierre's house? He wasn't there when I went...
- "Well, he wasn't at the castle when I went to do a little 'investigation' while you were away, so he must be somewhere. I bet he's at the house. Just probably not in plain sight. Slimy Breton bastard."
While at the manor in Dumrag's company, he will make various scathing remarks about Simund:
- "So this is it, huh? Pfft. Damned Breton and his creature comforts. Let's head inside. It's time to end this."
- "Would you look at this... silverware... Materialistic Breton bastard. Doesn't surprise me."
- "That's what he thinks of her, of course it is. Just another one of his possessions. Another trophy in his cabinet. That slimy-"
- "Wait, would you look at this. There's a trapdoor under here, looks like these barrels got pushed over it. Ha ha ha, that little eel... tried to hide himself by hiding the way in, eh?"
Once you enter the basement, you will witness a surprisingly tender scene between Simund and Atul:
- Simund: "Today went better than expected, I suppose. But some nosy type came asking around, about mercenaries and bandits and payments. I told you the brute was back in town, and now it seems he's got a lackey who's on our scent. I even felt the need to barricade us in here for protection. This constant running and hiding is..."
- Atul: "I know. This is... I don't know. This is still so strange, it's hard wrapping my head around it sometimes."
- Simund: "Yes, I know what you mean, dear. But sometimes things just happen and you're foolish to fight back. It's unfortunate that we have to keep our relationship a secret as we do, but what choice do we have?"
- Atul: "Quiet now, Simund. Just relax."
Dumrag will now butt in and engage in a furious argument with the couple:
- Dumrag: "You sneaky, slimy, slithering bastard. Here, with my wife. My... wife. You deviant, backstabbing..."
- Simund: "She's mine, Dumrag! She loves me!"
- Dumrag: "Your lies can't save you now, you ignorant son of a-"
- Atul: "It's true, Dumrag. I... love him."
- Dumrag: "Atul, you... faithless wretch! How dare you? How dare you forsake me so brazenly for this corrupt, spineless..."
- Simund: "Enough of this. Atul loves me. She no longer loves you. You must come to terms with that, Orc. Now, leave our home and never bother me, or her, ever again."
At this point you will have to advise Dumrag to either kill or spare Simund. If you choose the first option, Dumrag growls:
- Kill Gautierre. He deserves it.
- "You're right. That devious..."
- Do as you will. This isn't my decision to make.
- "They're both guilty. That slimy Breton, my faithless, lying wife. I take no pleasure in this, but I will end it all the same."
In the first case, he will move towards Simund, ignoring Atul's pleas:
- "No! Get away from Simund, you blood-crazed fool!"
In the latter, Simund will cry out before Dumrag strikes them both down:
- "You, there! Stranger! Help us! This crazed brute is going to kill us! Help!"
If Simund survives, he will return to Bruma, never bothering to visit his lover.
